Is this in context of the mental health conversation or in context of OP.

Because I think quite certainly it fits into the conversation of why being mentally unstable isn't near as well as supported as people around here pretend it is.

Did people always act like idiots during contentious confrontations and we're just seeing recorded evidence of it now, or is social media a vortex that causes people to lose their cool?

Normies really have a hard time appreciating what it means to be in a declining social circle. So much of our social inequality is about getting stuck around shitty people and tolerating their shittyness compounding with your shittyness.

The real inequality in our society can be measured in the strength of your social structures. When you're surrounded by good people it is very easy to claim you live in a relative utopia and when you are surrounded by shit heads you end up living in a total dystopia. You are who you know, and when you have mental illness not a lot of people want to know you.
These threads area always interesting. A few pages ago, I disagreed with nearly everything you posted. Suddenly I find myself agreeing with nearly everything you're posting.

I am sure there is horrific abuse. We must accept both that and the difficult context. Such environments chase away good workers with career alternatives and impose constraints on what can and can't be done humanely. There's often risk and the alternatives are not always good.
.
Agreed. I do think that compared to 40-50 years today we do have more safeguards and checks and balances that mean alarm bells go off a lot more quickly and effectively in cases of abuse. Though they are by no means foolproof.

I think it's always been like that. I don't for a minute believe that the racial and prejudicial angle is worse than it used to be, and I think it may actually be lesser. That is quite telling especially when you consider that almost all of our communities have gotten more diverse.

Thinking of a minor car accident I witnessed about 25 years ago on Highway 17 about 45 minutes east of Ottawa (Cumberland-Rockland area).

The two guys involved were a white anglo guy and a South Asian man. I honestly don't recall who was in the wrong but the white guy was quite irate. The OPP arrived on the scene very quickly, and the white guy ranted as he told his side of the story. One of the things he said, pointing at the other motorist, was: "You P-word (slur used by some in Ontario for South Asians) shouldn't be allowed to drive!"

I was quite shocked, but the cops just laughed, as did the other witnesses.

EDIT: Today I might have said something, like "Franchement!, that type of language is not acceptable. Watch your tongue bucko!"

I've spent time in clerkship training and internship in psychiatric wards (not the general wards found in most hospitals, but in the big provincial psychiatric hospital in Halifax), and I can guarantee you that I have seen things that would make your hair curl. From manning the admissions office in the middle of the night when people were brought in in their full blown glory, to the forensics ward, to the "special" ward hidden away in a separate building accessible by a tunnel where the (for the want of a better descriptive term) drooling vegetables were kept. My eyes were fully opened by the experience. Many people just have no idea the depths of psychopathy that can be found in such a place.

Some people just cannot be reasoned with, and/or are a pure danger to themselves or to others. Some patients have to be kept in restraints almost all their awake hours to keep them from clawing their eyes out or biting their fingers off. Other people are dangerous or violent paranoid schizophrenics who require maximal sedation (to the point of being almost completely obtunded). In the "special ward" (which I think was called Unit 9, but the memory fades), the walls were not uncommonly smeared with feces and the air was often filled with horrendous anguished screams or howls that only a demented person could utter. It was a real eye opener, and completely exhausting for the staff. Most of the staff was great, but there were some who just couldn't handle the continual chaos of Unit 9. Stress leave was common, as well as resignations, but some staff took their frustrations out on the patients. You had to keep an eye out for this happening, as it was a continual risk...........

Unit 9 of course was a special place, and the other 95% of the NS Hospital was a relative paradise in comparison, even the forensics ward. Most patents were well looked after and treated compassionately.

This is why I think the government has gone too far in terms of deinstitutionalization. There really are some people out there who should not be walking the streets. Psychiatric hospitals are difficult places to live, but properly supervised and controlled, some people would be better off here than on the street. At least they are warm, well fed and looked after.

Less exposure to and vulnerability to substance abuse, pimps, etc. too.

Having a camera in your face probably doesn't help mental stability in an already stressful situation.

Absolutely. Especially the hard drugs. They can make things exponentially worse.

I would have spent my time training there in about 1983/84. Drug abuse certainly existed back then, but the situation was nowhere near as bad now, with the amount, variety and strength of illegal drugs infinitely worse. Some drugs are bad for unlocking latent psychopathic tendencies.

You'd think by now racists would get the drill: When the phones come out, you shut up and walk away. But so many seem to be so adamant to destroy their own lives.

Perhaps, though it's also apparent to me that most people seem to forget they have a camera in their face in these instances. I guess that might be a result of them being small and shaped like phones these days. Though we all should know by now.

It was admittedly a bit of a rhetorical question. Though the way he wrote it, it sounded pretty categorical that the marchers were totally innocuous. I'd heard conflicting info about that, so was genuinely curious.

Ground zero for homelessness, mental illness and substance abuse on the streets in this metro is the Shepherds of Good Hope at the corner of King Edward Ave and Murray St on the outskirts of the Byward Market.

Since I have relatives in eastern Ontario and we need to pass there to visit them, my kids have been exposed to this since they were very young.

All of which to say that by my estimation a significant percentage of the people on the street there (there are generally about 100 on the various sidewalks around that intersection at any given time) have visibly serious mental illness problems. Obviously this is a totally armchair diagnosis but in another era my guess is that quite a few would have been institutionalized.

This is where I might want to point out that I've been in proximity to multiple suicides. One was a cop who was literally freaking about all the cop hate the day he offed himself. The other was sucked into that world of overly permissive shit.

I was a Truddeau supporter in 2015, I only revolted when he did his cabinet selection based on gender. To me this was a very basic test of ones philosophy and Truddeau and his supporters failed horridly.

In the summer of 2016 I worked a door to door sales job( I figured it was the best way to bootstrap my inability to sell myself).

A)At the start of the summer trump was a joke to me.

B) However my cop friends suicide happened.

C) Best friends daughter was diagnosed with non verbal autism.

D) Best friends brother was diagnosed with Cancer at the age of 29.

E) I had roommates who were literally wailing and crying themselves to sleep as they were worried about their family members getting gang rapped down in venezuela.

F) Then the Orlando shootings happened and everyone ignored it was caused by a muslim. (my Venezuelan room mates were also draq queens, so that hurt more than a bit at the time)

G) I ended up working in a muslim "dominated" office for a week, where it became abundantly clear that a certain respect towards woman and gays wasn't exactly present.

H) Top it off when the Brexit vote happened I got called a racist, because as a newfie I supported the idea of a rather large island gaining independence(I had absolutely no idea that it was a right wing act).

I) The final act was getting a sense of how much progress I was making doing door 2 door sales, and how much progress it would make for my autistic peers. The fact that I had no minimum wage and yet was getting tremendous personal development was something I couldn't get past. It was obvious that this type of boot strappy solution would never get presented by the traditional left and it made me think quite aggressively about my personal politics.

So by the end of that summer I decided I didn't have much choice but to go right.

I'm not a right winger because I'm against left wing arguments. I'm a right winger because left wing arguments are against themselves. The left has lost its cohesion and there seems to be nobody pushing for a rule book or structure that might actually keep people in check.

It's quite obvious when somebody is holding a camera up in their face.

But yes to address the other point, paraphrasing an old business prof: don't say anything you don't want blasted on the front page of a newspaper.

They are lucky they didn't shoot themselves or somebody else. Safeties were off, fingers on the trigger, pointing them everywhere.
