For what it's worth, the mainline is at a design speed of 110 kph, the highest design speed for this classification of road. All ring road legs are to have a posted speed 10 kph below the design speed. Only rural arterials and freeways can now reach design speeds of 120 and 130 and therefore posted speeds of 110 - Henday and Stoney will require exceptions to the design guide for posted speeds of 110.

IMO, leave it all until the west is done and the NE is widened to 6 lanes, then make it all 110.

What's inaccurate here? I can't tell just looking at it; maybe I can have a go at fixing it.

Neato, I wasn't expecting this. 201 shields, eh?

So, if I'm trying to keep track of everything signed as 201 (ignoring what is & isn't full freeway yet; it will be in the future...), there's...
  • The bits we've had for years, from Exit 36 at TCH 1 in the NW, clockwise past KM0 to Exit 5 at Macleod.
  • A short extension of this to Exit 8 at McKevitt.
  • Exit 13 (Fish Creek) to Exit 17 (Anderson). There's YouTube footage of this; IIRC someone posted it upthread.
  • Exit 22 (Glenmore/Sarcee) to 69, which may or may not yet be signed as Exit 26?
  • Does this all sound about right?
And in the future, there's...
  • 2020-10-01: Exits 17-22
  • 2021-10-01: Exits 8-13
  • 2024: North of Hwy 8 to Exit 36
  • Along Hwy 8 from Exit 22, I'd expect at that same time or maybe sooner if it gets upgraded along the way.

This would be trickier to make sure I'm getting it right. While things are planned to extend farther west in the future, if I compare to Bing Aerial (often used as a basis for OSM edits) it looks like the WB mainline might tie into the existing/EB mainline about here. Is that about right?

Westbound mainline under the McKevitt bridge is not yet open, nor is that onramp from McKevitt to WB 22X. Westbound currently merges into the eastbound side sooner than that. The in other inaccurate thing is that it still shows the old EB-NB loop as active, but it hasn't existed for 6 months or more.

Yes that sounds correct. October 1 is the target opening day this year and next, not October 21. Guessing that's a typo.

Till the west leg is done the WB mainline is merging into eastbound somewhere west of 85 Street.

Got it; this sounds simple enough.
It sounds, then, like this WB crossover is fictitious?

Same place as the EB crossover before Macleod? Or just west of 6 St (by roughly the same distance)? Somewhere else?

Not sure what you mean here. Are you talking about Hwy 8 -> Sarcee?

Oops, indeed it was. Got hung up on typing 2021. Fixed my previous post, thanks!

Sounds compatible with what I linked above. I'll proceed under that assumption...

--

EB 6 St offramp:
OSM shows this as Exit 6. Page 5 of this PDF shows it as Exit 7. (It's several years old though, and some of the info in it appears to have changed.) Which is correct?

69 St interchange:
The westward diversion and at-grade intersection that OSM shows, I assume was just temporary for construction and is gone now, with the direct alignment & bridge (still shown as proposed/under construction) now open.

Hwy 8:
I imagine that when everything is done, Hwy 8 could end at 201, and is a bit of a moving target. How far east is Hwy 8 signed right now?

What's maybe overengineered is the additional capacity for another freeway that we won't ever build. When he's saying "overengineered" he's in fact talking shit, as the road is built to most minimum specs in the highway design guide for the required design speeds, and we're just used to shitty roads like Crowchild and Deerfoot that are "underengineered".

The crossovers and stuff down there are changing literally everyday. It might not even be the same as the last time I was there. I'd just wait and see till the crossovers are in that will be carried through winter and go with that if we're talking about map changes.

No. Old EB-NB loop at Macleod/22X. Looks correctly deleted now.

I've paid zero attention to the exit numbers as they're inconsequential. A lot of exit number signs aren't up yet either, the last time I've been through most of it.

Maybe. There was supposed to be a big change there on Sunday. They've been way off on their advertised dates for traffic changes.

When everything is done then yeah Highway 8 will either end as Stoney turns north or carry on east as an unsigned concurrency. It's still an active construction zone so whatever 8 shields are still up could still come down. What KGL is doing with signage in the interim might have no bearing on what AT actually intends, and AT doesn't like signing concurrencies.

Can we maybe link to the people doing the work to compile these updates instead of just reposting them without credit?

It was stated ages ago where this info is coming from--we all it's coming from a weekly newsletter. We repost some content here to make it easier to discuss. The same thing happens on every forum on this site.

Why are you jumping down people's throats on nearly every post made? Any little "mistake" made leads to a chastising by you. No one here is claiming to be an expert on this road or any other road in Calgary. If you work on this project and have knowledge not readily available to the public then say so. Also, no one is trying to take credit for any of these updates. If someone posts a photo or a video of the project that they took they'll say so.

My interest in discussing this project here has just disappeared. I'll look for a less adversarial site.

James McKevitt/Stoney Trail Tragedy

When I saw the strange traffic arrangement for vehicles travelling SB on James McKevitt and joining WB Stoney Trail (ie cross over the bridge, travel west on Spruce Meadows Green, turn north, cross the EB Stoney trail then join the WB Stoney Trail FAST LANE) I thought this is an accident waiting to happen. http://www.swcrrproject.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Br-14-16-opening.pdf.

Then three deaths yesterday! "According to police, the driver of the compact car was attempting to merge from James McKevitt Rd. into the westbound lanes of Stoney Trail when it crossed in front of the path of a westbound Dodge D300 truck and was struck on the driver's side" https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/third-victim-...in-ring-road-construction-area-1.5115105.

Looking at the video and damage I would sispect the Dodge truck was travelling EB.

Google confirms my suspicions here.
Same for the WB offramp to McKevitt, and the 6th -> McKevitt connector.

"Many people have told CTV construction in the area has resulted in confusing and frequently changing signage and traffic patterns." The photo/footage in this article appears to be shot facing west, west of the McKevitt overpass, making the claim that "the driver ... was attempting to merge from James McKevitt Rd" a bit suspect. I'm guessing they may have actually entered at Tournament? I can't make out whether or not, the roadway was divided there, but in either case...

This does sound like a good plan. The map's not grossly out of whack there, and won't lead anyone astray in terms of wayfinding. No need to make inconsequential edits now that'll just be undone in a couple months.

I like to have `em for the TravelMapping project.
I'll assume that whoever added Exit 6 to OSM knew what they were doing, unless someone else weighs in to refute that.

Back at CTV, an earlier article on the same crash has a nice image of an Exit 9 sign at the WB 22X/201 split. Beats me why the sign is there & uncovered & not marked as closed if the road isn't open for another year (unless... is that assembly facing the WB carriageway that's not open yet?), but anyway...
Could it be said then that 201 "exists" as far west as the 22X split?
Are there any 201 shields EB, W of McKevitt?

Looks like I was wrong; that big change would be this one, which will be in place until October 1st.
(LOL, I cannot find where I found that link again (it's not here) and it's driving me insane...)
So it looks like the bridge is not 100% in service yet, and the at-grade diversion is still in use...

Unlike the 22X corridor, the Hwy 8 corridor may be more worthy of a map update...
So, it looks like the WB median crossover just W of Tsuut'ina Pkwy is gonzo, in favor of the merge W of 85 St.

How about the following movements; are these open?
  • SB 69 St right turn ramp to WB Stoney
  • Tsuut'ina Pkwy -> WB Glenmore
  • EB Glenmore -> Tsuut'ina Pkwy
  • Tsuut'ina Pkwy (west of Sarcee) -> EB Glenmore
  • WB Glenmore -> Tsuut'ina Pkwy
  • SB Sarcee -> Tsuut'ina Pkwy

(Youtube) FWIW, signage at 11:56 says Glenmore Tr WEST TO 8, so someone somewhere might consider it to not be part of 8 proper.

Ah, that explains why the photo & footage in the article seemed to be west of the overpass. Just referring to the driver merging "from James McKevitt Rd" was pretty confusing to me, not being from the area.
I assume the entrance is controlled by a stop sign, not signals?

(Weird -- the article now contains a different video from what I originally saw last night...)

The signage for the the 22X split checks out, and the houses look like Bridlewood; we're facing west. Meaning the pickup is pointed west, as the article says.
...And the car is pointed east. How did that happen if the car turned left, as the article says? How would turning left be consistent with being struck on the driver's side?
I don't get it.

My head is spinning! Thankfully, I don’t normally drive in that part of the city, and don’t drive through major construction zones if I can possibly help it. I did get a little lost the other day when I had to drive through a major construction zone for the first time, missing a new exit ramp that I needed to take that’s not yet on google maps.

I haven't driven here for a few days but this morning's Global news showed footage where it is clear that a new ramp is now open from SB James McKevitt to WB Stoney. It all makes sense now. VERY tragic! The video seems to imply she may have taken the wrong exit ramp, and instead of merging with WB traffic tried to cross and turn left? https://globalnews.ca/news/7349949/calgary-fatal-crash-spruce-meadows-trail/

If I remember, I will make note of exit numbers the next time I'm down and report back.

Signage is quickly going up. Shields I can't specifically remember, but the big overhead signage is almost all up down there and identifies the whole stretch as 201 and not 22X, so it's safe to say 201 exists to the 22X split at this point. If shields aren't there now, they will be eventually. There's some nice new ones on eastbound mainline just after 69 St.

That sign doesn't look permanent though so I'm not sure. Up until a little while ago there were still Glenmore signs up for the part of what's now Stoney between 69 St and Sarcee.
