This is essentially the track record City Council for the past several years. A campaign of crazies sending non-sensical emails weighs more than appropriate assessment, and planning. "well, sure - we need to do X... that's what all of the people with knowledge of the subject agree on......... but I got 10 emails from residents not wanting us to do X, so I'll be voting against it. 10 emails > 1 well-research, fact-based report. That's just facts."

No amount of reason, common sense, logic, passion, empathy, etc will change his mind once he's locked it in. And he locks it in early.

My favourite from him was that the U-Pass shouldn't be approved by Council - because a minority of students at the UofR voted in the referendum, which rendered the results invalid (in his mind). A quick check of the Municipal elections results... and, yep: by his own logic, he had even less of a claim to his seat on Council, than URSU did with the U-Pass.

(he also has a hate-on for the UofR... started when he "chose" to "resign" as UofR President after just 16 months.)

I'm hoping there are some new names on the ballot for the election this fall, but not holding my breath on that.

Ditto - both to hope for new names, and not holding my breath. There's plenty of potential on Council right now... but most seem far too interested in finding the best way to maintain the status-quo, and not rocking the boat. Almost as if they think when a NIMBY complains, that represents the voice of the electorate.

Use the platform we gave you to move the city forward - don't waste the opportunity by remaining motionless, hoping the train will go around you.

There's a bit too much setting up a legacy going on. Fougere is likely going to run one more term to make sure his legacy stuff gets built. Hawkins was all for the buildings in the park, but recently changed his stance bc he must've been raked over the coals by his resident. I wouldn't be surprised if he is done this term.

Is that a brownfield site? I believe there used to be an old gas station there.

Correct, that was the Esso station that was demolished around the same time as the Sherwood Motel next door.

Given the current situation of office space being in extremely low demand, one could consider a new development to be a bad investment right now. But seeing as they are targeting medical, dental and physio here, those operations will always need commercial space and this could be an attractive new location.

There's almost no chance of that building happening. It was designed for a user that's not going there now.

First, it reminds me of that 4-story 'medical centre' built opposite Best Buy in the east side, which still has a lot of vacant space.
Second, it appears that they must have at least one commercial tenant confirmed for the main floor as they have indicated the dividing line between them. The larger one has a loading dock capable of unloading a semi trailer.

Medical space would seem plausible. As for retail, let the guessing game begin. I am sure it can't be yet another liquor store.

I agree. There is not going to be much demand for new office, retail, or restaurant space for a few years.

I would agree, I don't see much for new builds, but we also know the market here is not always driven by demand.

What does seem intriguing is the amount of retrofits and modifications that will be made to existing spaces over the next 5 years. That being said, it is going to be a painful transition, with a lot of space sitting unused, but it will mean work for architects, trades, and suppliers.

Even today, I was helping provincial government source retrofit office equipment to deal with social distancing requirements.

I noticed today that there is a small crane, a pile of wood trusses, and a few columns-and-beams (which have already been erected) on the property designated as a hotel on Parliament Avenue, west of The Runway development. Hopefully the economy turns around eventually or there won't be a need for another hotel.

There wasn't a need before they started. Hotels in Regina pre-COVID were like 50% occupancy.

Probably planned in advance to be here in time for Grey Cup, if I had to guess.

Unfortunately, not only is it doubtful we'll have a Grey Cup (and if we do, it likely will be without fans, so hotels won't be needed), but the entire league is in some jeopardy if the federal government doesn't provide some emergency funding. I suspect if things are okay, we'll just get assigned 2022 in lieu, but there may not be a CFL post-2020.

The CFL situation is interesting. On the one hand, it is quite popular overall with Canadians. On the other, I would wager that if you asked people "Should $150 million+ be spent by the government to prop-up the league?" most would say no, that it should be spent elsewhere (like local businesses, average people, etc).

My own opinion is that things like the CFL should not be bailed out when smaller businesses are being left to fail. There is obviously a ripple-effect in the economy, but lower-level, smaller operations should be saved first. Or, if aid is provided, it should be in the form of equity in the league/teams by the government, or in the form of loans that will be repaid. If the 2008 crisis has taught us anything, it is that corporate bailouts should come with heavy strings attached, especially in the form of ownership in the company.

They absolutely should not bail out the CFL. A loan to be paid back with strict rules and time guidelines would be an acceptable option.

"REAL says interest in commercial development at Evraz Place still strong despite COVID-19"

“In some ways it’s been a surprise to us … that the existing letters of interest that we had in place related to a proposed hotel development, restaurant development, and a recreational partner — all three of those have been pushing actively to move to final lease phases,” said Tim Reid during a presentation to executive committee this week" "....expect an application by the end of this week for a restaurant at the entrance to the site off Lewvan Drive and revealed that a naming rights deal for the International Trade Centre (ITC) is almost a done deal."
