So how about this vehicle noise?

I was on Whyte Ave this afternoon, and there was a non-stop parade of noisy motorcycles ripping up and down the street. Some of these machines were loud enough to deafen me, and talking with shopkeepers was next to impossible. The temporary closure of the Timmys parking lot has not helped one bit. There is zero enforcement by the authorities, while the vehicle noise laws are not worth wiping your ass with.

If I need another reason to permanently leave downtown and move to the suburbs, vehicle noise would be it. And I've lived downtown for several decades.

Wait....Im in Windermere in a Keyhole. I literally have 5 neighbors with their motorbikes starting up constantly and ripping in and out of this fooking keyhole. They dont give a shit. I've asked them nice once already this year...be respectful with your machines

Suburbs here. You won't be escaping it. Its becoming a serious quality of life issue driven by pure ignorance. All motorcycles and modified vehicles should have to be tested for their noise output.

Police gearing up to crackdown on drivers breaking noise and speed laws

EDMONTON -- Edmonton Police Service is working on a new enforcement project for traffic noise and speed, the details of which will be announced Tuesday.

EPS spokesperson Scott Pattison told CTV News Edmonton Monday evening that the program will include a “motorcycle amnesty testing event.”

This comes after a rash of complaints about lead-footed and loud drivers on city streets that are less congested than normal due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is the one place where people are just not being good neighbours,” Councillor Ben Henderson said of loud drivers Monday.

Henderson represents the Whyte Avenue area and said resident complaints are common every year, but he believes they’re coming in even faster in 2020.

On Sunday night, Henderson said he heard the problem firsthand from his own backyard in the river valley.

“It was like sitting in the middle of a racetrack. Just going around and around, pretty much continuous noise,” Henderson said.

Vehicle seizures could be coming

The issue has also reached the desks of the mayor and the police chief.

On Friday, Don Iveson and Dale McFee wrote a joint letter to the province asking for law changes that would allow for officers to seize the vehicles of drivers caught speeding 50 kilometres over the limit.

No rule changes have been announced regarding noise specifically, but Iveson hopes a crackdown on speeders will catch noise bylaw offenders at the same time.

“It’s extremely unneighbourly behaviour and it’s bad for business,” Iveson said of Edmonton’s noise and speed issues Monday, adding both are problems that all big cities are wrestling with.

“Vehicle seizure of some of these problem and repeat offender folks will also help, so that’s why we’ve asked the province for that,” Iveson said.

Higher fines considered

After CTV News Edmonton reported on the issue in April, councillors also asked city staff about raising fines for offenders, although Henderson was told they’d likely have to lobby the province for that too.

“In the end, in terms of increasing fines and impounding vehicles and things like that, we would need changes to the provincial act,” Henderson said.

If a solution is not found soon, Henderson worries loud drivers will spark confrontations in the streets.

“There’s a huge anger building here. At a certain point people will get angry and frustrated enough that something really, truly unfortunate may happen. I hope that isn’t the case, and I certainly don’t encourage that,” he said.

EPS planned to provide media interviews about it’s latest enforcement project on Tuesday.

Almost two years ago, Innovate Edmonton launched a grand plan to transform the disjointed technology sector by bringing its players together under the single roof of an empty downtown office tower.

Obviously some use All Lives Matter because they’re idiotic racist pricks. However, to give him the benefit of the doubt, I’ve heard all lives matter used previously by people who had good intentions but didn’t think of how it could be seen as dismissive.

It’s sad that the DBA obviously at this point has to throw him under the bus, less they be attacked. This should have been a simple teaching moment, because WE ALL SHOULD BE MAKING AN EFFORT TO LEARN THIS WEEK. It’s so easy now to act all high and mighty now, but education about All Lives Matter was not pushed to the forefront of social discourse (my wording doesn’t make sense here but you know what I mean) until very recently. Hopefully the intention behind the All Lives Matter Comment was an clumsy attempt to be more inclusive of more locally relevant [Indigenous, Black, LGBTQ, POC] lives matter.

Moral of the story is that this is all a distraction so that we forget that our last Provincial election showed that Alberta is comfortable with weighing out how much racism, homophobia, and general discrimination is ok to “protect our economy”. The answer should be none. But instead we end up with this fucking homophobic/closeted(?) prick kenney that wants to turn us into THE U.S.

Dear DBA Board,

Last week, I made comments on social media that I deeply regret.

I fully and completely apologize for using ‘ALM’, a term that is associated with hate and racism. I was wrong to use it and am sorry for the hurt that it has caused.

I plan on educating myself more about this and other issues around injustice, unconscious bias and systemic racism.

I have dedicated much of my life to community building and this comment has undone much of that work. I am disappointed that I have let others down, and I have let myself down.

While I am committed to re-earning the trust of our community partners, that work will take time, and I would not want my personal situation to compromise the DBA’s ability to meet its mandate during the remainder of my term.

With that in mind, I am submitting my resignation as Executive Director effective immediately. I remain a passionate advocate for Edmonton’s downtown, and will look to contribute to that vision in other ways.
