^except that most go grocery shopping twice a week with smaller loads.

Anyways, if I have a heavy load I either take transit or a short cab. Cheap, easy, quick.

I doubt you've ever taken a transit bus in your last 20 years. You've already stated that you'll only board LRT... and again - the same choices are available for the currents, you can walk there, transit, short cab rides, or drive yourself, like most do when having more than a few bags to trot back, and more personal attack, I seriously doubt you eat at home very often, as witnessed by your posts here and there.

Fact: Out here in the SW (south of the henday), I live closer to several groceries stores than most in Downtown, downtown or Oliver do.

but ya, suburbs bad, downtown good. I forgot where I was.

I wont forget the time my wife called me after her first grocery trip with the new born when we were living downtown.

There is no reasonable way to unload a half dozen grocery bags and deal with a car seat when you have an elevator trip in between. Leave the baby in the car and make a few trips hauling bags...bring the baby upstairs and go back to get bags...

Just one of the many things we overlooked when we thought you could raise kids downtown.

Grids are very costly and not very efficient.

You would likely see a 20% jump in lot costs if neighborhoods were built this way.

Plus more infrastructure = more long term maintenance costs.

all that for buses? mmm. nope.

people make do with all sorts of things all over the world out of necessity that aren't particularly good choices if there are better alternatives for them Coldrsx.

Certainly, but people can and do make it work just fine is what I am saying.

Folks with babies on our building simply use a small cart.

Precisely.

We are so incredibly fortunate to have a standard of living where we can avoid having to — it up and live with such inconveniences that are typical in other parts of the world.

Our big Christmas gift to the girls was one of those dual strollers. I wouldn't have been able to fit it in the door of the condo without emptying it, collapsing, and carrying it sideways. Neighbors would be pissed with the pile of cereal and crackers in the hallway that would fall out of it everytime we moved in in and out of the door. No idea where we would of stored it.

Do we need it. Nope.

Is it nice to have. absolutely.

More importantly, our 2 year old loves being able to sit next to her baby sister.

We all make choices, choose how to get around, how often we shop/how we shop, where we live and how we make be with or without kids.

Again and point being, many thousands of people in Edmonton live with kids in multi-storey buildings, take ETS and survive just fine.

Let alone other cities far more mature, developed, urban, dense cities around the world that do the same...willingly.

What is Edmonton to you?

To me it is an affordable mid-sized city that offers a variety of housing, lifestyle and amenity options.

That includes urban, suburban and acreage living.

Thousands? Well, lets recognize that the majority of those thousands are recent immigrants and single parent households with very limited options and other factors at play. Or in my case, those who foolishly thought they could squeeze out a couple more years.

The amount of people who are financially secure choosing to live with kids in multi story buildings? negligible.

perhaps curious but i wonder how representative anything conducted on twitter is going to be in a lifestyle issue/choice/preference as broad as this.

A city where having a house + yard should always be within reach of the majority of its citizens unless arbitrary civic government policies continue to make that more difficult.

What is Edmonton to me? A family friendly city with great neighbourboods, great variety of housing stock, decent high speed transit (that provides a real choice between driving or transit) between our many functional nodes, including downtown as the primary. A great health care and public education, a city that loves the outdoors for recreation and festivals, a city that realizes that no one part makes a whole.

So we can all agree, choice is good and all forms of housing/living are conducive to lifestyles we so choose.

Happy Friday.
