The star printed on site until the 90’s until they built a new plant up at the 400/407 in Vaughan. Even that one was shut down and printing outsourced elsewhere a few years ago. No idea where they print now, but it’s in way, way smaller numbers than 20 years ago.
The Star was a economic behemoth once upon a time. It’s peak stock valuation was over $3 billion in 2003. Their original headquarters was one of the largest buildings in the city where First Canadian Place is today. They moved to this building on the waterfront in what was a very industrial area to facilitate on site printing around the time their old HQ got demoed.. now they just got sold for less than $60 million.
IMO, ideal site with room for expansion and easy highway access for distribution.
Great job on the facade. You have to expect Lifetime and Wallman with screw it up with spandrel panels. Views are terrible for the majority of the density. Only investors would buy here.

It's also typical of any dense, large scale brownfield development anywhere. I don't care for Australian design which is not to say they don't build exceptional more frequently than here. What I really admire is that developers do infill and seldom assemble a whole block. It's a more interesting landscape. King Between Blue Jays Way and Spadina is following that route. They have similar issues with built densities and heritage as here. Large greenfield development is indistinguishable with ours.

Agreed - those towers are atrocious. I think we should expand our horizons and consider Scandinavian architects more often in Canada - beyond the obvious starchitects like BIG and Snøhetta - like Henning Larsen, Helen & Hard, Schmidt Hammer Lassen, Reiulf Ramstad Arkitektur. I really quite enjoy the Nordic aesthetic

Cal and I met each other in a bar for the very first time 'bout a decade and half ago. The bar was located in the Pen Equity sign-shop.
And you're right, there was no mistaking Cal. Generous (pretty sure he picked up the tab)... and a terrific sense of humour.
He had the mock red snapper and a Molson Canadian. I had a bowl of Dapha Ho curry and a Grow A Pear cocktail (prickly pear-infused mezcal, lime or lemon, pomegranate).
Wow, that's pretty impressive. It's always nice to see smaller cities like Barrie get big proposals like this. Hopefully we get to see a new major skyline emerge in the future!
