I'm sure you'd be thrilled to have a liquor store built next to your house.

When I think to myself... hmmm... what is Regina really missing... my answer isn't... oh yeah, we need more liquor stores, especially in Cathedral.

Homeless people don't loiter outside a bank or hairdresser.

Ultimately, loitering is up to the management team to prevent. Broad Street liquor was basically a homeless park. Circle K usually has 3 or 4 guys out front and can be hostile to customers. Petro, just two blocks south, has no loitering.

Cornwall aggressively deals with panhandlers. I suspect Sobeys will too. If your customers feel threatened they simply won't shop there.

Yes, because the thing we really want everyone driving to get is alcohol. Give me a break.

Huh? Is driving to a liquor store bad? My guess is 98% of all customers drive to their local liquor store. You could have 100 liquor stores in Regina and probably 98% will still drive since most people don't want to walk more than a block with their case of beer in hand.

As for Cathedral being liquor store deficient, put it in Safeway or on Albert Street. 13th Ave is a poor choice.

There is NOTHING on that empty lot. It is a perfect development right across from the grocery store.

A perfect development would be a four storey mixed use building with 3-5 CRUs and 25-30 apartments.

Yet that type of development was already denied for the cathedral area (which was absolutely a crap decision when you see what currently stands in its place across from Connaught with a Vape shop) if you don’t remember! Lmao

Are you trying to imply that non-white people are bad or something? I go to Golden Mile semi-regularly and it's 100% fine.

Who said anything about prohibition? If you are referring to my comment, you are barking up the wrong tree. I enjoy my fair share of alcohol.

I just don't believe 13th ave is the best spot for a bland Sobey's liquor store. The best part about 13th is that it has mostly stayed true to its roots of local and unique businesses. What I would hate to see is a transformation from what 13th is to what Whyte Ave in Edmonton and 17th in Calgary have become. (Whyte Ave lost all credibility when BP's opened on it)

I agree that a mixed use, condo development with small business options on the street level would have been nice for 13th Ave.

Tried that, morons objected.

Local businesses, as nice as they can be, are overrated. Terrible hours, no accountability, poor stock levels. And given that no local liquor stores offered to develop that lot I welcome Sobey's bringing walkable choice to the neighbourhood.

The real option would be to allow Safeway to just sell alcohol on the shelf like a civilized country, but that's never going to happen with the neo-prohibitionists around.

I agree. I have never been witness to any of that in all of the times I go to the Golden Mile, whether it's to buy groceries, go to a movie, or grab a bite to eat.

Cornwall Centre, well that's a different story.

I did not once say Golden Mile was the main problem area of the city (I work downtown so I also experience the issues there) nor did I say it’s a problem at all (I choose to live 3 blocks north of Golden Mile and frequent GoodLife Fitness in addition to shopping and eating at the mall). For the millionth time, I was making a point that liquor stores aren’t as much of an attractor of vagrancy as retail centers in general are (can’t believe I have to point this out). So please, when someone points out a fact or informed observation, please take a deep breath and consider that it may be your own racism coming out with your perception of their intentions.
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! I never accused you of anything. Don't lump me in with the others. My comment was agreeing to Rodo Regina Lover's comment. Have I ever accused you of anything? NO. Just calm down. My comment was that I have never seen any issues on the multiple times I frequent the GM. I never said that these sort of things never happen. They happen all around the city, and any city for that matter.

The ironic thing is BrutallyDishonest agrees with me that a liquor store is fine for 13th Ave. Fuck me tho for using a personal example to try and prove my point.
The question that nobody has asked is why does a liquor store need to go on 13th specifically? There are countless vacant lots on Albert just a couple blocks away, wouldn't that make more sense as it a more typical commercial street and you have more seperation from residences? And still provide access for Cathedral residents? And yes I realize that the current vacant lot is an eyesore, but I doubt an ugly building with a huge parking lot will be an improvement.

It's almost certainly better looking that 95% of 13th Ave and there are a grand total of 5 parking spots.

Meh not as much parking as I expected, concept isn't super clear. Will there be 13th Ave street access for parking or will the access be from Retallack? It would really suck to lose any frontage along 13th for parking but obviously not quite as bad if it's tucked behind

Obviously because Sobey’s is building it and all of their liquor locations are directly next to their Safeway stores.

The city is looking for feedback regarding ”practical and aesthetic“ improvements to Sask Drive, Albert St., and Broad St. planned to take place from 2023 to 2024.
Quote:
“It is intended that these streets transform into grand, tree-lined avenues edged by high quality buildings,” the plan states.

“With imagination and commitment, they can transform to places of vitality and value.”

The plan, which emphasizes Saskatchewan Drive’s function to be connecting various areas of the city by virtue of its location, envisions “broad sidewalks and double rows of trees” along both sides of most of the road.

The plan examines the “wide right-of-way west of Albert Street,” suggesting it could become a pedestrian promenade connecting Mosaic Stadium and Evraz Place.
The plan also talks about “temporary pocket parks” to the north as the area is developed (I assume this means along the north side of Sask Drive) and mentions a potential partnership with the casino to create a new park in front of the casino.

Regarding the bolded part: if this is something they go ahead with, the corner of Broad and Sask Dr might be a good location/opportunity for a large, interactive fountain. I’m not sure exactly how they would go about this. I imagine expanding the casino parkade and leaving the road/drop off lanes and removing the parking?

It's no surprise at all to see a box liquor store on 13th. If council approves tearing down a small community Safeway which was was one of the only buildings in the city with any historic architectural appeal and housed several locally owned business and a historically important mural, your idiot council will surely approve this.

You guys whine about the poor economy blah blah blah. The lamest excuse ever. It's about a lack of vision and residents not giving a shit.

I guess nobody told Saskatoon there was a an economic downturn. Case in point River Landing, Midtown redevelopment, thriving local businesses, ect. Time magazine recently named the new Calgary library as one of the best new buildings in the world, and Edmonton has just completed the tallest mixed use building west of Toronto.

Oh but hey, you got a stadium several years ago, so there's that. (just like pretty much every other CFL city).
You seem to have some anger issues. Yes, the economic downturn is responsible for the slowdown in Regina development. It hasn't stopped completely, but it has slowed. Different industries slow at different rates, so that is why some development continues in some places and not in others. As to why office towers are being built in Saskatoon and not Regina, that is easy - we already built our new tower with space (Hill III) during the boom, while Saskatoon did not. So Regina already has excess office space and does not need another tower, while Saskatoon does.

I came across a post on Twitter the other day that said the Bridge on the Devonian pathway is going to be replaced. Has anyone else heard anything about this? It's such an landmark, I can't imagine it changing.
