The upgrades to the NEWPCC is provincially mandated by legislation; investing in "upgraded" transit solutions is not. In the current climate of extremely limited municipal resources, its clear which project takes precedent.
Water treatment centre is infrastructure – take money from the absurd new road and infrastructure budget. Cap sprawl and make an infill strategy. Transit improvements and investments also benefit the environment, so if this is what it's about – cancel road projects that increase traffic causing more emissions.

Lowering the police budget would also be a good start.

If your streetlights are out you should report it to MB Hydro. There is no initiative to turn off lights at night.

Can someone help me decipher this, it's at the former Robin's Donuts on St. Mary's (Norwood) right behind my house. Can't figure out what it's saying is happening, and can't find anything about it on the city website.

I don't understand why we need a pilot project to tell us this signage is awful. Just got back from Vancouver where every development/variance has a massive sign with images and plain language, and direct links to more details on the city website.

I agree, wish it were easier to find stuff on the Winnipeg site in regards to these. It sounds like this particular sign is in regards to not following a bylaw pertaining to fence requirements and the city is recommending that it’s ok as long as they follow their submitted plans.

Looks to me like the property owner wants to redevelop the site and the light screening privacy fence will be removed. As part of the redevelopment the site plans including new fencing have be submitted to the city for approval.

It is too bad that they can't say that in plain English.

Calling the city planner would probably get you the 5 page site plans referenced on the notice so you can see what is being proposed in case you want to appeal the administrate ruling.

In my travels today, I saw some type of crawler driving piles into the empty lot beside the Boyd Medical building on Portage.

How is it possible that no one on here has managed to find permits going through for that?

Are positive it was driving piles?

I walk by every day, and so far the only purpose of that crane is to hold a bin outside the upper windows to collect debris from the interior demo.

I was driving by, so I can't confirm that it was for construction work.

It seems odd to me that they would pay for a crane to hold a bin for storing trash.

Isn't the old plastic covered shoot from window to dumpster a cheaper way to do this?

Unless somebody knows better than me, is this not the same group that illegally put up an electronic billboard only to be told to tear it down a year or two later by the city?

In any case..

I am a fan of redeveloping the empty lot. So I applaud whatever might show up there.

It just occurs to me that this could be a project that is completely flying under the radar.

On a different note..

Since returning from the States, is that ever a beautiful parking lot that they are building by 201 Portage.

You would think there are more efficient options available - but trust me, they are definitely using the crane to lift, hold and dump debris in a large bin.

I have no idea what is going on with this development, but I am not holding out much hope for anything great.

I just hope that they don't ruin the building before it ends up in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing.

That two story building to the west might mean a trash bin on the ground is not possible.

Yeah, the pessimist in me thinks that the only reason that crane is there is to signal to the powers that be that "hey look, real work is happening here". Partially as a justification for the removal of that 2-storey building.

Next up will be the classic Winnipeg surface parking lot bait and switch.

I mean there were rumours that it was going to be a parkade... I just don't understand how that could be happening with no information becoming public. And while the city never ceases to amaze me in their mistakes, I really do think/hope they're above just letting a small parkade being built right on Portage.

If they are renting the crane, they will only get billed for the hours it is operating. If the crane owner has nowhere else to use it, they don't usually mind storing it on a site in the meantime. It doesn't cost the renter and it saves the owner effort in moving it.

I would like to know who's name is on the side of it.

They actually already tried the stealth surface parking lot and were quickly shut down.
