Minimal impact in the west but Sunwing, Porter and Air Transat suspending all operations temporarily.

Sunwing

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business...operations-after-march-23-amid-pandemic/

”Rachel Goldrick, a spokeswoman for Sunwing, said the shutdown is “temporary” and will last until April 10, but “at this time we cannot confirm when commercial southern flight operations will resume. That is why Sunwing was forced to communicate layoffs to our flight and cabin crew members [Monday] evening.”

Porter and Air Transat

Sorry maybe I'm missing something. But if the border is closed, how are these flights operating? I don't get that part. I know they say "essential travel" only, but that's a lot of flights for only "essential travel" (two mainline DFW?). Am I missing something, is the border not closing?

The US carriers probably haven't fully adjusted their schedules yet. They might keep some flights for essential business travel. Maybe their still operating for cargo purposes? The schedules seem to be updated daily and even hourly.

Frontier appears to be completely dropping it's weekly DEN flight. Surprised it even last this long honestly.

Also UA has now zeroed out IAH / DEN reduced to 1x daily / ORD 6x Weekly / SFO 1x daily.

None of the countries that have closed the boarders have closed them to their own citizens. Canadians can re-enter Canada. Americans can re-enter the US. Basically they created the mechanism for people to get home. As most people get back home the volume will die dramatically.

Transit passengers are also permitted. So as an example an American in Japan could transit Vancouver if they had onward travel booked to the US.

There are a number of exemptions for people involved in the movement of goods or people. That is the exemption that permit flight crew to enter Canada and truck drivers to enter Canada to deliver loads from the US etc.

My guess is we are going to see the remaining flights all go mainline to provide air cargo capacity.

Spoke to someone who flew YOW-YYZ-LAX yesterday. He said he was the only person in the US customs hall when he crossed. That was the Toronto US custom hall...Empty! Flew to LA on a AC 787 that was maybe at 10% of capacity.

United is suspending all flights to Canada.

I would not be surprised if we see AC switch some of the trunk routes to all 787/777/330 aircraft to move cargo and the few passengers that need to travel.

Yep, I haven't driven by yet, but if you drive down 11 St NE between 57 and 55 Ave there should be a very rare sight!

I saw on my pals Instagram story today and from what I could tell, I looked like the runway had an AC 77W and 787 on it, as well as a WS 767. and on of the south de-ice aprons has about 7 WS 737's on it and there was about 3 or 4 more scattered around down there on top of that.

On top of that, news broke today that WestJet has laid off around 6900 workers or ~50% of their work force.

KLM posted an update that it will serve AMS-YYC from March 29 - May 3 3x weekly on either 789 or 777. Only Calgary & Toronto are the remaining Canadian destinations on its schedule.

Operates under the following schedule:
KL 677 AMS 15:30 - 16:20 YYC 135 789
KL 678 YYC 15:25 - 08:00+1 AMS 246 789

Aircraft will RON.

https://news.klm.com/covid-19-klm-starts-the-summer-schedule-with-57-destinations/

EDIT: Looks like BA pulled its schedule for next week, pushing resumption to end of April.

If you look at it from an AF/KL perspective, that organization will maintain some level of service to YYZ, YUL and YYC. (In the case of YUL, AF 3x weekly B77W to CDG)

Only YVR loses both those carriers.
