Where I live, I've witnessed incredibly poor parenting. I fully appreciate kids playing hockey, basketball, or whatever in the street of a cul-de-sac. However, when parents watch as cars try to navigate around their kids on the road, oblivious to their parental obligations to teach kids about street safety and vehicle awareness I think it's only a matter of time before I see one listed as the victim an news article.

I enjoy going to this market, but how they are pitching it makes me want to go less and less. That image is exactly the opposite of what I want to go see and experience. Blah.

maybe you wouldn't feel that way from where you live if it was pouring rain.

Though poorly expressed imo, I see a point, if your main selling feature is free parking and not what's actually in the market, you aren't long for this world.
Tell me why I should even bother driving there because I know why I walk/bike/drive to Stathcona and the 104st ones, and when we do drive it's certainly not because we can get some free parking.

i think you're missing the point...

the product being sold is not free parking.

the product being sold is the new - albeit not the first new - location for edmonton's downtown farmer's market:

From day one, it’s been vendors and customers helping the Market survive through countless generations and major changes to Edmonton’s downtown core. In the mid-1960s, the Edmonton Downtown Farmers Market (EDFM) relocated to 97th St to make way for the construction of the city library. In 2004, the EDFM moved outdoors to 104th Street. And in Fall 2011, the EDFM became year round by moving inside City Hall in the winter months and back out on 104th Street in the spring and summer months.

Without a doubt, the Edmonton Downtown Farmers Market has a rich history that still influences the market today. We are excited to embark upon the next chapter of the Market with our new home on 10305-97 street in The Quarters.

for those who have not been to the new location and are not within easy walking distance even when the weather is reasonably nice, the free parking is the "try us, you'll like us" teaser letting everyone know (a) it's easy to give us a try and (b) it's free to give us a try.

i'm not sure why anyone would find that offensive - it's not trying to convince anyone who could walk to drive instead. it's trying to let those who need to drive - whether it's to the al fresco market on 104 street or the 124 street market or st. albert's market - that the edmonton downtown market is worth a visit and wants your business and is prepared to work hard to earn it while making it easy for you.

If that is your image of a vibrant urban market, great.

It certainly is not mine.

Don't get me wrong, I like going to it and enjoy the new building, but that image and how that is being marketed is brutal.

Offensive? Hardly. Lazy marketing... I might go there. Pandering to car culture, who likely aren't the demo for most farmers markets, id say is a mistake.
I haven't been and I certainly won't go because I can save literally 1-2 dollars while I spend 6 bucks on a small bag of carrots.
Gimme something to actually care about to make me split my time and money from the other more established locations.

Agreed on these points. I've been a few times since it re-located but never for my usual grocery run, given that most items are much more expensive than even local grocers like the 95 St. Italian Centre and Lucky 97 in Chinatown (both of which I shop at regularly).

except it's real competition isn't the italian centre or lucky 97 (or at least not yet). it's real competition today is the al fresco market and the 124 street market and the st. albert farmers market etc. where most items are also more expensive than local grocers.

What's your image of a vibrant urban market, no parking?

While it looks great how we are getting these urban farmer markets that look like 'piazza' style European markets, the communities within close enough range to not require vehicle transportation are just not dense enough, nor is the demand from everyone within that community.

If we want these markets, they must cater to a larger geographic footprint.
