Proposed rezoning for 17-storey residential tower in Oliver

https://www.edmonton.ca/residential_neighbourhoods/LDA19-0327_Urban_Design_Brief.pdf

October 9, 2019

Edmontonians are invited to a drop-in public engagement session about the proposed rezoning of property at the northeast corner of 102 Avenue NW and 121 Street NW.

Date: Wednesday, October 16
Time: 6 – 8 p.m. (drop-in, no scheduled presentation)
Location: Robertson-Wesley United Church, Memorial Room, 10209 123 Street NW

Work has really been progressing on the University of Alberta's Dentistry/Pharmacy Building. The 1946 addition is gone, and the 1960's tower at the rear is nearly finished;

Likewise, work is slowly moving along at the 1893 Land Titles Building downtown. Part of the annex has been stripped of all its brick. It seems as though their trying to fix the wall. Its not really noticeable in my picture, but it looks like it had developed a pretty serious inward slope;

And a photo of the beached battleship;

Is that the back side of the dentistry building coming down? I hope they don't touch the front, I quite liked it.

What is going up in its place? I haven't seen any reference to the project.

Yup, it's the later wings being demolished. The original 1920 portion of the building fronting 89th Avenue is being restored. The University is trying to centralize all its various administration offices into it. This is what'll be going up;

Apparently, "Buildings previously slated for demolition, like the old administration building, will get a second look to see if they can be repurposed, Sharman said, in a move that could further reduce its deferred maintenance bill that is hovering around $950 million," according to this 2017 article.

I rather like the way Quad is "encased" in the core of campus. Hope the admin building does not go down.

And re: Pharmacy, cool!! Did not know that was happening. Classes in the building demolished were some of the dungiest.

so the city issued a stop work order for the downtown market. Apparently they did not have the proper permits to do the needed work.

Station Pointe has been taken over by RMS, sounds like they will be re-starting construction soon. They are the ones who took over the BCM project on 105 ave when it was just a basement with a failing wall. I think that one’s just about done now.

Proposed rezoning in Garneau for a residential tower

October 16, 2019

Edmontonians are invited to a drop-in engagement session to learn more about the proposed rezoning of properties on the south side of 86 Avenue NW between 110 and 111 Streets NW.

Date: Tuesday, October 22
Time: 6 – 8 p.m. (drop-in, no scheduled presentation)
Location: St John's Institute, 11024 82 Avenue NW

The proposed rezoning would allow for the development of an approximately 28-storey residential tower with townhouses fronting 86 Avenue NW. An amendment to the Garneau Area Redevelopment Plan would be required to allow the proposed rezoning, as current plan policy does not support development of this intensity at this location.

The engagement session will be an opportunity to learn more about the proposal and share your views with the City and the applicant. Feedback will be summarized in a report to City Council when the proposed rezoning goes to a future Public Hearing for a decision.

Isn't there already a 'Station Lands': Qualico's lands and EPCOR Tower? You think they would come up with a different name.

New lighting illuminates history of Rossdale Power Plant

October 17, 2019

Today marks the 18th anniversary of the provincial historic designation of the Rossdale Power Plant. A new lighting installation that highlights the architecture and history of the structure and the start of the River Crossing area’s revitalization will be illuminated tonight at 7:03 p.m.

The power plant will be lit by 35 light stands in its mezzanine floor windows and 28 lights on the smoke stacks.

“It’s wonderful to use lighting to highlight the beauty of this historic industrial structure,” said Erik Backstrom, Senior Planner, Planning Initiatives. “The Rossdale Power Plant is a landmark in Edmonton’s River Valley. It powered Edmonton’s economic development for decades, and will be a key spark to bring new life to the area through the River Crossing initiative.”

The project cost $200,000, with $180,000 coming from a $3.2 million power plant stabilization project, and $20,000 funded by a grant from the City’s Lighting Heritage Buildings Pilot Program, an initiative of Edmonton's WinterCity Strategy. The lights were installed by EPCOR.

“The river crossing has been a gathering place for 10,000 years,” said Geoff Wagner, Senior Manager, Project Development. “The new, decorative lighting system continues this celebration of our past, and creates excitement for what the building and the site can become in the future.”

The power plant was built in phases between the 1930s and the 1950s and decommissioned between 2011-2012. On October 17, 2001, as a result of the efforts of organizations such the Rossdale Community League and ConCerv, a group that advocated for the preservation of the plant, three buildings at the Rossdale Power Plant were designated as Provincial Historic Resources, protecting them for future generations.

The plant is widely recognized as an important part of our city’s history.The City of Edmonton envisions the River Crossing area becoming a significant destination for Edmontonians and visitors, and an attractive community for thousands of residents.
