That's going to cause a hell of a mess at some major intersections, if they're digging out into the streets. At least with the Canada Line it was just Cambie affected.

No. The trolley overhead infrastructure will remain in place so that TransLink can reroute trolley services in the event of an accident or other disruption to the normal routing, and for flexibility to adjust routes if customer needs or behaviours change as needed in the future.
https://engage.gov.bc.ca/broadwaysubway/faq/
There would be a cost to tearing down the wires so it is probably more than just keeping them in there (which would then allow them to be used for trolley shuffling/rerouting, possible future 12th service)

IIRC the Canada seriously messed up King Ed/41st/49th too. Such is life.

Put up a sign on the bus stop that says "rerouted to 12th?" Works just fine whenever there's a marathon or parade.

A new cafe is opening in that new building at Oak and Broadway in the spot that was a possible skytrain entrance. So that eliminates that spot.

Hopefully they deck over the excavation pit so traffic can still pass over top.

Here's what's being done for the Crosstown in Toronto (which is bored tunnel but open excavation for stations.

Do you know how long the lease is that the cafe signed?

i thought when that new building (now IA finance i think) was first proposed, there were plans to have a station entrance on the corner, but until it was needed the space would be used as a CRU for a few years.

plans were later changed to making provision for only an emerg exit (assuming the station entrance was located somewhere else nearby) -speculation here was the old bank site across the street would be the station entrance

an emerg exit stairwell and the exit doors to the street will take up less space in the building, so i'm not surprised if most of the space formerly planned to be used for a station entrace is now a long-term CRU tenant

I actually think the 14 is going to be diverted to 4th Ave. Same route as 4/7 along 4th before turning along Macdonald to get back along Broadway.

The 16 will be diverted along 12th to Arbutus.

Only 80% Relatively sure about these. But this way you limit the number of times these routes have to cross Broadway where there is active construction.

i think i read somewhere they (CoV?) wanted to use decking to keep the streets and sidewalks free-flowing (as best as possible) during rush-hours and the in-between daytime during station construction.

traffic lanes overnight could be reduced to 1 lane each direction when access to the pit under the decking is need.

just imagine if that pic was a preview of a two-lane broadway snaking for 50 blocks around cut n cover tunnels and stations during construction. and a two-lane cambie thrown in for an extra level of hell.

ugh

i used to work near hastings & carrall in the 'tinsletown' building and noticed the s.b. trolly wires on carrall one day, but never saw a trolly actually use them. i guess its cheaper to leave em rather than take em down

Anyone know which buses went on Carrall?

This report on the Carrall Street greenway mentions the trolley lines being relocated when they redid it in the early 2000s.

if i read this right, new trolley wires were strung during this greenway project, but since then (for decades) they've never been used?

Some buses used them when Main/Hastings was blocked off in June 2008

Likely the same reason wires are still on the Hemlock ramp to the Granville St. Bridge.

If they ban all street parking on Broadway, 12th and even 16th for the duration of construction, I think we'll survive.

I seem to recall that too.

I think they'd still need to have an open excavation for the initial excavation, then when it gets deep enough for workable headroom, they can deck over the pit.

I remember in the 1980s when Granville Station was built, there was heavy timber decking on Seymour over the ticket hall excavation, but otherwise the traffic flowed over top.

The Oak station entrance is going to be closer to Laurel St. Hence the name change. I think Translink bought a property there.

Also, Broadway-City Hall doesn't seem like it will have additional above ground station entrances. There will likely just be the underground connection to the existing Canada line station.

not quite.

every street or avenue crossing cambie was either blocked for thru-traffic (its hard to jump an open trench), or had the bailey-bridges installed on the major intersections, which f*d most of the left-hand turns. use of the bridges also meant fewer traffic lanes all day & night, so there was horrible e- and w-bound traffic jams all day.

my office-mates who needed to cross cambie by car or bus learned to add 15-20 minutes to their commute or general running around

what about the former lululemon space that was intended for a future broadway line entrance?

i want to know when Crossroads will have its station entrance connected to the new line. it is a natural idea since, you know, it was built for that...
