I agree with you 100%. It's strange that a town that has such high demmand for hotels with low vacancy rates even in the dead of winter can't come up with a tougher design board. "If you want to build in our town these are the design guidelines you must follow".

Yes that is 1980's Toronto in the BG (Kids in the Hall)

Why? It looks sweet. Any non-offensive building that isn't just a rectangle is a win for Toronto.

It's garish and awkwardly squeezed in between its neighbors.

To be fair to this building, it's more the next door neighbours that are completely out of place and forcing it to look squashed. 19 Duncan is one of the biggest travesties of the Entertainment District.

I have no neighbourhood context (being from Vancouver, not Toronto) but the building itself isn't bad at all for infill! It is hard to tell from the rendering, but will the windows on the left be right beside the neighbouring tower?

The design is irrelevant. There's not enough separation. One less tower with this design isn't going to make a difference. There's a dozen more like it.

What is so bad with having towers so close together? Gives a Manhattan/ strong urban feel IMO.

For example this office proposal in Vancouver has come back alive this week, wedged between two existing buildings on a really narrow plot, looks great if you were to ask me.

That tower is integrated much better with its neighbours. It's larger, but it matches the setbacks and maintains a consistent street wall.

It's a great comparison to show the differences in quality we've come to expect out of Vancouver compared to Toronto.

Nothing as long as they are appropriately designed to wedge in. 217 Adelaide's hotel suites are millimetres from the lot line.

sufficient (not great by any means)

The latest news about 217 Adelaide is that it's office, with no hotel or residential component at all.

Not too far off - it's on Bathurst just south of Eglinton: https://goo.gl/maps/SFiJFdaamYQ6gEYT7

Again because I am quoting, I can be forgiven for stealing .

This is another proposal going to Surrey city council (a suburb of Vancouver). This area would be just north of Surrey Central Skytrain station.

110 Adelaide is yet another contextually supertall tower with 90% coverage yielding no setbacks. I guess it's well above 20 FSI.
