Very sad to hear about the HBC store in Winnipeg. I'm hoping they can find a new vocation for the building that preserves as much of its history as possible, inside and out.

Something like what was done with Victoria's original HBC could be achieved.

Closing down under-performing stores seems like the logical thing to do. Cut the foot to save the leg, but I imagine there is some reason why large chains never do it. My guess would be to try and keep stocks relatively stable until the bitter end; if HBC were to announce the closure of half their stores tomorrow, the stock would plummet to unsustainable levels. Another way they could do it is to try and quietly close under-performing stores one by one over a period of time, though that doesn't seem to have ever been attempted with other department store chains as far as I know (Sears closed a few in the early 2010s, but that was part of a CF buy back).

At Ottawa's Rideau HBC, they did a minimal effort to update the store. Some interior renovations, sort of a cheap version of Queen and Granville, cleaned-up the Rideau façade of years of soot that came from diesel buses, added a Saks Off Fifth... yeah, that's it. The street level still has the cheap glass and corrugated metal from 30+ years ago, the ByWard Market face still has the orange panels hiding the original brick and windows, the Freiman Mall addition built in the 90s continues bears the horrible tinted glass and dingy brown brick.

HBC Rideau Street:

HBC's ByWard Market face:

And for context, Rideau Street renewal work so far, which will include far wider sidewalks (widest in Ottawa), bike lanes, some trees.

How long before all HBC's go under? I'd like to see HBC relaunched as a brand, mostly housewares/blankets/accessories globally.

This WPG location could be transformed into housing or ideally a UWPG campus building.

I had no idea that Rideau street was going through such redo. It's great and dearly needed in my opinion.

The University of Winnipeg is a logical option because of the proximity to their campus. They were approached and kicked the tires, but ultimately passed due to the immense costs. (U of W recently did some fairly ambitious building projects over the last 10-15 years, so I don't think there was much appetite for taking on more)

MOSCHINO GOES TO CANADA

The King of collaboration is at it again. Jeremy Scott’s latest project is a collab with Moschino and Hudson Bay’s Company. The Canadian retailer is celebrating 350 years (!!!!) in business this year and hooked up with the Italian luxury brand to create a collection inspired by Hudson’s Bay signature stripes, classic HBC red, green, yellow and indigo.

The collection dropped yesterday and is anchored by the premium wool Moto Jacket. The eleven-piece collection features street-style staples like loungewear, a keyring, belt, t-shirt, dress, waist bag and Moschino’s Moto Jacket Shoulder Bag enveloped in HBC Stripes.

A shred of random good news for the Bay. It's nice to think of it as a Canadian icon of sorts when we are relatively short of those from a consumer goods perspective. I don't think they are in danger of completely going under but will likely be operating much leaner far moreso than even some of the projections here.

Moschino is an odd pairing though and this certainly doesn't have the ingredients of a memorable collection. Something really creative, newsworthy and Canadian would be something like what Canada Goose did with the Inuit in their Atigi collection:

Made in China no doubt.

Not only overpriced, but ugly as sin.

Ugly but iconic. Why wrap yourself in a blanket when you can wear it instead???

HBC is always trying to make their stripes a trendy thing like the Burberry check, but it never works.

I mean, they're iconic, no doubt about that. But I have a hard time imagining people shelling out huge bucks for it unless they ride another brand's coattails, like Moschino in this case.

How about an HBC-branded pickup truck? The stripes would look good wrapped around a Rivian R1T.

Wow. I would not expect to hear something like that about HBC... that seems remarkably small-time for such a storied company. They must be in rough shape.

Could be part of a broader dispute with the landlord.

In the UK, Burberry's 'tartan' is a symbol of 'chav' culture. It's worn by uneducated working class hooligans. It's a little odd to me how North Americans venerate it. Burberry is a luxury brand but that Burberry pattern couldn't get any tackier. HBC is a lower end brand but the stripes are a ton classier and have deep historical significance. 'Point blankets' were used during the fur trade: the more stripes the warmer. I wouldn't be caught dead in that Burberry 'tartan'. HBC cheapens the brand by putting those stripes on way too many things. That said, the HBC point blanket has a ton more cache and not just in Canada.

Canadians are famously self deprecating though. The view is that if it's from here it's crap and to be discarded. If it's from another country it must be superior and the coolest thing ever.

$550 HBC Point Blankets
