I love this kind of lamenting position: missing alternative indeed. I wonder if Mr. Lum is planning to emmigrate to one of our immigration source countries to help reduce the pressures of endless growth. And, in terms of endless consumption, I assume he does not use a computer, cellphone, aircraft, automobile, or other industrial mechanism of modern life. I wonder where the 'bronze' came from?

I've gotta say, this has come together really really nicely.
Really well done.

I understand some people might have some (legitimate) issues with aspects of it, but overall I have to say they really pulled it all together quite well.

A great looking building that sets a new high bar for Edmonds. The wide sidewalk and bike lane are also excellent.

My one complaint is Burnaby's traffic engineering department. Why do they maintain on keeping this section of Kingsway 6 lanes wide? Kingsway from Edmonds to Griffiths Ave doesn't see the same level of traffic as from Griffiths to Metrotown. The real bottleneck is actually the connection to 10th Ave. That and the fact that only the centre lane ever flows well outside of rush hour due to the odd mix of parking restrictions and left turns being allowed. Even that is debatable considering the amount of weaving that happens as "the fast lanes" suddenly stop.

Burnaby should use some of their billions to re-engineer this section of Kingsway to have 4 narrower lanes that actually work and are appropriate for an urban area. Use the extra space for alongside wider sidewalks, a treed median and bike lanes. The commercial strip has the potential to be a thriving destination if the street itself wasn't so terrible.

I haven't been able to find anything that says it's not happening - I also can't find anything that says when it will open. Basically Burnaby will have one government store in each of the town centres and then will decide if more are needed or not (much better than the Sof, which is doing a 'just say no').

I would presume it'll open on the Kingsway side as that's where all the smaller CRUs are located. I haven't been able to find anything specific about the retail other that what's already been posted here.

I wandered by today and the grocery store has signs installed - Buy Low Foods. None of the other stores have signs or anything to show that they'll open soon.

No word on locations, though I read that Club 16 is taking over Brentwood and Richmond locations.

That makes sense since it originally used to be Fitness World before they got into that endorsement deal with Steve Nash at the height of his NBA popularity - right before that relationship went sour and he spent years in court (and beaucoup dolares) and litigation trying to extract his name and brand from that business relationship...unsuccessfully.

In a weird way, this pandemic and the terminal damage it did to them and their brand (along with countless other 'mom and pop' gym clubs country-wide) saved him and finally set him free.
It also doesn't hurt that the previous owners damaged the brand so much with financial mismanagement and bad PR and customer relations, that it was inevitable that any prospective buyer would insist on a name change.

I don't know which locations would qualify as "higher end" that would be closed or saved, although I've heard that the Trevor Linden club franchise will possibly be buying some locations for their own brand (EDIT: I just read your link which was basically stating the same thing. Though not this location). The one that would have been at this location is almost certain to be bought out by someone if the former SNFW opts not to proceed to open it.

(*on the flip side, it might all be part of an elaborate re-branding/re-packaging effort by the very same parties in an attempt to use the lockdown to clear debts, get creditors off their backs and re-open under a "new" name and brand. ....
....or so the rumour goes.

Well it's not like there's been much to discuss. All the info we can find online is still the really basic stuff from over a year ago. I wish they'd post something about the retail - who's taken some of the units, when it's expected to open, etc. I'm guessing there probably hasn't been much change since I wandered by a month and a half ago.

I saw signage or a banner at the Brentwood location yesterday that it was Club 16 coming in.

It must be a tough time for developers all over to find retail tenants for the retail and commercial components of their projects in this Pandemic environment - especially for those who are in the process of completing their projects.

Expect to see a lot of empty and vacant units for a while yet longer - even after they complete and are ready for occupancy.

Except the info I've found says all of the CRUs are either leased or 'under contract' - and unless they've gone bankrupt it seems a little late for stores to be backing out now. When I walked by the smaller units looked basically finished and waiting for whichever store is taking it over to do their own work before moving in.

The list of who we've heard is moving in.

2nd floor: fitness (we'll find out which one later)

ground floor: Buy Low Foods (now hiring), G&F Financial (also taking over most of the office space), BC Cannabis Store

I've also seen iData Research, who I'd presume are taking some of the office space.
