Well turns out somewhat soon was over two months later, glad it's finally public. This news is massive, far FAR bigger than their first investment which was announced with Trudeau in attendance. I thought for sure this would be announced as part of the election, would have been a huge boost to Justin in Metro Van.

And yes their workforce will see a HUGE boost, like I said a few years ago, Amazons plans for Vancouver are massive, well over 10,000 employees.

This isn't the last announcement either.

i would rather it all stay AAA office space as we need that more. Vancouver has lots of over priced crap condos, but not enough high paying jobs to boost the economy.

as for the height, i would be curious to see what designs would look like with less restrictive policies; it may have looked quite nice.

This brings Amazon's total to over 1.5 million square feet in downtown Vancouver, and they are looking for more space already.

Assuming a headcount of about 125 SF per person, pretty standard in a tech office, it signals space for about 12,000 employees.

Given that this is office space not warehouse, the majority will be 6 figure jobs too which is great.

I think Vancouverites have a lack of understanding of just how transformative of an announcement this is.

The scale is unprecedented (for us), and the increase in high paying jobs is going to have a massive impact on the local economy.

Combine this with announcements from MSoft, Kabam, and others, the changes coming will be palpable.

I should also say, not all necessarily good, demand on housing, services, and the amount of displacement coming is going to be shocking.

We wont be hearing about the issues for 3 or 4 years, but they're coming.

Seems as if Vancouver won Amazon’s contest by default without selling itself short.

Do you guys assume they'll keep all their existing offices or consolidate some of the spaces?

The jib cranes were almost forming a Christmas tree shape as viewed from 12th & Cambie this morning! That one rebel had lowered by the time I got into position for a decent shot.

They are keeping everything they have, except their temp offices in WeWork.

They are actually looking for more space already, so stay tuned!

Wouldn't that be problem solved for them to consolidate if the two office towers were to be built much higher than they are now? That is another reason why this City has no foresight. Should have gotten rid of Viewcones long time ago.

I’m almost curious if they would/could make use of the large floor plates and eventually add a section in between the two office towers to connect the two and form one massive floor plate.

Yeah, if you look at the construction update website they are installing new glass. I doubt they'll ever build between the two towers. It would be too disruptive to make any sense unless everyone temporarily vacates.

Well, they could build a center tower first, and then connect the 3 towers together with the direct construction area walled off.

There would be some reason you wouldn't want that though (sunlight), and so instead of having 1 large floorplate, there might be 3 connected at the intended hallways, which should be a lot less disruptive for the existing offices.

Building on top of existing structures and still having the current tenants stay is done all the time. The issue I would imagine would be that the bottom has a lot of retail.

Not going to happen.
If you look at the construction pics, the elevator cores go right through the old building. There is no tower sitting on top of the old building.
To "fill the gap" you would have to excavate all the way down through the old building to support it, and there are new pieces of infrastructure like the circular parking ramp in the way.

That's a very good reason why the way they're building it now is the way it'll be for a very long time. It's a welded steel frame. If you're in the area now, the noise levels from the site would tell you why Amazon and the retail tenants wouldn't take kindly to any subsequent messing with the building.

If the idea had been pursued to make a bigger new structure, it could have created a pretty unpleasant work space. The converted office space in the old Eatons/Sears retail building on Granville needed two lightwells cut through the structure to give the inner offices some access to natural light.
