This really underscores the current plight of the aviation industry . . .

British Airways has officially cancelled the rest of the season. They will hopefully be back in 2021.

My updated predictions on resumptions:

Likely to resume:
WS LGW / KL AMS

Undetermined:
WS CDG / AC FRA / AC LHR / WK ZRH

Unlikely to resume:
WS DUB / WS FCO / DE FRA

Not resuming/Cancelled:
HU PEK / EW FRA / AC NRT / BA LHR

Weekly update as of May 24 at 12:30pm. Lot's of changes. Air Canada went from a "hub" to basically a outstation at this point. Their revised summer schedule ex-YYC is pure hot garbage, and apparently are just not bothering with trying to compete with WS. Even domestically is not a whole lot better.

I've again highlighted what's happening in June. Hint: Basically nothing still. If Edelweiss really operates a international flight before both AC & WS even fly to the US, it will be the wackiest of already crazy year.

May will be even worse, as we still had Alaska Airlines & even KLM in April.

345 international passengers in likely higher than what we will see in May & possibly June combined.

These numbers are even more stunning when you consider Calgary International Airport is one of only four airports in Canada that have been accepting international flights since mid-March. (Trans-border as well as Mexico, the Caribbean and Saint Pierre and Miquelon were not affected by the new rules).

345 international passengers for the whole month of April - a 99.8% drop from April 2019!

Just wait until May, and that drops further 100%. Despite that designation, there hasn't been a single International flight since April 5 and the next scheduled one is June 21!

On a positive forward note, WestJet has fairly decent bookings in July. Looks like they've picked up several after BA & AC both dropped LHR. Even CDG & DUB is looking not too bad.

Three Antonov AN-124 aircraft arrived at EIA within 24 hours. Interesting to see how freight has gone up now that cargo capacity on scheduled international passenger jets has all but disappeared. The article doesn't say what the cargo was but AN-124 are frequently used to carry oversized/overweight oil and gas equipment. The article (below) mentions an increase in the transport of PPE and e-commerce deliveries.

YEG - Up to 2x daily
YMM - 1x daily
YQU - 1x daily
YUL - 2x daily
YYZ - 4x daily
YVR - 4x daily

Up to 14x daily flights. That's actually nearly double what they flew here in May despite operating a hub.

For the rest of the summer, only YOW / YLW and possibly FRA will resume. Anyone looking to travel either to SK or Manitoba will have to make an out of the way connection in either YYZ or YVR.

WestJet: (Schedule starts June 5)
YXX - 5x weekly
YQQ - 4x weekly
YXC - 3x weekly
YXJ - 3x weekly
YKA - 3x weekly
YLW - 2x daily
YCD - 4x weekly

I went on to Edelweiss this morning funnily enough and it looks like they are only operating two flights in June and that's it. When you try and "book" anything in July and onwards it says seomthing like "no flights available in July" "no flights available in August" etc....

Appears that KLM will be the only European airline operating from YYC this summer.

Their July-September schedule seems wonky. They loaded a full season update in which ZRH-YYC is open for reservation on Wednesdays, but the return on Thursdays is scheduled but zeroed out. Only scheduled once weekly for the whole summer.

I do agree that they likely won't be operating.

UPDATE: They’ve re-opened reservation for YYC-ZRH legs too now.

As for KLM, I've waiting to see if they update their schedule cause I also can't seem them jumping back into all 5 of their Canadian destinations at once.

What a difference.

180 flights a week for WS, and only up to 98 a week for AC.

AC has essentially already de-hub’d YYC.

Not so sure. All airlines will emerge smaller out of this once the dust clears. Do you honestly think an airline can sustain 4 hubs in a country with such a tiny flying base as Canada, post-COVID? I don’t.

Even 3 is a stretch, but they have no choice but to maintain some presence at YUL. They don’t have that constraint at YYC. AC doesn’t even have a pilot base at YYC. I’d be the easiest decision ever made.

Even as a frequent flyer for many years I for one won't be flying again any time soon (unless they come up with a vaccine and treatment for COVID), especially overseas. Apart from the risk of infection, there's reduced service, higher prices, lengthy (perhaps 4 hour) check-ins, risks of last minute changes/quarantine/being stranded, wearing a mask for several hours, aircraft (and airport) sanitation (being in an enclosed space that has just been sprayed with who knows what), reduced in-flight service, carry-on limitations, financial risks (refund issues), etc etc. Perhaps I am being paranoid (or just being realistic?), but it all feels like more hassle than it's worth. I think a lot of people will feel the same as me, and the airlines know it (hence the industry forecasting a very slow return to "normal", whatever the new normal will look like). The Tower of London or the Leaning Tower of Pisa will have to wait for now.

Some positive news for us. KLM has listed YYC as one of 6 long haul routes it intends to resume in July. No changes have been made in the GDS though.

That is good news. And YVR too. And I do see Edelweiss has reopened its reservations looks like a total of 14 flights from YYC-ZRH this summer. The first two as I mentioned before on Mondays before switching to the Thursday flights through September. Anything is possible in the next few weeks.

So I’m guessing that may be it for Alberta-Europe this summer on foreign carriers. YYC-AMS 2 weekly KL and YYC-ZRH 1 weekly on WK.

Looking at their advance bookings for July, LGW looks fairly decent, CDG not bad, with DUB/FCO on the meh side.

If any resume, it will be LGW with a small possibility of CDG. They now have a unique opportunity to be the only carrier flying to the UK (Compared to 4 last July).

I'll venture a guess and say WS may resume LGW, LAX, ATL, JFK, IAH, PHX, CUN and LAS this summer. Doubtful they'll launch new routes to BOS/FCO, and I imagine most seasonal routes (other than maybe SFO?), won't fly this year.

Do you think those routes would be dependent on Canada opening its borders to non-Canadians or permanent residents?
