Yup, both airlines are consolidating to their main hubs. You can't even get to YWG, YQR or YXE from YYC on AC - even on a little Dash-8 400. You have to route through YYZ or YVR.

In April, YYC had the highest number of domestic passengers in the country, even ahead of YYZ. Where YYC has been hit hardest is international. July shows a little promise for recovery there, but we still have a long way to go.

While this is certainly true, biggest difference is WestJet has at least attempted to maintain a decent presence at YVR, where as Air Canada has basically abandoned YYC.

Also its looks as if AC's international focus (other than to Asia) is mostly on YYZ/YUL. They will only have a single route from all of Western Canada to Europe in July (4x weekly YVR-LHR). Even KLM will have a better Europe-Western Canada presence than them in July.

Perhaps they figured WS would be restarting in the West faster than they have?

Toronto just has to talk about itself in front of the entire country. Says a lot that their subforum is dead too.
I think Vancouver has the busiest subforum in the whole country.

But that’s just it... AC’s intl focus is naturally YYZ/YUL - Europe and naturally YVR-Asia. The only Asian route that’s non YVR is YYZ-PVG.

Western Canada threads are active with their own news which keeps them vibrant.

The KLM website is showing July 9 for the first AMS-YYC, hopefully it sticks. Anyone planning to go see it land? I think I will, kinda feels historic.

Not compared to AC. KLM pre-COVID operated daily flights to YYC / YVR and 4x weekly YEG. AF only flies 4x weekly YVR? AC typically flies YYC-LHR/FRA & YVR-LHR/FRA/DUB/ZRH/CDG.

Yup. July 9 is first inbound flight. Plane will overnight and return next day. They've been marketing the additional flights to Canada too, so I would imagine they will actually happen.

They updated their August schedule too and look to operate 3x weekly (subject to change).

What is everyone thinking? Anyone have details on if this is the notice period while small ground handling companies pop up in smaller markets. I was thinking YUL, YCD, YQQ etc.

Parts of WestJet's operations were already contracted out. None of this will affect YYC anyways.

I believe this was probably already in the works, but accelerated due to COVID.

Was this already in the works? I thought Westjet's plans pre-Coronavirus were expansion into Europe and other overseas destinations (hence the purchase of all those B-787s).
(Interesting that the permanent lay-offs do not include pilots or flight crews).

I meant the contracting out of services at it's domestic airports.

Yes, they had big international network expansion plans and probably still do.
