Sounds like a moving target. They we're always pretty adamant about 15 up until now.

We still have a month and a half to make adjustments and get ALL trains ready4rail.

A journalist was saying that they did not open the doors, but no clarity on whether the stops were just as long or shorter.

Jeff Leiper just asked about 15 trains.

Manconi's answer was that they have demonstrated 15 trains, and 15 trians was the forecast of what was required at the start of the project, but ridership has gone down so now 13 trains are all that will be needed.

Doing some quick math, if the end to end time is actually 21 minutes, and you assume a 2 minute dwell time at each end, it works out as follows:

End to end			21	min

turn around time		2	min

Total round trip		46	min

trips per hour per train	1.30	

Number of trains		13	

Total trips per hour		16.96	

Train Capacity			600	people

Total Capacity			10,174	PPHPD

A bit shy of the 10,700 promised, but not too far off.

Maconi's a little flip-floppy on this one. On the one hand, he says 15 trains was never in the contract, and then he says ridership has gone down, so we don't need 15 trains.

If the line is faster than originally promised (we've heard a lot of 24-25 minutes, not 21), then we're pretty close to achieving the capacity stated in the contract, as per Roger above. But if we can only achieve 13 because the other trains are not "ready for prime-time", then we don't have functional spares. Before the 12 days started, Manconi was always crystal clear that we needed to see 15. Hard to buy his explanations.

Is 21 minutes going to be the norm in real operations? We can hope. The faster the trains will be, the better the customer experience.

The city really needs a win on this to demonstrate that the $2.1B was worth spending. If we can move people to and from downtown faster despite the transfer penalty, then we will see a real benefit. Hopefully, we will see the end of the ridership slump but they have to get the bus connections right as well. That will be equally important.

I am out of town that weekend so I will miss the excitement. I look forward to giving it a try. Being a south ender, I will check out both the Bayview and Hurdman connections.

As fate would have it, that's the one weekend I'm back in Ottawa since leaving in June

The irony of it all, is that I will be escaping Ottawa by rail for an extended weekend and leaving the day before launch. Ottawa will be different when I get back. On return, maybe I should just dump my bags in my vehicle at the VIA station and give it a whirl.

At one point Route 97 was going to be extended to the VIA Station, which would have been a nice feature for us southenders. I presume that got canned somewhere along the way.

Same here, I'm out of town that weekend, so am trying to figure out when I'll first ride it.

Otherwise, I'm just looking forward to it.

I must say, half the fun of these things is the hype and talking about it on these boards. I'll be happy to transition to discussion of Stage 2, once we're all used to Stage 1. But for now, the idea of underground stations in Ottawa - those public spaces I enjoy so much in other cities - is exciting.

Indeed. The video (much higher quality and a tighter shot) is coming in the next few hours.

The doors did not open. And the stops were all the same at about 15 seconds each.

An end to end video from today’s ride is coming shortly as well.
