The longer this goes on the recovery is going to be that much longer, slower and painful. The next 5 years will be very painful for millions of people. With the U.S. approach such a gong show and patchwork right now with 50 different responses this means this crisis will last the rest of the year now instead of a few months.

Data coming out showing that homeless are infected but largely not showing symptoms is both a good and bad sign. Definitely seems to support the theory that people exposed to bacteria/viruses more often have stronger immune systems. Probably a great sign for the third world too.

It will also cause us to rethink our immigration policies and particularly the high number we now allow into the country. We had gotten to the point that Ottawa seemed to think that immigration was good for it's own sake and this childish notion that anyone who wanted immigration levels lowered was either a racist or against diversity. This time will allow Ottawa and Canadians to reflect upon not only the benefits of high immigration but also the many negative consequences of it such as unaffordable and unattainable rentals and real estate, an inability for kids to get into university because so many of the spots are taking by foreigners, and the increasing view that many of our immigrants view Canada as more of a passport centre but have little affinity for Canada itself.

An immigration review will be a good thing and help make future immigration decisions based upon what is best for Canada as a whole which is a conversation we have never actually had.

While immigration will return I don't think it will be remotely close to the numbers we have been getting recently and will drop by more than half. People are now seeing some of the negatives of immigration and not just health ones. People are getting tired of not finding affordable or decent housing, not being able to get their kids into university because a third of the students are foreign, and newcomers having moral codes that are not in line with contemporary Canada. Many business leaders are also been critical of such high immigration rates as it produces false growth not based upon productivity gains but rather just real estate. Unions have also been very critical due to supressing wage growth particularly for service sector workers. This is one of the primary reasons why Canada's productivity growth has been lagging other OECD countries.

This will mean that our cities will, at the very minimum, realize zero population growth and many significant population decline. We will have to begin to plan our finances, education, social, health, infrastructure, and urban planning goals to reflect this new reality.
You sound like an alt-right broken record that gets crazier and more racist the longer it loops. When this Pandemic is all over please get some help. I'm beginning to think you're just a really untalented Russian troll.

He holds a commonly voiced opinion in Vancouver. A bit of a mix of far left and far right ideals.

I really do think we need to stop accusing people of being in Russia or China. We're obviously all Canadian.

You do have to wonder if sharing needles was part of that equation.

Regardless I question those numbers, how did they do the counts? Based on people who were choosing to remain on the streets?

He did not say one racist or alt right thing at all he is just a proponent of lower immigration levels. If calling that racist and alt right then you are the one who needs psychological help, he was simply stating his point of view on immigration levels. The left wing thought control bans have gone way too far on reasonable debate now.

Hi, you must be new here. Basically all of ssiguy's posts in this forum consist of railing against immigrants, The CHINESE, natives, blacks, and Muslims. Not all of which are humourless readings as they're frequently intersperesed with malapropisms and misspellings galore.

I'm not saying he's not entitled to his views. If you believe it's his right to say these things without consequence then so be it. You're just another idiot (left or right) that needs to shut it.

I have been on here since 2002 with over 1700 posts. I don't agree with everything he says but the content of posts you highlighted from him only showed that he advocated lower immigration levels nothing more. There was no racist content in those posts or anything alt right. If you want to see alt right racism look at Austria, or the Southern U.S. but what he posted there was fair to debate civilly.

As a Taiwan patriot by proxy (wife is Taiwanese), sticking up for China doesn't come naturally to me. But China is being characterized as if it were a blank slate that the rich West propped up, that it would be nothing today without Walmart. Even with the standard patterns of capitalism making it practically inevitable that seeking out cheaper production costs would lead to China, Deng Xiaoping's "Four Modernizations" in the early 1980s were what made China what it is today economically.

The EU and North America together make up 34% of China's exports. Which is huge, and I don't know would how those figures track over the last forty years, but China would be a colossus even without that due to the growth of its internal economy.

The rise of China cannot be characterized as being solely the product of suburbanites in Peoria wanting iPhones and vacuum cleaners.

Hard to debate, let alone take seriously, someone who's mental gymnastics allow for this gem:

I also agree that there will be a far fewer Chinese allowed in as China has been very successful is undermining Western democracies by sending people overseas who are here for no other reason than to influence our domestic and foreign policy. China has become an international pariah and this virus for many is the last straw and the world will be united in taming the monster they have created and immigration will reflect that.

When I say "monster" I mean in not just economic terms.

As China has ascended it has proven itself to consistently be an exceptionally bad international player. From intellectual property theft, environmental damage, propping up military dictators, threatening Taiwan and the entire East Asian region, manipulating it's currency to dump their manufactured goods, horrifying human rights record, surveillance of it's of citizens by facial recognition, exporting faulty healthcare goods, undermining democratic country's political systems...…………….you name it and China has done it.

This Chinese virus has {finally} united the planet in clamping down on China's aggressive economic and political aspirations. It did not tell the world about the extent of the virus or it's very high contagion levels and for many that is simply the last straw. They of course continue to pathologically lie about the huge numbers of victims in China itself and Xi now even has the audacity of blaming the whole virus on the Americans.

China's political and economic system is now on life support and it's time we took away the ventilator and increasingly many countries are. Countries and corporations had been very eager to benefit from China's growing economy but are now realizing they made a deal with the Devil.

You don't know what you're talking about. You're making extravagant claims with no basis in reality.

You like to make grandiose proclamations as if you're an expert. But you're not an expert. You're just a doofus with a keyboard and an internet connection.

What bad timing to make this comment. China's definitely been working on this, some high profile cases have won over the past year. Get with the times.

Spin Master Wins Record Damages in China Over Toy Knockoff

The Suzhou Intermediate Peoples’ Court awarded 15.5 million renminbi ($2.2 million), which the company’s lawyers believe is the most ever given to a foreign patent owner in a Chinese court case. The figure was based on sales of copycat products in China.

“Patent cases haven’t been producing very big awards,” in China, said Spin Master’s lawyer, Doug Clark, who works for the Rouse law firm in Hong Kong. “There is a willingness of the courts to take a broader view of damages.” Foreign patent owners have long complained about the low amounts they can get in compensation from Chinese companies that copy their patented inventions. New patent legislation...And it’s not just Bakugan. After local prosecutors declined to act, Spin Master successfully filed a private criminal action against another firm that was selling counterfeits of its Hatchimals on Alibaba and other e-commerce sites. Three people were sentenced to three years in prison and the companies were fined, according to the lawyers. The company’s efforts aren’t limited to China.

Taiwan seems to have done pretty well itself with an industrial export oriented economy a tad similar to China's where you take in resources and add value before exporting them.

Most third world nations that are prosperous rely on being part of the global supply chain. The end products of which usually end up in the first world although the third world does consume quite a bit too.

Having questions about immigration doesn't make you a racist or alt-right (whatever that is). Nor does attacking people who ask questions about it make you a good person. There's a great difference between pointing fingers at immigrants and questioning the system. Learn it.

Immigration is too big a part of the bottom line of Big Money in order for people who question it to not be called racists.

I certainly think S.Korea and Taiwan would have industrialzed after WW11 but I think it is a tad simplistic to say they did it all by themselves. After Mao got into power, the US pumped massive sums into both countries as well as Japan as it served US foreign policy to contain the spread of communism.

This is similar to the Marshall Plan of Europe where the US spent huge sums rebuilding the Continent and most of it, perversely, went to Germany itself. This is not because Americans had any empathy towards the Germans after seeing the results of their genocides but rather it was simply in the US's best interest to get a foothold in the country and assure them that they become a US ally and not a new Stalin run government.

I also think China would have developed as well but not nearly to the extent it has if the West hadn't decided to open the doors. China remains an export oriented country dependent upon the West receiving those those exports.

Stating that an entire nation of a billion people is the "genital warts" of the world is not a criticism of immigration.

Stating that we need to eliminate immigration from African and African descendant nations to reduce crime in Canada is not a criticism of immigration.

Stating that natives are genetically predisposed to crime and alcoholism is not a criticism of immigration.

The above are all racist statements coming from ssiguy over the past 2 years or so in this forum.

I know perfectly well that there are cogent arguments against mass immigration. He's just using the COVID crisis and feigning sympathies for "students" and "homebuyers" not to mention his obvious relish in glee over the fact that the borders are shut down.
