Restaurants, cycling shop to be acquired for Highway 417 bridge project

Jon Willing, Ottawa Citizen
Updated: October 2, 2019

A Greek on Wheels outlet, Royal Oak pub and a cycling shop, all near the Rideau Canal, are some of the businesses whose properties could be gobbled up by bridge projects on Highway 417.

Officials from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation on Wednesday briefed the City of Ottawa’s transportation committee on the planned highway bridge replacements in four areas of the core, between Metcalfe and Main streets. There are seven bridge structures that stretch between that area.

Five of the “rigid frame” bridge structures are being eyed for rapid replacement. The bridges are at Metcalfe Street, Elgin Street and Main Street. Each rigid frame structure will require three-day weekend closures of the highway as workers swap out the old bridges for the new ones.

MTO believes it will need 3 Hawthorne Ave. (Greek on Wheels), 221 Echo Dr. (Royal Oak) and 5 Hawthorne Ave. (Cyco’s Cycling Shop) for the bridge replacement over the Rideau Canal.

MTO is also acquiring the property at 58 Main St., currently home to Organic Salon, and 60 Main St., home to Gordon and McGovern Construction. The agency plans to use the adjacent Ballantyne Park during construction.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024-2025.

Wow, they're going to wipe out the majority of the remaining buildings on the north side of Hawthorne between Colonel By Drive and Main Street. Shame.

And we’ve thought that taking out properties for highways in big cities is a thing of the past.

It is as if the Confederation Line was built to no use. (I mean, it’s supposed to make people ditch cars, provided the connecting bus services aren’t 🞵🞵🞵🞵.)

They're not expropriating those to widen the highway, they're doing so to allow for staging room to replace the 50+ year old bridge over the canal.

Still, I feel as though they could have found another location that didn't require expropriation. I would have at least like to see the other options that were ruled out.

What about the area bounded by Elgin, Catherine, & Queen Eliabeth? They could even temporarily shut down Catherine and Queen Elizabeth and I still think that would be a better outcome than demolishing those buildings and destroying the character of Hawthorne.

They still probably would have to expropriate the 2 buildings on Main to replace the Main Street bridges though.

Yeah, I think it was a decision to have a single construction site rather than two large construction sites within 200m of eachother.

NOTE: they don't say the canal bridge will be replaced 'rapidly'. What's the plan for the canal bridge?

Family bike shop will likely be bulldozed for Queensway bridge repairs

Tom Spears, Ottawa Citizen
Updated: October 3, 2019

They’re planning to flatten Gord Martin’s bike shop so that cars and trucks can drive across town. Gotta be an irony in there somewhere.

Martin has owned and run Cyco’s on Hawthorne Avenue a few steps east of the Pretoria Bridge for 23 years.

The first he heard of the plan to flatten his shop was when a stranger walked into the shop on Wednesday and told him it was a done deal. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation needs Cyco’s and two businesses beside it, the Royal Oak and a Greek on Wheels outlet, to build a replacement for the Queensway bridge over the Rideau Canal.

The ministry says in an email that the plan is not finalized, but it briefed city councillors about it this week and has called it their preferred option.

No one has yet contacted Martin, though he notes that “there were whispers that they would have to do something about these bridges eventually.”

“It’s horrible. We’ve been here for 23 years and we are part of this neighbourhood. Our business is built for where we are right now,” he said. The shop rents and sharpens skates in winter and has a large base of regulars for bicycle tuning and repairs.

“We would have to start from scratch somewhere else,” he said. “It will be the end of our business.”

There’s also his investment to consider. “This is a very expensive industry. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are sitting in this store,” including his current retail stock of approximately 100 bicycles, but also specialized tools and many, many parts. The shop covers three floors.

“We are a full-service shop. We rent bikes, we fix bikes, we sell bikes.” With rentals for canal skating nearby and some work in ski tuning, “we really have two seasons.”

“It’s taking away retirement (plans). Even if I wanted to sell the business, I can’t. They have just nullified the business. For me, this is a very scary time.”

He had to go home and tell his wife, who runs a day care from their home. No one slept much Wednesday night.

He said he will fight the expropriation if officials don’t “play friendly … Hopefully they will do the right thing. They’re going to take my livelihood away and everything I’ve worked for.”

Dave Moody has worked in the store since 2008 and hoped to go on to manage it some day.

“I love that it’s a family business. I’m a friend of the family,” he said. “I’ve always been in retail and customer service, and I enjoy dealing with people every day. And I like the mechanical side about it too when I tune up bikes and work on bikes. It’s fun.”

He was repairing a tiny purple bicycle as he talked.

Bikes are not all alike, he said. “Every bike is different and unique in terms of what parts and components are on it. The older the bikes, the trickier they are.”

MTO is also acquiring the properties at 58 Main St., currently home to Organic Salon, and 60 Main St., home to Gordon and McGovern Construction. The bridge builders will use the adjacent Ballantyne Park during construction.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024-25.

Staff at Greek on Wheels and the Royal Oak didn’t want to be interviewed.

“Those three business are among the most-used businesses in our community,” said Phyllis Odenbach Sutton, president of the Old Ottawa East Community Association. “They will be a really big loss.”

She said the ministry has said there are alternatives to taking this land, but those are worse — for instance, taking over the field at Immaculata High School.

“They keep telling us there is no other reasonable alternative, but once you lose those small businesses, they’re gone.”

On Thursday Martin was diagnosing a chain that keeps slipping on one bike, and showing a customer how they welded a weak point in his frame.

One year ago a tornado missed the Martin family’s log home in Dunrobin by a whisker, and he felt pretty lucky. Now his business will probably be demolished instead.

So typical of Ottawa. In the midst of a climate crisis, we're gonna destroy more urban neighbourhoods and a bike shop to make more room for cars

IMO, the entire Queensway between Parkdale and Vanier should be buried. Might even make it feasible to build that tunnel to the MC bridge. And before you say it's too expensive, both Boston and Seattle buried their freeways.

So where is the money for it then?

The city/MTO is using that space to stage the building of a replacement bridge. This is not to widen the highway.

Boston is a terrible example. Their highway tunnel cost over $24B - which is ridiculously too expensive for Ottawa - and took 15 years to complete.

Even if Ottawa/Ontario had that kind of money for transportation projects, there are way better ways that could be spent.

Is this twitter? Are the inmates running the asylum? Are dissenting views really sniffed out by 🞵🞵🞵🞵 hurt moderators? So sad when you’re first instinct upon being offended is to campaign for others to be muted. Bye.

I'm not happy about these buildings being on the chopping block for the bridge replacement however, their our few alternatives. The traditional bridge replacement methods would stall traffic for months or years to come, which would increase carbon emissions. The only other spot with enough space would be the intersection of Pretoria and Queen Elizabeth if we demolish the TD Bank.

If you look back at their (your?) previous posts, while some were constructive, others were rude and disrespectful. We don’t have to agree but we should at least respectful of others on this forum. I don’t know, but my guess is it was the name calling that got them in trouble.

For reference, "Tete Carre" and "Square head" were accounts created by a user that's been banned probably 20+ times for creating multiple accounts and trolling.

That I know lol. I’m just wondering how moderators know that multiple accounts belong to the same person. (K Tête Carrée and Square Head, this one’s obvious, but what about other ones?)

=========

Back to topic. Would the shops be relocated? If yes, where? Also isn’t Confederation Line supposed to take away some of the traffic? Or do we need to wait for it to stretch from Trim to Palladium to see the effect?

Or does 50% ~ 75% of people living in Ottawa simply need a car for work (i.e. plumbers, painters, sales, you name them)?
