One of things I'm wondering is, after the Feds have rolled $94 billion off the back of a truck for CERB and CEWS so far, why do we have systemic poverty at all?

If it was that easy to flip a switch and spend billions why is any Canadian homeless? Why isn't mental health care available in a timely matter for all who want it? Why does any Indigenous community not have clean water and housing?

I am saying woke Canadians will complain about Canada being racist (as you complain about Vancouver's ongoing systematic racism toward Asians) yet barely acknowledge anything with respect to French Canadians, or worse.
LOL I don't know man, you brought up French Canadians vs. Minstrel shows.

That's a mischaracterization of the discussion.

French Canadians entered the discussion because of repeated dismissals from some posters to others that "they don't know what it's like" to be discriminated or hated for what you "are".

It turns out some of us do know what it's like.

Blacque Jacque Shellacque is minstrelry. It does not have to be a depiction of black people. The stereotypical historical "Oriental" depiction is the same phenomenon.

The typical definition you will find is along the lines of:

A simplified depiction of another culture, especially black African, for entertainment purposes, generally seen as offensive.

COVID-poverty is going to force more people to live together. That will help.

Part of what I don't like about this discussion is the model that you can put people into 4 pigeonholes in Canada:

1) Woke oppressed minority who understands oppression and demands justice
2) Unwoke oppressed minority who suffers from Stockholm syndrome and must be educated
3) Unwoke Edward Waspington III, who is raised with a silver spoon and thinks he got where he is purely through personal accomplishment
4) Woke George Waspington IV, who was raised with a silver spoon yet knows shame and expresses this through conspicuous social media use; said social media displays conveniently do not require him to give up his silver spoon

Read old posts here, or lots of the noise online, and you will see repeated attempts to pigeonhole people into these groups. Just because you are (1) or (4) doesn't mean everybody who isn't 100% on board with what you say is (2) or (3).

Putting people in (2) is condescending. In Canada we do have (3) and (4) but they're not a big a percentage of the population.

Great. That sounds a lot like homelessness.

If a city is short of 10000 housing units, then giving everyone $1000 a month doesn't change the housing situation at all, the rent just goes up.

Hey, I think more housing needs to be built, no doubt. I'm in the most expensive place to live with incredibly low vacancy rates. But both of those numbers have been changing quickly since COVID19.

indeed, but to be fair, this chap is supposed to be a leprechaun, and as such a mythical figure. I suppose that makes it OK.

Fun fact, according to Wikipedia, the initial interpretations of this fellow depicted him with a bottle of whiskey by his feet, so his present representation is considerably more "woke" than it was before..........

Well now that we have established that everyone on this forum {except dleung of course} is a closet racist and racism is a white only issue, what do we do?

Well for all the talk, there is very little we can do and all the make-work, white-bashing, anti-racism Royal Commissions isn't going to change that. Certainly we can try to root out police brutality and create a non-racially motivated legal system but that does NOT get rid of racism. The reality is that racism is going to be with us for decades and probably centuries to come.

Racism is truly a "equal opportunity employer" and is prevalent in all racial and ethnic groups. Racism is not a thing but rather a mindset and that can take forever to change. All we have to do is look at sexism as an analogy. Women got the right to vote a century ago and yet are still fighting sexism, violence, and discrimination in the workforce. Until there is a PROFOUND change in the fundamentals of our socio-economic-political systems and institutions, racism is here to stay.

If Matt Taibbi says it, you know it's true. In a lament on the state of the American press, this:

Quote:
But police violence, and Trump’s daily assaults on the presidential competence standard, are only part of the disaster. On the other side of the political aisle, among self-described liberals, we’re watching an intellectual revolution. It feels liberating to say after years of tiptoeing around the fact, but the American left has lost its mind. It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness.

The leaders of this new movement are replacing traditional liberal beliefs about tolerance, free inquiry, and even racial harmony with ideas so toxic and unattractive that they eschew debate, moving straight to shaming, threats, and intimidation. They are counting on the guilt-ridden, self-flagellating nature of traditional American progressives, who will not stand up for themselves, and will walk to the Razor voluntarily.

They’ve conned organization after organization into empowering panels to search out thoughtcrime, and it’s established now that anything can be an offense, from a UCLA professor placed under investigation for reading Martin Luther King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” out loud to a data scientist fired* from a research firm for — get this — retweeting an academic study suggesting nonviolent protests may be more politically effective than violent ones!

...

Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey, who argued for police reform and attempted to show solidarity with protesters in his city, was shouted down after he refused to commit to defunding the police. Protesters shouted “Get the 🞵🞵🞵🞵 out!” at him, then chanted “Shame!” and threw refuse, Game of Thrones-style, as he skulked out of the gathering. Frey’s “shame” was refusing to endorse a position polls show 65% of Americans oppose, including 62% of Democrats, with just 15% of all people, and only 33% of African-Americans, in support.

Each passing day sees more scenes that recall something closer to cult religion than politics. White protesters in Floyd’s Houston hometown kneeling and praying to black residents for “forgiveness… for years and years of racism” are one thing, but what are we to make of white police in Cary, North Carolina, kneeling and washing the feet of Black pastors? What about Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer kneeling while dressed in “African kente cloth scarves”?

https://taibbi.substack.com/p/the-news-media-is-destroying-itself
That scene where the Minneapolis mayor did a walk of shame through the braying mob? Chilling in a very Biblical and/or Maoist sense.

The impression I get keeps getting stronger and stronger. We're going to look back on this time in ten or twenty years with horror, and it's pretty damn clear that it's not the mobs who are going to end up on the right side of history.

Plenty of virtue signalling from the left of course. But I'm not sure history will judge these mobs too much at all. It's a snap reaction to a buildup of racial tension. It's not the first time it's happened and it won't be the last.

Perhaps it will be the end to the ever-increasing militarization of the police, though I don't see departments being dissolved en masse.

Kids these days, amirite?

How sustainable is CERB though? It's going to last 4-5 months and increase the debt massively.

If you want a UBI you need something that is financially sustainable.

Because rolling out $100 billion of cash is easy. If cash solved all the problems, we'd just throw money at things.

Mental health care requires lots of people and hands-on work. Giving a full-blown alcoholic or drug addict $2000/mo. with no strings attached is just going to land them in a ditch somewhere. Someone who hears voices in their head probably doesn't even have a bank account or anything of the like to keep a roof over their heads. It's seriously unpleasant to be homeless in much of this country and I doubt anybody playing with a full deck of cards would voluntarily want to do that.

The Indigenous reserve issue is an example of a political hot potato no level of government wants to touch. Which is a damned shame, as it ends up being municipalities picking up the pieces or broken communities. Since they're communities in the middle of nowhere, we can ignore the problem.
