The long-term plan is a mixed use tower. The short-medium term, I believe at last report, is a combo of a temporary park and surface parking facilities? Though, given the economy "short-medium term" could mean 5-10 years in my uneducated guesstimate.

I may have misheard, but I think Global news reported that it was possibly going to be used as a temporary public gathering space for the NHL Playoffs

I like the design. I think they are smart utilizing the existing parkade and as Lam states in the interview it will save a ton of time and time is money.

The detail on the windows and little roofs is really cute (excluding The first little tower with the fake windows). I know you all hate this one and probably don’t wanna see any more photos of it, but I still think it will be successful but ONLY if they stick to the plan of lots of programming in the parking area…

And sorry again for my crappy bicycle drive-by photography... This one really shot up!

I've seen much worst. The white housings extending outwards from the tops of the facades are unforgivably intrusive . It's a completely foreign style to Edmonton. It's not a modern contemporary style. Everyone knows it's a fake.

In person, it is very cartoonish because the elevations and sizes of each individual facade are not realistic at all. But they definitely could have made the entire parking area a big plaza with seating and fountain if they wanted to go for a true European feel. The only shitty thing is that in this immediate area there is little to no street parking on 111ave, and with single-family residential so close there would be a lot of pissed off people if there ended up being heavy usage of the spaces in front of their homes.

But maybe there’s still hope that the capital plaza will be our little Europe with coffee/beer/snack kiosks and large patios?

I had another thought. The white housings I thought were for directional lights pointing down is probably temporary protection for downspouts during construction.

The scale of the facades not looking realistic goes back to my original post. A block of buildings of this height and width is completely foreign to Edmonton. There are some facades that do look unusually narrow.

The materials are modern interpretations. However, authentic Dutch streets have been modernized too. I'm really not into recreating history in places where it never existed. It always looks fake. The developer didn't cheap out.

i’m not sure what you mean by “white housings” but if it’s the projecting elements near the peaks, they’re not protecting downspouts (those would be in the valleys, not the peaks), they’re meant to replicate “lifting beams”. the buildings being replicated were too narrow and stairwells too steep to move anything large into or out of the upper floors. these projecting beams were used to hang a block and tackle from and those things were hoisted up and down and moved in and out through the windows. you still see them used for that today.

Where is South Jasper ... it runs East to West.

Scotia Place and Enterprise Square are south of 101 Ave unless you meant 100 Ave South? But that would exclude the block between Jasper Avenue and 100th Ave, MacDonald Drive etc.
