I mean, comfort clothes in public is not entirely an American thing. If you go to India or Pakistan you'll see men wearing Kurta Pajamas. Granted they cover your body and can often look quite nice, but in the end they are still pajamas.

Yea, that's true the ancient Greeks and Romans wore togas and sandals. It's just a white sheet wrapped around your body and flip flops lol. Greece and Southern Italy have warm sunny climates, so it was practical. Or the robes people wear in the Arabian peninsula are pretty much like togas I think.
