I don't know how people can argue free market then block every single infrastructure project in Canada and put in enough regulations to kill our local market. We had companies who wanted to build pipelines, nuclear power plants, etc. which all got blocked/cancelled. BC LNG actually had a few more projects that pulled out.

Honestly America or China should just invade and take us over now, we obviously can't take care of ourselves.

You really don't realise how stupid you sound, do you? This is the level of ridiculousness you have to drop to, to justify absurd pro oil policies. Please explain how we would be held hostage by 'foreign oil suppliers'? How would they conquer the West's navies and control the Atlantic, so that oil tankers can't reach eastern Canada?

Dude, think before you post. How would it be cut? FFS, all they have to do is stop shipping it to us. Move by rail? We don't have enough capacity to do that and what makes you think we'd being producing enough under your scenario? Until there's a reliable and as useful source as oil it's special. Why do you want to risk our way of life? Importing oil isn't cheaper anyway. You're paying world price for that oil. Where's the subsidizing coming from? Sounds like you love dirty dictator oil. Why is that?

Holy fuck! I sound stupid? You're beyond naive when it comes to understanding world markets and geopolitics.

Milo doesn't understand free markets and I totally agree that America should take us over.

Can you please learn how markets work? You're making a complete fool of yourself.

If 'they' stopped shipping to Canada specifically (why?), then we'll just buy it from another friendly country, like the UK, or Norway, or the USA or whoever else, while this unfriendly country sells to someone else. If it turns out there is literally no one we can buy oil from, then hooray, we're in a world war, and you've had to use a completely absurd scenario to justify your expensive, protectionist policies.

The fact that you keep stating that a world war is the only thing we need to worry about shows your utter ignorance on how things work and that you have zero historical knowledge on this matter. I would explain things to you but I have serious doubts that you would understand.

Please, do try. Describe a situation where it would be impossible for eastern Canada to get oil, and why you believe this to be such a big deal. Sure there are situations where oil would be more expensive, but it would be more expensive everywhere in the world. We coped fine when oil was $150/barrel.

If your definition of being a successful country is not importing any oil, then I'm afraid you will be disappointed. The USA imported 9 million barrels a day of oil last year (mostly from Canada!), while also exporting. Exactly the same as what Canada does. So please tell me, why is it bad for Canada to import oil, but not America?

No, you're acting like we should shape our national policy around 0.001% scenarios. Meanwhile ignoring things like climate change.

While reading this thread was wondering if we were going to bring up things like climate change? Any thoughts on this?

I'd much prefer Britain if we have to be taken over. Same form of government and head of state.

Nobody is going to take us over.

The fact that Corndogger thinks that Washington would be more responsive to Alberta's temper tantrums than Ottawa has been is absolutely hilarious. But I suppose that's the new party line in Putin's troll factory so he dutifully obeys.

Didn't that happen quite a while back?

Though I'm totally unsurprised he thinks China should take us over.

I'm beginning to believe a Western Alien Nation does exist, and it's called Alberta.

As a 4G Albertan who is a card carry New Democrat, I can tell you it's even more specific. It's a Tea Party/Alt-right ring wing alienation from reality. I call it the "Million Moron March" after the 1 million or so citizens who voted UCP in the last election knowing full well their leader is crook who rigged his own nomination for leadership. Enough said. I don't engage with them anymore as there is no point.
