That's as stupid as saying "Well George Floyd used a counterfeit bill so he deserved to be strangled to death". More stupid than that actually, because the protestors did nothing wrong. Pointing a gun at people for no good reason is a felony, though it's unlikely they'll get arrested for it, being rich and white lol

The funny thing is the BC residents were born in Canada and Karen wasn't.

Love how the racists are chalking up all their hateful behavior to mental illness. Why don't the BLM extremists ever get that benefit of the doubt lol

Because emotional outbursts are not indicative of actual politics.

You have mentally fragile people who are lashing out.

These same people would be rambling out about the lord jesus if it were a taboo in our society.

These same people regularly call out their kids for being whores, liars, cheats etc.

Making a special racial category to "sniff out" systemic racism is a joke.

People under stress will say hateful and hurtful things when overwhelmed. You're not autistic, a child, or stupid. You should know this about adults if you are entering a conversation about policing.

Yes. I don't know what firearms regulations and legislation are like in Missouri, but yes they do appear to be extremely careless. In my book they might deserve to lose their right to have those things, but the U.S. is the U.S., so...

Especially the lady pointing it directly at people. Sheesh. It seems to me you don't need to point a gun at people in order to send a message. If they can see it - message received.

I was always brought up that you didn't point anything that even looked like a gun at people, and that that was a crime. Even a toy gun.

This is an area where norms are different in a lot of the US compared to Canada. In Missouri anybody can legally carry a firearm without a permit.

It's also I gather particularly delicious that this lady says she is originally from the U.S.

Some people figure this out sooner than others but as the normal person matures they ideally come to realize that the world and life are mostly grey as opposed to a binary relationship where all the good guys wear white hats and all the bad guys wear black ones.

In this particular instance, it's totally possible to find this couple stupid and dangerously (criminally, by Canadian standards) irresponsible in their behaviour, but at the same time understand that they might be concerned for their personal safety and their property at the sight of a large crowd of protestors marching by. Especially in light of the outcomes of certain protests in the past month.

Classic midwestern US geography: gated streets of gilded age mansions just a few blocks away from ridiculously dangerous bombed out African-American neighbourhoods.

https://www.google.ca/maps/@38.6468074,-...ZO_Dol2W3itYz73A!2e0!3e11!7i16384!8i8192

Incredibly disturbing to any egalitarian Canadian.

Yes, it's always a bit of a shock isn't it? This is literally the exact same distance from those mansions as my house is from the neighbourhood elementary school my kids went to on foot here:

During my brief time in St. Louis I was able to experience the dream of 34-36 Celsius with what seemed like it must have been 99% humidity plus random thunderstorms and downpours. If somewhere in Canada had this weather we'd never hear the end of how amazing it is in the weather thread.

St. Louis really did not feel reminiscent of most Canadian cities I've been to at all.

Ooof! I felt that as a direct hit.

Years ago at a concert in Winnipeg (friend went) Billy Bragg said that Minnesota was the most "Canadian-like" place there was in the US. It was wrong then, and it's obviously even more wrong now.

I think SWJ ideology is toxic and dangerous, but Douglas Murray takes a more sympathetic view in this clip.

I would imagine a few factors are at play. As has been mentioned upthread, deinstitutionaliation has played a huge role. That was decades ago though, and it's definitely gotten worse recently.

The housing crisis is likely a big driving factor. Homelessness compounds mental illness. It's understandably difficult to achieve stability in such a precarious situation, not to mention the traumatization and dehumanization that the homeless are often exposed to on the streets, in the shelter system and in their dealings with government agencies (the police, social services, etc.). Skyrocketing property values and development has wiped out a giant chunk of affordable and attainable housing options. Rooming houses are torn down for luxury condos, for example, while the demand for such housing increases. Meanwhile, underfunded housing agencies like TCHC can barely keep current units safe and viable while wait lists increase exponentially.

And so our parks fill up with tents, periodically and grudgingly culled by over-funded and dysfunctional police forces. Discarded syringes and broken crack pipes litter our alleyways, and the incoherent screams of the seriously ill fill the corona-quiet nights.

I understand why people want to find similarities, and they are interesting. Often Americans are just making arguments from stereotypes, e.g. they hear Minnesota or Oregon are "like Canada" and that becomes self-reinforcing. Californians often see that the natural environment is similar between Canada and the US while we have nothing that looks like LA.

To me it is more remarkable that places only a few hundred kilometers apart, or even less sometimes, can be markedly different when they are on different sides of the Canada-US border. Canada's cities are particularly distinctive which makes sense. The GTA doesn't feel like Upstate NY at all and the Vancouver metro area doesn't look like something you'd find anywhere in the US.

I think its much more fundamental than that.

Our society revolves around a brand of consumerist hedonism.

Conservatives are hated because they get in the way of the money for pleasure equation.

They have this crazy idea that not everything in life should revolve around buying pleasure.

It is the reason virtually every major corporation is on board with the far leftists agenda.

The idea of returning to a more family values, lets get together on a sunday culture is cancer to those wanting to sell iphones etc.

Make no mistake the current attack on the right is a direct front lead by marketing companies and other institutions who want us all reduced to pleasure seeking activities.

Consumerism is a cancer, and unfortunately it is a conversation we are not even beginning to have.

Unfortunately as soon as you start to have this discussion people try to push this idea that materialism and consumerism are the same thing.

But you have to ask, "how much of the social change and progress throughout history which we now take for granted has been brought to us by conservatives versus progressives?"

Hey, I'm a centre-left guy. Yesterday's progressives took five-year-olds out of mines, marched for unions and women's suffrage, and fought for equal rights for all.

SJWs are ideological fundamentalists who see racism on syrup bottles, assert that men are literally women, and are mostly concerned with assigning people into tribes. They exert many of the hallmarks of cult-like behaviour, most prominently the inability to engage with or even countenance viewpoints originating from outside of the cult.

Yesterday's progressives and today's SJWs are not the same people.

Unrelated to the topic of this thread, but it's amazing how the downtown just suddenly ends with apparent single family housing just across the street. Do we have that anywhere in Canada?

I'm on the side of the progressives of history btw. But if history teaches us, these progressive (sjw) ideas are the ones that will take over, or we can hope that it's only a trend that will go away like the hippy movement. Do they still make bell bottoms?
