I just drove up Whalley Blvd past 102 Ave for the first time in, like, ever and there was some digging going on the grassy hilly area to the north of Georgetown and adjoining to the Budget Break and Muffler shop.

Is that part of Georgetown or is it a new development?

That's currently being used as a staging area by Conwest who are doing service upgrades along King George. (As a part of Georgetown.)

That site has an application for 1 tower currently, but apparently council has asked the developer, Janda Group, to do two towers.

Should we create a thread for this project yet?
I'll do it. The quarantine has me pretty bored lately.

Nice to see construction is progressing rather nicely (even with small infill projects like this one) across the city centre, especially considering the current circumstances.

If someone is able to post some renders please do!

Not too shabby.

More renderings are here :

I don't really know about posting images from a different site (whether it's allowed or not, or whether the link is all that should be provided), but if anyone else can or wants to, feel free to go right ahead.

I also don't really know how I feel about those Penthouse/Roof level Amenities ( I'm getting vertigo just thinking of being that high up when I'm supposed to be relaxing) but apparently in Surrey, the amenities requirements are pretty considerable (compared to other municipalities) and that's the sort of thing you have to do to get it done.

EDIT : I didn't realize that a thread had already been started for this project (thanks, skymaster).
So please feel free to disregard this comment and see the images there instead.

The province ran a paid advertisement on Parker a while back. It's a nice looking infill project.

Looks like a YMCA will not replace the former recreation centre after all. Hopefully we hear some news regarding this part of the centre block soon; would be great to see a 50+ storey tower on the site.

Daily hive have also written a similar article regarding the cancellation of the YMCA project in the city centre.

The Avis on King George across the street from Safeway has been fully cleared out for the last couple weeks.

Anyone have any idea if that property was sold or...?

If that stadium project for the Safeway site is going ahead, they will likely need that parcel.

Haha, wow thats one heck of a rendering.

No, I wasn't aware of that reddit post!

The site is apparently under-contract by a Vancouver based group with the means to get it done.

I don't think the stadium would be big enough to justify the Lions moving to, unless their ticket sales are really that low.

A CPL team though. That I could get behind!

Reading the CPL Wiki page it sounds like they'd want a stadium with comparable seating capacity to the Coliseum (16,000). Is there that much space at the Safeway et al location?

Many many years ago I used to work at BC Place, so I know the seating in there is just shy of 60,000 (including the boxes it would be 60). Have BC Lions tickets really dropped that low? FYI Rogers Arena is roughly 20,000.

So wherever they put a stadium in Surrey they're better off trying to get minor league teams. Even then they're competing with Swangard Stadium.

Granted the Lions were trash last year (at one point they were at like 2 wins & 10 losses), but my guess is they had about 10-15k fans at the game I went to.

Just took a quick look at the wiki and they range from 5,100 to 33,000 seats. If it was to be a 16,000 seat stadium, I'm not sure that that would fit on the lot there, especially if you needed more space for parking and such.

I just visually compared the Safeway lot to Swanguard and there's a noticeable size difference. Not that it really matters as Surrey is interested in an upgraded stadium at Bear Creek Park (Oct 2019).
Quote:
The existing track-and-field facility at the park will be upgraded to international competition standards, with the existing wooden bleachers replaced with a 2,200-seat covered grandstand.

There will also be other informal seating areas, concession spaces, meeting rooms, a timing booth, washrooms, and team change rooms.

To better ensure the new stadium can be used for year-round training and regional competitions, the grandstand structure will also include an indoor, 80-metre track, and a fitness gym.

The centre field of the outdoor track will be turf for soccer and football play.
Also in the article:
Quote:
This past March, Simon Fraser University began construction on a new $10-million, 1,800-seat, partially-covered grandstand stadium at Terry Fox Field, which also has a track-and-field.

And just this past week, the Vancouver Park Board approved a new citywide track-and-field strategy that renews and expands about dozen facility locations. While two facilities have been identified for a regulation competition training standard, including the facility at Vancouver Technical Secondary School, the planned competition training facilities are less ambitious than what is being planned by Surrey for Bear Creek Park.
It sounds like there will be a lot of regional competition - and if you're a sports fan that's not a bad thing as we may end up with a wealth of choice in the future.
