https://www.yyc.com/News/tabid/91/articl...de-18-millions-de-voyageurs-en-2019.aspx

Press release says YYC had 18 million travelers in 2019, but doesn't give specifics yet. Might get posted later today.

December / Year-end totals:

Domestic: 989,686 +0.4% (2019 total: 12,513,961 +2.27%)
Transborder: 286,718 +5.7% (2019 total: 3,527,257 +5.56%)
International: 164,622 -0.6% (2019 total: 1,916,562 +8.53%)
December total: 1,441,026 +1.3%

2019 complete total: 17,957,780 +3.54%

As expected, actually just fell short of 18 million.

Press release says "approximately 18 million guests", damn so close yet so far however a 3.54% in still very nice to see. Im sure if the max wasn't grounded we would have broken the 18m mark and judging from the current situation I think that it'll be the same this year as well.

also says that Cargo landings increased 6.6% to 4,305 this year so added bonus.

Great result for a rather shaky year in the aviation world, congrats!

Looks like HNL has survived WS' latest MAX update. Will operate 3x weekly non-stop for just the month of April on a 738.

If it could have been operated all along with a 738, why didn’t they do so all winter?

Because with the 738 it is weight restricted. If loads are low enough and yields high enough it can be worth it.

I also believe prevailing winds are stronger in the winter so potential range declines in winter months vs spring/summer.

Correct. The weather presenters like to call it "The Pineapple Express" which is large air mass that is heavily moisture laden. The Pineapple Express come from the Hawaii area and travel in NE direction toward YVR/PDX/SEA. Lots of headwinds make for a tough slog in the range restricted 738. The longer legs and less fuel burn on the max8 make it ideal for these conditions.

Record snow base at ski hills are the product of many Pineapple Express air masses rolling through. Judging from the ski conditions in Banff, i would say the WS network team got it right.

Looks like this only survived for just a week. In this week's update, all Alberta-Hawaii narrow body flying was removed in April.

Only YYC-OGG remains on a 789.

WS must be patting themselves on the back for not launching any Asian (more specifically China) service right about now.....

Given the ongoing issues with the MAX, I'm not at all surprised there isn't much there. However none of the changes listed in the press release are loaded or appearing in the reservation system. I'm wondering if they're now doing separate releases as I can't see only YYC getting love this year.

---
Some other changes:

AC LHR - 77W replaces 333/789 in June.

HU PEK - Only available in full fare C/Y class for entire summer season. I suspect this probably won't resume at all given the circumstances.

I really wish WestJet would start spelling Grande Prairie correctly in their press releases.

Today's WS schedule change included all the summer changes both mentioned in the press release and more. No new routes loaded, including the already announced YDQ.

YYC-SFO = 2x daily moves up to April 26 from mid-May
YYC-DEN = Op day changes. Now days: 1457.
YYC-IAH = Re-timed and includes flights timed to connect to TATL bank. On Mondays there's 3 flights inbound from IAH.

Didn't really dig through domestic other than the seasonal routes. YYT / YQG / YQB / YXY remain unchanged (other then being re-timed).

And YYC becomes their second largest base with 27 flights per week.... second to YYZ and just slightly more than their 3rd largest base at YVR.

On that note... any updates on the Flair v. WestJet predatory pricing case? Is it still happening?

Flair just announced that they are completely pulling out of Abbotsford which means the YYC-YXX route is ending. They stated in their press release on the matter that it was indeed because of Swoop. This also means the Swoop has now driven Flair out of YXX and YHM.

I believe so? Westjet (very obviously I might add) has been using Swoop to undercut Flair on markets to secondary airports like Abbotsford and Hamilton and they have driven them out of the Airports just straight up. Flair's seat pass was what I saw as their response to Swoops loonie seat sale, and their new Atlantic routes I see as a response to Swoops announcement on their Atlantic routes a few weeks back.

Was wondering about that as hadn’t heard anything since the end of April.
Perhaps they can use their latest press release as evidence?

One thing for certain is the term “hub” was so mis-used in Flair’s case.
