People have been pressing the button from the beginning, even though the trains have been in auto-door mode all along. If they quietly switched over to manual mode, I think people would catch on pretty quick.

Probably because some cars have two doors and others 1. The uneven spacing of doors make some area much more chilly than others.

Probably because they've spent the last 2 months screaming "DON'T TOUCH THE FUCKING DOORS". We had a whole bunch of major delays due to people holding doors open and doors jamming. So they had verbal announcements at every station saying don't touch the doors, and there were big signs at stations and on paper "Flyers" all over each train and all over the seats/handles and doors. I doubt they'd want to start saying "At terminus stations, start touching the doors"!

Here is what I believe would bring the best balance between energy efficiency and consistent messing (i.e. not confuse riders): year round, have doors at manual mode at all terminus stations and automatic at all line stations. Even low-ridership stations such as Cyrville and Iris.

If you start having "conditions" like an Excel sheet (if this, then that, but if that, than this, BUT, if this, then THAT), it'll be a nightmare.

But both Tunney’s Pasture and Blair are temporary termini, so practically, for now, doors will be automatic at all stations.

Although it would help (left/right announcement should for sure be implemented), I don't know how many people actually pay attention. Listening to music or podcasts, focused on their phones... And of course, those hard of hearing or deaf. You could always have a display board giving that same information, but the lack of attention issue still stands.

That really doesn't seem necessary. It's really not hard to figure out what side the platform is on when you're in the station.

Platform side announcements are normal on systems with differing platforms. People panic when there's a jammed train and they need to exit. They like to know which direction they're going to have to alight.

I was thinking about that. It could be as simple as modifying the text that is diaplayed on the Next Stop Announcements inside the train to display a directional arrow towards the doors that will open.

E.g.

Next Stop: Bayview >>

I sit in the same spot every time when it's available to be sat in, and the variation is definitely from vehicle to vehicle.

Not if the "condition" is between DATE and DATE, doors are on manual.

A good chunk of the transit-riding population is already familiar with the concept from the Bitte Drücken days on the old O-Train, and most of the rest of the population has already tried the placebo buttons on the Alstoms to see what would happen.

The "Don't touch the doors" message, as usual, was a case of mission creep. (See also how "we need to replace the Albert/Slater transitway failure" became "we're building the train to get rid of every bus within a five-km radius of the Peace Tower")

They would need to do both for people who are visually impaired.

I like the way the Montreal Metro has threshold lights that change white to green to indicate which doors are opening, and then to red to warn of imminent closure.

Does anybody know why they reduced the speed of entry/departure in stations ? Took 3 trains today and they were all entering and exiting stations very slowly (slower then usual that's for sure)!
My bet is that they set the trains like that to prevent weels from skipping over the rails. Ice, snow and cold my alterate breaking conditions of the train.

This might get complicated by the fact that the screens are only in one direction on the train, so sometimes on a forward moving train, the screens are behind you. Instead of the Cyrville arrow ALWAYS pointing to the left, it would have to point to the right based on the direction the train is pointed in.

The new C-Train rolling stock has that as well (6 minute mark). In fact, the new "MASK" trains have many cool features that can be seen in this video.

Ottawa chose to purchase the bare-bones Alstom Citadis Spirit for our "Chevrolet" system, to quote the Mayor, avoiding the cost of adding features that would have improved rider experience. According to the Transit Committee presentation on December 18, it seems the middle poles near the doors were "options" that cost us $1 million dollars. Strap hangers were also quoted at $1 million. Manconi seemed to suggest the City decided at the time to buy after-market instead (the ones currently being installed cost $200,000) however, I have a feeling the City made the decision to skip them completely until they started receiving complaints from passengers after the Line opened.
