Minority here, I support CANZUK. It makes sense that countries with a similar/shared history, language and culture and similar standard of living work closely together.

You sure seem to sometimes, though. Gotta admit.

Well this was a fun remind of why I logged off. See you all next week when I have more free time than I know what to do with!

No, not at all.

I just don't subscribe to nor abide by the zeitgeist that suggests it never should be discussed under any circumstances.

OK but I am still not sure it makes sense to include them simply because they are headed up by the Queen (perhaps as a feather-in-the-cap to prove that CANZUK isn't racist or at least westernist? )

If I were to expand a hypothetical CANZUK I'd make it SACANZUK and include South Africa. It would certainly be the most different of the club but still has a fairly high degree of compatibility economically and in terms of societal organization, culture, etc.

If we're going to do anything we should join the Nordic Council. We could throw our 37 million-person weight around while learning about things like trains and how a sense of national development doesn't make you North Korea.

That would be even more "suspicious" to some than CANZUK is!

Where do I sign up? Probably finally be able to order beer from all the Nordic breweries that only ship within the area, too.

And yes, South Africa has a lot more in common with us than most of the other countries where the Queen is technically head of state.

CANZUK sounds to me like some kind of random, awkward and unexpected corporate merger done on the recommendation of a bunch of numbers guys in an office tower somewhere. It doesn't make sense and it seems like a bad idea. But hey, it might allow me to retire comfortably in a nice Queensland beach town, so on that basis I'm 100% for it.

And can all you guys going nuts over this conversation fodder topic as some kind of white supremacist conspiracy just go to twitter where that kind of thinking is encouraged?

Stuff like CANZUK is quite appealling to the globalist crowd, so the very idea of people expressing doubts about its virtuousness is highly controversial, and anathemic.

As a former full-patch paid member of the globalist crowd (and still a part-time member, believe it or not) I fully get the reaction.

Right which completely invalidates the racist angle.

Not everything is racist however.

I view CANZUK as more a partnership of equals, with significant cultural similarities.

Integrating Canada and Australia could be done with little fuss. Integrating Nigeria on the other hand is another kettle of fish entirely. It's like the problems we've had integrating Mexico into the free trade agreement. Canada and the US were relatively simple, but Mexico was palpably culturally dissimilar with completely different labour standards.

I would personally be in favour of a slightly expanded CANZUK, including South Africa and the eligible Caribbean and South Atlantic and South Pacific islands. Other former Commonwealth nations could be included as they become more acceptable on issues dealing with democracy and labour standards......

South Africa would be good except for whats going on there currently. I think many in North America are ill informed of the crashing plane that is the current South Africa. But I think one number makes it obvious, its unemployment rate: 29%. (Canada's is 5.83%, Venezula's is 44%). South Africa has gone too far left and thats created a welfare state where the majority oppress the minority, causing the minority to flee which of course leads to an enlarging majority on the dole which pushes them to go further left to maintain the dole which puts more pressure on the minority to flee. South Africa is in a worse situation than Mexico and most Central/South American nations.

The problem with democracy is that once you either go too far left you reach an endless cycle of increasing taxes and unemployment where the unemployed dictate your policies which push more people towards unemployment. Of course if you go too far towards capitalism you get corruption and corporations/wealthy dictating your nation. A balance needs to be maintained.

My mom and dad left South Africa in the 60's, at that time it was just hop on a ship and come to Canada since it was a fellow commonwealth country.

My cousin is trying to leave South Africa now, she says it's unbearable there. They were looking at Australia but now looking more to Canada. She and my other cousin were denied a Canadian visitor Visa two Christmases ago, very expensive process to get rejected just to visit.

I find the CANZUK states are generally among the best at getting this balance right.

I love that CANZUK is the term. Come on. It'd definitely be UKAUNZCA or UKAUCANZ.

Sorry to hear this. I do support a focus on allowing people fleeing SA in over us allowing in people fleeing the Middle East and travel should be much easier.. It is a tad ridiculous that we treat people from SA like their strangers.

One of our greatest mistakes was allowing the commonwealth nations who used to be close to diverge. We should be supporting SA through the turmoil they are now going through. While part of it is because of their own democratic choices that doesn't mean we shouldn't help.

Honestly if corporations gain absolute control the people can still rise up or rebel. But who fights once the people gain control? Thats why a delicate balance needs to be maintained.

The situation varies wildly on who you talk to but for everyone who wants to leave it’ seems just as easy to find people who are determined to stay or those who have moved back after things weren’t as rosy overseas as they anticipated. There’s a lot of optimism with the current government after the setbacks suffered under zuma with state capture, ESKOM mismanagement and all that. Things on the ground are different from what you read online, naturally.

I have no time to expand on this now but the issue isn’t leftism, and those terms in the North American context aren’t particularly useful. Unemployment is a huge issue and has been for well over 20 years. Very much exacerbated by external factors including a massive influx of economic migrants from other parts of sub Saharan Africa. I actually expect good things in 2020 (shared by many I know there).

I mean practically speaking Canada and USA could have free movement pretty easily given how integrated the countries are. But 90% of Canada's identity is based on proving to ourselves and others how we're different from America. So our political and cultural establishment wouldn't allow it.

Yes! As a Canadian living in Norway, I love this idea. So many similarities and differences where one region could learn from the other.
Or SCANZUK - Scandinavia + CANZUK? I'm not even sure UK would belong in this group anymore though. Maybe just SCANZ
