I second that. Ken would be a great nominee.

Nobody won in that situation. I'm sorry for both sides.

while i appreciate the sentiment it would likely conflict with the existing day job and both have always rightly been full time jobs.

there is also a potential conflict of interest - or perceived conflict of interest - that would jeopardize the credibility of both of them.

i have been a supporter of dba’s mandate for a long time and will now be moving that support to the organizations 4th executive director during that time.

Absolutely. It is very unfortunate it had to come to this.

There could have been an acceptable middle ground, but it seems there's no room for healing and forgiveness yet in the public realm.

I fear that a lot of otherwise good people will be scared off from taking certain jobs, because just breathing the wrong way these days can trigger some people, rightly or wrongly, intentionally or by sheer accident.

Forgiveness now feels like one of the many other virtues that are now deemed unacceptable.

Agreed. Without commenting on the DBAs decision, I feel a lot of this stems from the "outrage" that can be put forth online. The immediate demand to fire/cancel/boycott is much easier to make online than in person. This seems like a situation where a genuine apology and some in person meetings with business owners and local activists would result in forgiveness, understanding and concrete actions to move forward. Missed opportunity in favor of knee jerk reactions.

agreed, but "this" is probably a culmination of things and not "everything".

as noted above, none of us know how much forgiveness there has been even with this end result other than IanO and the dba board. without knowing everything, it's impossible to know whether this may in fact have been the middle ground leaving plenty of room for healing and forgiveness if and when earned.

again, i don't know whether this was entirely due to "outrage online" or not but i have my own doubts that would be the case. i don't believe either the board's initial decision or their subsequent decision to accept IanO's resignation were knee jerk reactions rather than the full board acting with information and deliberation that would have included appropriate levels of forgiveness, understanding and concrete actions to move forward.

You seem to be implying there is more to this than a the one tweet.
You have something you want to just come out and say?

i don’t have any more hard information than anyone else here has.

but i do have 50 plus years worth of experience in the business, volunteer and board communities and i’ve been pretty up front in saying that based on my experience there is likely more behind this than a single tweet.

i don’t know what the more is, whether it was/is justified or overblown or whether it’s just one or both sides taking the high road and moving on. and even if i did learn something more, it wouldn’t be my role to disclose it.

as previously said, i wish them both the best regardless.

The last I'm going to say regarding this general situation is that if the leader of a G7 country can dress up in blackface, culturally-appropriate like a boss, ignore social distancing, and still be given a free ride, then the concept of a fair trial would appear to be based on the bias of one's political convictions.

How about not continuing to double down and something more going on?
Why do you need to imply that something else happened, what do you get for that, what do you KNOW?
The entire second and third paragraphs of your response are either an attempt to fan flames, create rumor/gossip, or worse, and are completely unnecessary aren't they?

A guy lost his job very publicly for doing something regretful, isn't that enough?

Hi all

I am very sorry.

I was wrong, used a term that I did not have a full understanding of and accept the consequences.

We must find a way forward for greater understanding, inclusiveness and education.

Tomorrow is another day, what are you going to do to make it matter.

Ian

Brother....you have nothing to be sorry about. You're a top notch person. Way to many haters on this site these days Believe me. This site, and just like most other social media sites have lost their shine for me and many. This site is not what it once was (:....To much misdirected hatred.

Don't worry Buddy...you are going to bounce back Stronger than before.

We all just need to calm down...Jesus.

No. We should not calm down. We should never calm down. Yes, some people may get caught in the current. But they have the privilege to protect themselves. That might just be their small price to pay for our collective progress.

You realize the Kente cloth they're wearing was gifted to them by the Black Congressional Caucus, right? What an awful example
