January numbers are out and they aren't pretty. Both domestic and international are down. I expect February could be similar.

https://www.yyc.com/en-us/media/factsfigures/passengerstatistics.aspx

Domestic: 881,941 -6%
Transborder: 279,058 +5%
International: 176,789 -4%
January total: 1,337,788 -3.63%

LH is returning to YYC from June 1 (via its Eurowings brand) 4x weekly

LH5452 FRA 09:50 - 11:55 YYC 332 1356
LH5453 YYC 13:45 - 07:20+1 FRA 332 1356

Curious if this could push DE out.

Excellent gain! Hopefully it doesn’t push Condor out however I do enjoy seeing them around.

Is this correct? Or is it 2x LHR and 1x LGW (too lazy to check)

I posted this on the YEG thread but am curious about your thoughts on the new addition?
1. LH doesn't have small enough aircraft like EW to fly this route. Too many business/first class seats on LH birds so enter EW.
2. LH will not cooperate with Condor anymore for low cost/leisure traffic hence they started their own AC Rouge type flight. Condor has been bought by LO recently.
3. Could this be an AC/LH ploy to squeeze WS leisure/VFR traffic out of YYC? Not sure.
4. Corona virus anyone. Asia traffic will be down this year so why not redeploy to North America-Europe although Italy isn't doing anyone in Europe any favors lately.

As an aside it will be curious to see how the YYC-FCO routing does based on recent news coming out of Italy.

If you look at all long-haul you can even throw NRT in there too.

12:55 NRT
13:45 FRA
15:05 AMS
17:05 FRA
18:15 FCO
19:30 CDG
19:50 LGW
20:10 LHR
22:20 LHR

----

Full international long-haul at a glance:

LHR - 14x Weekly (AC / BA)
FRA - 14x Weekly (AC / EW / DE)
LGW - 7x Weekly (WS)
NRT - 7x Weekly (AC)
CDG - 6x Weekly (WS)
DUB - 3x Weekly (WS)
FCO - 3x Weekly (WS)
PEK - 3x Weekly (HU)***
ZRH - 2x Weekly (WK)
Total Weekly Flights: 59 Weekly Flights
***Hainan is still scheduled but have doubts on them returning***

If the trend continues in Italy I wouldn't be surprised if the FCO-YYC gets outright suspended. the O&D for the route to begin with was small and relied heavily in connecting traffic and given what s going on I wouldn't be surprised if the market has shrunk dramatically. I know some of my family members are debating whether or no to cancel their trips to Italy in July given the situation.

Theres a few key reasons for why this route even happened so I'm going to share my perspective.

Yes the market for business travellers is very small but the tourism market for Germans visiting the Rockies, YYC and even Montana is HUGE, You can walk through Banff on any given day of they year and I would assure you there are almost as many German tourists as there are Chinese tourists. Germans (mainly between 30-60) LOVE to see unspoiled wilderness and things like that, hence why Condor operates flights too Whitehorse. The route is purely leisure based from the German side so of course they would shove EW on it instead of LH. Im sure from the Canadian side as well it is based to mainly attract people travelling to Europe for pleasure.

There is no possibility of AC/LH squeezing WS out of the YYC international market. If I'm AC in this situation and I'm watching WS take a strangle hold on the market why would I push them out? YYC is AC's smallest hub by a long shot so I would let them take what they want from the market and maintain and push what I have, Such as FRA. If WS is pushed from the international market at YYC they're going to go straight to their other 2 hubs (YYZ and YVR) with their brand new shine dream liners and begin to snatch up marketshare there.

AC and LH are both Star alliance members and one of the key reasons these alliances work is because it essentially forbids airlines from competing (In negative ways) with each other on routes where one airlines could financially hurt the other. Im sure there was talk between AC and LH before there happened to assure there was enough of a market to be able to handle both airlines and I wouldst be surprised of Condor still does alright on the route as well.

Speaking of COVID-19, looks like it's starting to take its toll on NRT, as AC has cut several flights in April. Was planned 6x weekly, and I'm seeing they've already trimmed it to 5, and wouldn't be surprised to see it further go down to 4 or even 3x weekly.

As for FCO, from what I can see advance bookings are very good and with May still being 2 months away a lot can change in that time frame. Too soon to speculate.

The COVID-19 is already impacting air travel to Europe. I was booked to attend MWC Barcelona this week. That conference brings in 80,000-100,000 each year. It was canceled over the COVID-19 fear. More and more major business events are going to go that way in Europe this year.

Rome also gets a lot of cruise ship traffic as it is a home port for a number of cruises. The CONVID-19 issue is having an impact on the cruse industry. I would not be surprised in WS was counting on connecting cruise traffic to help fill that flight.

All I was saying that it is too soon to speculate on a possible service suspension or reduction as its still over 2 months away from launching. There will definitely be a huge impact on the travel industry this year, and WS will probably get less bookings then they would have if there were no outbreak.

Honestly, I give it around 4-6 months before people stop freaking out over it.

No question about that. People cancelling trips left right and centre. Not just outbound travel but inbound as well. Just an overall massive hit that nobody could have predicted. These types of global events affect everybody. As the exposure spreads to different regions one can only assume we will start to see an impact to Europe as well. But definitely too early to tell. Without a doubt though bad timing for large increases in capacity.
