I just got back from Vietnam Friday night and if it's any solace, the Saigon Metro is 3 years behind schedule (even with design & construction help from Japan). I realize it's a fully grade separated system, but there are worse delays out there than those that plague the Valley Line.

COVID-19 update: Changes to transit
March 16, 2020

Today, Mayor Don Iveson and Interim City Manager Adam Laughlin announced changes in transit services in an attempt to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Effective Tuesday, March 17, transit services will be reduced across the city from normal weekday levels to Saturday service levels. If you are a frequent transit user, ETS is moving to the Saturday schedule seven days a week. Occasional transit users should keep checking takeets.com for online information about when and where to catch a ride. All school service routes will be cancelled.

“If we reduce the number of buses and LRT on our city streets, we can further increase the level of cleaning and disinfecting taking place on these critical services that Edmontonians rely on,” said Mayor Don Iveson, “Our number one priority is ensuring the safety of Edmontonians and City employees during these trying times.”

“We understand that this is a difficult time right now for Edmontonians,” said Adam Laughlin, Interim City Manager. “We are continuing to work closely with Alberta Health Services to understand how we can better ensure the safety of our operators and customers, while still providing a daily service that people rely on.”

There is no change to DATS service at this time and regular operation will continue.

The reduced service schedule will also allow ETS to better protect transit operators. All buses remaining in service will have bus shields, allowing more effective distancing for operators and for customers.

I’m so pissed right now. Two buses from downtown to 99 St and 76 Ave this morning instead of 1. Some people don’t have buses at all. They dropped the ball, it should’ve been reduced weekday service not Saturday service.

There is work that can't be done from home so they're forced to go on EI if they're shut down, and there is work that can be done at home but some of the employers are too backwards to allow it.

maybe they're health care professionals or work in grocery stores or drug stores or maybe they deliver services and supplies to health care establishments or grocery stores or drug stores?

maybe they're doing anything from being customs brokers to doing research and lab work? maybe they're 311 or 911 operators or emergency services personnel?

maybe they work for atco or epcor to make sure you have heat and light and water whether you're at work or at home?

maybe they're none of those things and should be at home unless they're getting a prescription filled or trying to get some groceries. maybe they're the next shift of transit workers driving or cleaning those buses?

we should all be doing what we can and some of that might just be to be a bit kinder overall and bit less judgmental overall (says me being judgmental… ).

The amount of friends I am hearing from that CAN work from home but their employer is making them show up is ridiculous. Adults don't need to be babysat, and if they do, then you shouldn't have hired them.
