Quick question, I'm curious if anyone here knows what the largest unserved routes to/from (Into, TB and Dom) Calgary are?

Trans border I think it’s Boston or DC - the last time numbers were reported it was pretty low o&d though 35,000 a year or so. Domestic is a tough one. You’re getting into airports with barely any service but close hop regionals! Like Sudbury, Sherbrooke, Niagara Falls. International would probably be Hong Kong? Though I bet we get a Madrid flight first, for the same reason as the Rome flight - limited competition from only LA and San Francisco flights.

Boston O/D in 2018 was 49,129 which was a 33% increase over 2017. I wonder if it rose further in 2019.

DEL has higher O&D numbers compared to HKG, but I believe if we were to gain another destination in Asia it would be ICN.

https://www.anna.aero/2019/03/06/100-routes-asias-top-10-airports-non-stop-service/

DEL - 55,154 (YEG is 42,050)
HKG - 41,814
ICN - 34,950

Some new AC long haul changes:

AC009/010 - Appears to only be YYC-NRT-YYC now. Not seeing the YYZ tag at all?
AC850/851 - 77W now planned June 1 until early September replacing 333/789.

DEL has the good old friends and family problem with cost just mattering way more than travel time.

ICN for hub operations you thinking?

Ahh. I hadn’t realized someone was still releasing numbers - they used to be put out by transport Canada or statscan or the USA equivalent and I thought they had stopped!

Yes.

I think WS is interested in going after an expanded partnership with KE following an JV with KL/AF.

It's still probably a few years down the road, but I can eventually see summer seasonal YYC-ICN happening.

Might not be a large O&D route but is Dubai still being thrown around?

That was a political gift from the UAE to the Conservatives to try to pry open more landing spots elsewhere. It went nowhere.

I can also see WestJet further expanding their relationship with CI and making TPE their gateway to Southeast Asia.

The longer flight time to TPE means you need more than one airframe to have daily service with the same departure time each day, plus extra fuel for a similar fare. CI you have onward connections into SE Asia but onto the mainland is limited. Between the two ICN makes more sense imo.

If they only ever serve one destination in Asia, yes, ICN makes more sense. But if it's HKG vs TPE, I think TPE wins. And no, CI is not limited onto the mainland, they serve 32 cities in China.

Interesting thread from a blogger that has way more connections into the global airline business than what is publicly noted.
https://onemileatatime.com/hainan-airlines-end-near/?utm_source=BoardingArea&utm_medium=twitter

Adding to the discussion that YYC-PEK's days maybe numbered. Also Hainan has been playing the old 90s AC/CP game of chasing of chasing load factor and pax growth at the expense of profits. Eventually the day of reckoning will come.

Given that HU presently only has full fare C & Y class open for reservation for the entire summer season, I assume it won't be returning from it's hiatus.

CA might preform better as they have stronger connection opportunities on both sides?

I feel like the fear around the CoronaVirus really killed HU for us, I don't see us getting another Asian destination until both the virus and the Hong Kong protests get sorted out and I don't think that will be any time soon.

On another note, KLM in March has changed its equipment to all 789/772 replacing the 333/789 mix because of the China flights suspension.

Also once again, AC has made changes to LHR in April with the 77L replacing 788. Both of the AC Europe long-hauls will be operated on a 777 in the month of April now.

Is that a increase or decrease in seats?

Many of HU's long haul services are only showing full fare classes at the moment. Does make you wonder if the days are numbered for the airline...
