We need to do less, not more, to support cars.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I am happy to hear that with the Victoria Avenue beautification project and now Sask Drive having a possibility of renewal with investment in beatification, better walkable spaces and bike access that the city is finally investing in these sorts of elements on major roadways.

I just visited Burbank/Glendale in California and the amount of money into landscaping and making road/sidewalk areas look beautiful astounded me and was evident. Perhaps other cities have different guidelines regarding percentage of a development and roadways that has to be landscaping. I hope Regina will continue to do more of this, or plan to. It truly makes a difference. And yes people will protest in Regina and say that money should go elsewhere, but come on. We need to make the city look good. We need to make sure all sidewalks are in good shape and we need to have beauty inside the city outside of Wascana Centre.

I think yes downtown that is one thing to have beautiful "grand avenues" such as Victoria ave is awesome and Sask drive between albert and broad as well. Even more so, add in broad street and albert street that border downtown. I just think the city has an opportunity to add somewhat of an expressway into downtown with its redevelopment of Sask Drive.

A survey years ago asked residents what they wanted in the city that was missing and I don't remember percentages but I know an extension of ring road into downtown was high on that list.

A raised LRT link from the airport to stadium warehouse district, to downtown to Vic East ending at Costco would be amazing “Cornwall Centre. Cornwall Centre Station.”

Agreed. This would be excellent.

Building a highway into downtown is, without a doubt, the worst idea uttered in this thread.

Highways into downtowns are bad ideas. Better to encourage mass transit, and for greater housing density within downtown.

I fundamentally disagree with the idea of a sole expressway into the downtown. You want to destroy a downtown -- then construct a highway going into it, add sound barriers, and then lastly allow downtown land owners to convert downtown parcels into gravel parking lots.

That said, there is an opportunity here for an actual boulevard that separates local and through traffic. I know when people hear "boulevard" they think Rochdale or McCarthy - but these are just regular arterial roads -- not actual boulevard streets. At some point in time, developers realized that calling normal arterial streets boulevards made them sound fancier, and now every second street in North America is called a boulevard. Most people mistakenly think a street that has a median with trees is a boulevard -- it isn't. Real boulevards separate slow and fast moving traffic. When the City uses the term "grand boulevard" I don't even think they actually understand what a real boulevard street is. I'm pretty sure their engineers think that its just a standard arterial with trees added to it.

Converting the portion of Sask Drive between Elphinstone and Albert to an actual limited access boulevard street could kill two birds with one stone by allowing through traffic to pass by the area more safely and timely, while non-through traffic (including pedestrians/cyclists) would have greater access to local businesses and on street parking.

Thank you for explaining it better. No it does have to be a full highway but something like you said would even be a huge upgrade. Just have a great opportunity here and we should be open to all sorts of ideas

Completely 200% agree. Building freeways downtown has killed several neighborhoods and downtowns all across North America. There are documentaries you can find online that show this is flawed thinking.

Seriously they should build an LRT along Sask Drive.

I would love to see this, with a terminus at Pasqua Hospital/Evraz and another just past Chuka on Arcola. THis would work well with the boulevard idea with through traffic down the middle and traffic slowing measures and bike/pedestrian infrastructure on t he North and/or South Sides. Next, build one down the centre of Lewvan from roughly Rochdale to Gordon Road. Pipe dreams I know but would completely transform the city.

Haters gonna hate lol. Had a great 20 minute conversation with my city councillor representing my ward and re-assured me that all things will be considered on top of other things we chatted about that are on the city's radar. Exciting times and no an LRT to Cornwall is not one of them..sorryyyy but an urban planet is exactly what we want downtown

Wanting a highway into downtown is the pinnacle of small town thinking.

Building a highway into the downtown is an idea straight out of the 1960s/70s. First off, if the desired effect is to reduce traffic congestion/commute times, I can promise you that it will have the entirely opposite effect.

Furthermore, not building an expressway into the downtown is not "small town thinking" - literally the largest cities around North America and the world are opting to tear down their downtown expressways (see: Seattle, Seoul). Small town thinking would be to replicate the same mistakes other cities have made - instead of learning from them and understanding best practices.

Does anyone in here drive past the Sherwood Place office building (soon to be home to The Co-Operators)? If so, please take a look at the new black glass they have installed on the lower two floors. It appears that the mullions (if this is the correct term) are yellow. From what I could tell, this appears to be the finished colour, not a protective covering. It's different for sure. Let me know what you think.
