Interesting. I haven't been to the Yaletown location but I suspect this will be walkable for me. Can't wait! Tacofino's Mt. Pleasant location is nice, but feels a bit spendy.

I also would say interesting given the Yaletown space looks like it had quite a bit of design work done to it. Looking forward to seeing what they come up in Mount Pleasant, it's a solid place to eat especially before a game.

That's pretty cool. People love to — on McDonald's, but they absolutely know how and when to try things. They have no fear of experimenting, or cutting bad ideas.

Tokyo’s Afuri Ramen + Dumpling opening first Canadian location in Metro Vancouver

By Lindsay William-Ross - July 8, 2019

A Japanese ramen shop known for their “chicken broth” style of the popular noodle soup will have their first Canadian location here in Metro Vancouver, as Afuri Ramen + Dumpling preps to open in Richmond.

The ramen shop has moved into the space vacated by Dazzling Cafe at 140 – 7971 Alderbridge Way. The Taiwanese “brick toast” restaurant had been incredibly popular at the outset, but failed to sustain in the space, closing for a lengthy renovation in late 2018 before ultimately packing it in for good this spring.

Afuri Ramen + Dumpling is named for Mt. Afuri, “on the east edge of the Tanzawa mountains in Kanagawa prefecture,” according to the business.

The ramen shop has some pretty ambitious goals for what their ramen means to the world and their customers:

“We like to think we’re bringing sacred Mt. Afuri to the rest of the world. The mountain provides us with a kind of philosophy. It can be a little tricky to translate it literally from Japanese, but let’s just call it ‘Higher.’ We push higher in everything we do—everything, from pickling to serving—and we intend to reach for excellence as long as we are AFURI. Mt. Afuri remains—straight, honest, steadfast, dependable. That’s our aim. One ramen. One staff. Always higher.”

Afuri came stateside in 2016, opening in Portland, Oregon. In addition to the Richmond location here in Canada, the chain is adding a location in Cupertino, California.

Interesting article on the legal battles between Earls/Joeys and Cactus Club:

Restaurant war shatters 3 decades of peace between Cactus Club and Earls
Legal battle inevitable in 'prime-time soap opera' of Vancouver's dining dynasties, expert says

Along that line, the old Joeys at Broadway and Granville now has a "Leased" sign up.

LOL, what a circus. Maybe they can invite the Donnelly Group and destroy everybody involved.

Right. Restaurant Row. Did it turn out anything like Yaletown like they were saying it would?

Another restaurant at 338 Powell St. (east of Main) is getting close to opening - called Harken Coffee.

Slowly businesses are opening up along this character rich stretch of Powell Street, even though there hasn't been any residential development. There are some recently renovated retail spaces in the fantastic looking New World Hotel building on the corner of Powell and Dunlevy that I hope will see some interesting tenants soon. That area has huge potential. With these businesses moving in, maybe developers will see it as a signal to start building some new residential.

We wont see development there under the current zoning we've touched on this before. The economics don't make sense, they will have to allow market units and that won't happen under this council either.

What is it, 40% market rental allowed? So that's not quite true what you're saying. Along Hastings there is allowable density up to 7 FSR and less social housing requirements, so the economics are definitely good there, and not much has been much happening there either.

Have developers been buying property in the Oppenheimer zone? That would be a good indicator of how much interest there is.

As much as I love all the heritage buildings and and while dormant now, it could be a fantastic district. I unfortunately do not have the confidence you have in the area.

It's not getting better with more people living on the street than ever. With the attitude of the homeless being 'we don't trust the police but we want security' and 'we want toilets and running water and cleanliness but we don't want the city to get involved in our alternative lifestyle'. It's all — and i'm done feeling sorry. I'm getting close to moving to Vancouver island and give up on this. Between the opioid epidemic and the complacency to let it be the neighborhood norm and groups like the Kitsilano residents association getting it's 1%er nose into every other neighborhoods' business, this place is becoming miserable to live.

Shooting highlights safety concerns at Oppenheimer Park homeless camp: VPD

Vancouver police say a shooting late Wednesday night raises concerns about a growing safety issue at Oppenheimer Park in the Downtown Eastside, where dozens of homeless people are living in a tent community.

A 31-year-old man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and according to Sgt. Jason Robillard, no arrests have been made. The victim was found right next to the park and police say the suspect fled through the encampment.

Robillard said officers who patrol the area have noticed an increase in safety issues. He said patrols through the park now include at least four officers.

"They're noticing a sense of increase of violence," he said. "We had an officer that was assaulted recently, this shooting, the calls for [police] service, the general atmosphere in the park, the health and safety conditions there — we're just feeling that it's not getting any better."

Rachel "Teeth" Nielsen spends time at the park every day, occasionally sleeping there. She says the people who live there feel that the officers often pose the greatest threat to their safety.

"There's not a safety issue other than them, really," said Nielsen. "[The police are] not scared. They come here in giant groups even, but that's just to scare us."

People living at the camp acknowledged there have been recent violent incidents, including Wednesday's shooting and a recent attack involving a machete. But more than one person said the incidents aren't widespread and only affect the individuals involved.

Nielsen said the biggest safety issues she notices are discarded syringes on the ground and not enough toilets.

****She thinks the increase in calls is a result of gentrification, with people moving to the neighbourhood that aren't familiar with the open drug use.****

But for police, there's more to the issue, and it's been getting worse.

****what in the actual — is she talking about, I doubt any tax payers in the neighborhood (new or old family roots to the neighborhood, part of a minority or straight whitey, rich or poor) would agree to a neighborhood plan based on open drug use and leaving dangerous needles everywhere as it is spreading to every adjacent neighborhood! thinking this is normal will only amplify the problem.****

I now regularly find uncapped used needles on the staircase behind my building where people take their dogs up and down, sooner or later there will be an accident.

That's a likely candidate...but maybe CRAFT? Either way, it's a gold mine in the making if done right.

We're seeing non-market projects happening on Powell Street. There's a 55-unit project for Chinese seniors planned on the 400 block, and there's a new application (this week) on the same block for a 5-storey building with 12 non-market units over a Taoist library and Taoist worship and study area. MPA have proposed a 20 unit building on the 100 block. There are bigger buildings like the one already under construction at Dunlevy, nearby. The lower land values that make non-market possible are presumably because market stratas aren't allowed. There's always an interesting debate about whether concentrating more non-market housing in this area is a good, or bad idea, but economically (and in terms of not having NIMBYs screaming) it makes sense. Whether the residents will use a fancy coffee shop is debateable - even the large police contingent in the area might not use it, but the lawyers might, and there is supposed to be a new tech business incubator opening soon in the former police station at Main and Cordova.

Look at all those empty retail units on Powell/Princess. I wouldn't bet on anything happening down there either.
