It's interesting to have Ottawa quoted as one of the best "old city" skylines considering where not that old.
Despite the heavily debated height restrictions in Ottawa that have produced some mediocre buildings over the last 60 years, we have to appreciate the value they've had in preserving the dominance our landmark historic buildings of the previous 100 years in our skyline.
Over the last 5-10 years, we've finally been seeing movement on much taller proposals and builds west of the traditional downtown, which will result in the best of both worlds: a historic city core skyline of Gothic, Tudor and Châteauesque towers and spires, along with a modern downtown of glistening glass skyscrapers a little further down the cliff (cluster of towers will be on the right side of the second image).
Side-note, looking at the first image of the Château Laurier, the proposed addition worries me quite a bit.
