That's interesting, especially after years of rumours about a location on McPhillips. A location on Main will make it a lot more convenient for people in the northern exurbs like West/East St. Paul.

I wonder if Walmart is still planning something up around there after plans for a location by Lagimodiere and the Perimeter fell through a few years back?

Apologies for quoting myself... in addition to the West St Paul location, there is a separate advertisement for the previously rumoured on here conversion of the St James location to a "Costco business center" with a start date of March 2021.... hopefully these things don't get delayed as selfishly it would be great for me

I would think Costco must be thriving in the current circumstances... if anything I'd expect them to speed things up now. But I don't know if I'd expect a lot of development near Costco... the retail sector other than a handful of dominant big boxes (supermarkets, home improvement retailers) and online stores looks like it's ailing.

The residential growth and current lack of literally almost anything retail and dining in West St Paul screams opportunity if Costco is there to anchor the consumer traffic. If I had money I know I'd be investing in the immediate vicinity. The pandemic will obviously slowdown the commercial development relative to a no pandemic situation, but there is a massively underserved market here with lots of disposable income ready to spend. Whoever gambles will be rewarded. Come on down Keg, Joeys, Earls, etc...

And supermarkets are going to start shrinking soon. Volia by Sobeys the first big shift, and they've been doing lots of advertising.

Anyone know what's going into this old school on Elgin Ave? The new women's hospital is partly on its old playground if I'm remembering correctly.

I drove by today and it looked as if a large greenhouse structure was going up. Similar to what I have seen in fruit and vegetable growing areas of Holland and Spain (might not be helpful).

Also I noticed large sewer and water mains have gone in this summer. Probably some kind of grow-op.

I believe they put in a storm-water retention pond as well.

Permanent fence - not construction fence. At least that's what it appears to be.

my guess it that its just going up to deter people from dumping trash and using the lot as a cut-through.

I would have thought the go op would have been in the existing former meat packing building as its more secure than a greenhouse in a fenced compound. The grow op does sound realistic though as when I drove by today there was a large amount of hydro stuff on the ground waiting to be installed.

It is not construction fencing. As you guessed it is just to secure the site.

They did stick three larger and taller posts in the ground at one corner - which look like they would be for some sort of sign, either to advertise a future development, or maybe giant "for sale" sign.

We should find out soon enough...

I'll believe it when I see it here: https://www.costco.ca/new-locations.html

Costco probably had picked the McPhillips/Murray Road site with anticipation that the Chief Peguis extension would be built and the likelihood of that happening in this century is doubtful. Maybe if Winnipeg upped it's game and developed some twenty first century infrastructure business would be more receptive to invest here!

Not disagreeing with you, but the City has over 40 major projects that need to get done to bring our infrastructure up to adequate standards, and the $400 million needed for Chief Peguis Trail extension is a drop in the several billion dollar bucket.

How does a City grapple with simultaneously low property tax, urban sprawl, massive infrastructure needs, less than $250 million in available debt capacity, an uncooperative provincial government, and the expressed desire to attract even more people and more businesses?

Cutting a few million dollars from the Police Budget and trying to recoup a few extra million dollars from fringe suburbs to pay for part of the growth has proven impossible thanks to recent legal challenges. How will we ever find a way to invest billions in much needed infrastructure to make this city a better place when no one is willing to pay for it? At this point, the most feasible course of action is to beg Trudeau and Chinese investors via the Infrastructure Bank for a few crumbs to fix a few bridges about to collapse.
