One thing I will say I don't think their categories match the "norms" for how Canadians think of temperatures. For example they say 7 C is "very cold", while 29 C is "warm" and not "hot". It's too bad there aren't visualizations like this coded according to the temperature. You could also do overlays of this, showing the relative change in mean temperature at a given time between two locations.

I completely agree with the general point that on SSP Canada people tend to blow the relatively minor climactic differences out of proportion. Southern Canada has only a narrow band in the range of overall climates you see around the world in even major cities. If we talked about say Singapore, which is hotter than any Canadian city year-round, it would be a huge outlier.

I didn't pay much attention to the Victoria location to be honest, but yeah I thought it was weird that it didn't show any yellow.

Well, we live in a cold country. We need to embrace our 3-4 months of hot/warm/comfortable weather I guess.

Personally I generally agree with their temperature scale. I consider warm to start in the low 20s (22-24) with some humidity and in the mid 20s (24-26) when dry.

What? Uh, no. What counts during summer is how many days you have above 24. Obviously. Summer is about heat and warmth. It's not "comfortable" sitting on a beach when it's 20 degrees.

-2C in Jan here is both "freezing" and "balmy"; it's not cold let alone very cold.

"Frigid" would be a better description for the category beyond "very cold".

People in this thread get quite ridiculous at times, any little thing to latch onto to prove your climate is better than another somewhere else lol.

Looks like we should get back up to seasonal for the weekend, hope to be able to get out to the mountains on the MTB again! also one month till the Banff Ski Hills open! gotta love late fall in the mountains, some valleys you can do summer sports still, and some are full on winter sports already.

You must be pretty unhappy with Canadian weather then.

For me, anything above about +10 is pretty good and I don't mind some freezing temperatures or snow in the winter.

It's 15 here today and I'm debating when to stop wearing shorts. Probably November.

I went to the beach in March this year when it was maybe 17 and sunny. Not warm enough to swim comfortably but very nice on the sand and it has somewhat busy. My ideal hot summer day is about 25 degrees, and I would only want a few weeks of that per year.

Sometimes I wonder if some people make themselves less happy with the temperature by coddling themselves too much. Instead of just going for a walk in a t-shirt when it's 15 and sunny they get bundled up and don't adapt to the changing season. People from places like Hong Kong do this a lot in Vancouver.

Pretty much every city not yet on the freeze list not named Vancouver or Victoria is on freeze alert either tonight or tomorrow. Some cities have predicted lows of 2-3 degrees, but with clear skies it doesn't take much for a localized cool spot at the airport to do you in.

I don't think Ottawa will escape the freeze tomorrow night. Toronto and Montreal might escape it by a hair.

Oh well. Whenever we think about moving we find that we can't. I've also been thinking, for a while, about how our contemporary culture bombards us with messages about how you're supposedly a loser (or at least a sucker) if you don't live in a climate that has tropical weather year-round.

The ambient culture these days is very tropico-normative, and IMO tends to seriously downplay the negatives associated with many of these places and their climates.

BTW I am not trying to bash on them. I do like warm weather and love visiting tropical places. I just don't think they're perfect, and am also trying to provide some balance to the discussion.

I think many Canadians would say they are OK with the spring/summer/fall in Canada.

But I think generally Canadians do despise our long winters - sure the odd winter day is fun - but not cold for months on end. Can't argue we don't either - Canadians are on record spending thousands by the millions to escape to nicer climes from late November thru March. Just check your local airports winter sun detisnations south.
