Whats the difference? They sell office chairs, safes and such? Seems they still sell food.

More bulk items, like that place on Ellice at Route 90.

^ less food, no bakery, no household items (clothes, books, toys, seasonal stuff).

Apparently the food sold is in even BIGGER portions than a regular Costco - heavier emphasis on convenience type foods (candy, snacks, etc.)

So yeah, not ideal.

Ya not ideal. I don't really buy a lot of produce etc there. I don't need 6 heads of lettuce at one time.

I started hearing almost a year ago the planned Portage Ave Costco site was not proceeding. It is notable this talk started well before the pandemic impacts hit. It is from someone that has reason to be "in the know" but I had put it down to them possibly not being as in the know to be aware of that then. That said after the zoning variance stuff cleared the process more than a year ago absolutely nothing happened on a location that should have been well underway before the pandemic started to impact future construction.

Winners on Regent is moving into the old Home Outfitters space by Wal-mart. Surprising since I thought they may close that store with Marshall's across the street.

It's actually in the space that was Wal-mart, WoolCo, whatever else prior to the building being chopped in half When the 3 big boxes were built in the back.

One would think that all the geo tech stuff like soil conditions would have been completed before they go and spend money on drawing up site specific blueprints and the other requirements that are required for a building permit/zoning variance's.

Noticed Gateway Newsstands is now called Square News at Winnipeg Square. Wonder if they’re closing locations now.

They are a franchise operation, so maybe the person that has that location did not want to renew and thought going out on their own was a better option.

Those shops must be getting annihilated... there was a Globe article recently about stores in Toronto's underground PATH. Business is bleak, with some of the shop owners reporting some days without sales. So if that's the case with mighty Toronto with its huge office towers and subways, one can imagine how it must be here.

It is very quiet in Winnipeg Square these days. This morning on my walk in, Starbucks and A&W were the only thing open. Cafe Asante Booster Juice, Thom Bargen were closed and they're normally open by then.

Thom Bargen in the P&M Circus has yet to reopen since the pandemic started.

Newspaper sales have almost totally evaporated, and I can't imagine there is much action selling magazines. I would imagine much of their business must come from selling snacks and cigarettes?

Anyone know what is going on with Northgate now? I saw an ad in the local Times about some new redevelopment at the back and the carwash from the looks of it and it has a link to thenewnorthgate.com but that website doesn't seem to work. And info on that?

I vaguely remember reading somewhere it was going to be residential (condos?). I don't remember where I heard that so I could be out to lunch

Yeah from the image it looks like they are doing something along the back parking lot though looks too small to be houses or condos but maybe that is it and also redeveloping the theatre and car wash and getting rid of Fit For Less from the looks of it and adding a park! Supposed to be an open house on the 15th but who knows if that is still happening now.

Considering in the past similar places have had some really unusual magazines like overseas versions of ones that might sell and Winnipeg Square barely even had stuff you would see other places that sell magazines it was fairly clear that was never really their game. Sort of odd as their snack side is lacking too. I can't imagine there are that many people left smoking traditional tobacco to be covering their rent.

wow. Really? do you have image? I cant find it. I'd be surprised that Fit4Less would be leaving but i guess it's a big space and you only charge $ 15 per month per membership.
