Yeah need 2 frames for YVR-SIN at minimum, vs 1 for YYC-NRT or YVR-LHR.

2 noteworthy things to look at with AC9/10 at the moment:

-Unless I'm missing something, its presently the only thru flight left for S20. From 28MAR-30APR its only loaded as YYC-NRT, but from 01MAY the YYZ tag resumes.

-Now the only mainline 763 route left.

The 788 is the perfect sized aircraft for the route, but I have a feeling though they'll just keep it on the 767 for as long they can.

One frame could theoretically be used for a 3 weekly service but I still doubt this is part of the short term plan.

AC is temporarily putting an 333 on YYC-OGG in Jan 2020. Frequency stays the same at 4x weekly.

Keep in mind AC is replacing all of the 763s with 333s in the second hand market. But this aircraft is a fair bit larger, so question is, do the economics still work?

The economics don't work but there is nothing else for the widebody aircraft to do (during the winter season) that is economical.

The ideal aircraft for AC to deploy is the max8. However because of the grounding and associated loss of flying public confidence, the max8 is not right aircraft from a revenue perspective for </= daily routes.

When the 737max gets its return to service, to regain the public confidence and make the aircraft profitable will require there be a readily available alternative. So the max8 AC aircraft should be deployed on YYC-YYZ and YYC-YVR runs at every second departure. This will allow for a back up plan should any pax not want to fly the max.

YYC-OGG on the max8 might return for the 21/22 flying season if there are no more hull loss events.

The MAX is going to Hawaii; I was actually more talking about YYC-NRT on a 788 or 333. It used to be a 788/789, so I don't see why not.

788 is the best equipment for YYC-NRT.

The 333 has slightly higher costs than 788/789 on missions over 5000 miles and YYC-NRT is right on the border.

However the 789 and 333 puts too many seats on Western Canada to NRT/Japan. Too save mega dollars or to use an upgrade, Vancouverites would do YVR-YYC-NRT. What limits this practice is the 187 economy seat 24 business seat configuration on the 763. Pop another 80 seats out of YYC and YVR yields will decrease.

However AC maybe willing to forgo break even or small loss on YYC-NRT to keep the market going until WS enters Transpac market. WS might look unfavourably at YVR-Japan or YVR-Asia because they would be the 3rd or 4th player in the market. Better to be the second player in a market that is not considered core to the incumbent. This could cause WS to enter YYC-NRT before YVR-TransPac. Under this scenario AC withdraws as WS enters the YYC-NRT market in order to defend the AC Asia hub in YVR.

I always figured if WS is going to Japan from YYC they'd do YYC-HND, as that's where DL is, and AC doesn't fly there from YVR (NH does though). That, and I think HND will open slots soon.

Otherwise, I figured they'd do YYC-ICN and JV with KE.

Japan allocated 50 slot pairs for daytime flights into HND last month. Canada didn’t get any.

Not sure if schedule update is completed, but seems like there won't be any European routes from TS out of YYC next summer. All that's left are 4x weekly each to YYZ and YUL.

It appears that way. WestJet has killed off Transat out of YYC and YVR reduced to only 9'weekly flights to Europe next summer (3 LGW, 3 MAN, 3 AMS).

KLM flip flops equipment again... back to a daily 333 next summer.

Edit: TS is going to be 9 weekly.

TS is not done with schedule yet. YVR-AMS is 1x weekly and AMS-YVR is 3x. So YVR may get a few more weekly once schedule is done. Things do not look good for YYC though, as there is no domestic 332 flights to YYC anymore.

AMS is downgauging to a 332 1-2x a week in the spring before returning to 333 daily. Guessing this is due to increased pressure from WS bringing on CDG in March.

TS exiting YYC is not a surprise - it's basically going to be ACr Part Deux, which means it will shift to YUL/YYZ and some flights out of YVR. It's always been a bit player in YYC anyway; I don't see this as a bad thing as it will strengthen WS who offers a better product anyway.

Could this have anything to do with Thomas Cook going under? My understanding is that they swap equipment during summer and winter, good chance they may not be getting the frames they need to do YYC - LGW.

No. All the A330s are in house at Transat for the busy summer season. They only leased A330s to European carriers in the winter.

The Thomas cook deal was mostly for narrow bodies for TS in the winter. Not uncommon to see several A330s sitting idle at YUL during daytime hours in the winter. Not enough takers.

Surprisingly TS at one point not many years ago wasn’t a bit player. At one point they had 10 weekly flights from YYC to Europe (LGW, MAN, GLA, AMS, CDG, FRA and MUC) In the last 5 years or so they have been gradually stripping away flights in Western Canada and will have a very minimal service next summer out of YVR only.

The difference at least in YVR was the introduction of a daily 737 to Toronto for onward connections. They were more point to point in the past.

Did YYC pickup a domestic connection to either Montreal or Toronto?

Over the last few summers TS has been feeding its YUL base with flights from YYC/YVR to YUL. Same goes for YYZ.

Good September numbers.

Overall: +3.3%
Domestic: +0.5%
Transborder: +8.0% (should exceed 3.5 million this year)
International: +17.3% (closing in on 2 million!)

If Q4 can achieve growth of around 2.5% we will hit 18 million this year.
