Good Day.

Semi-temp, semi-perm.

The main Belfast storage shed can now hold 66 current 4-module 48-meter LRV.

The quonset tent (southeast corner) can hold 2 more, and the the other four will either be still in assembly, or stashed inside the new LMF bldg. (northeast corner) and/or the LMF side of the main Maint bldg., until the Moodie site gets up-and-running.

When in final post-phase2 operation, the trains will essentially be split between the two Facilities, with possibly 2 to 4 overnighted at Algonquin (an operational supposition and possibility - it keeps getting batted back-and-forth). That assumes the stated number of 34 at the Moodie storage shed with 4 tracks. (?? some numbers do not add up here - <shrug> no surprise.)

These numbers are all on current LRV levels of 72 total vehicles at 4 modules per vehicle (48 meters). This allows a growth of 28 more 4-module vehicles to a total of 100.
If and when we expand the LRVs to 5 modules, adding 11 meters per LRV, to 59 meters per LRV, all the numbers change.

For instance, at Belfast, the sheds are now, 9 tracks at 300 meters for 54 4-mod LRV , and 3 tracks at 200 meters for 12 4-mod LRV. Total 66.
Change this up, and the sheds could hold, 9 tracks at 300 meters for 45 5-mod LRV, and 3 tracks at 200 meters with some wasted length for 9 5-mod LRV. Total 54.
Now supposedly when Phase 3 comes along, Moodie LMSF can be expanded, whether to hold more and/or longer LRV is always an open question. We never know.
Possibilities, possibilities, endless possibilities.

EnJoy.

I'm not too worried about longer trains. With the current configuration, we could go up to 18,000 phpd. That's Expo Line volumes (one way). We should be fine for the next 20 years.

They could even increase capacity to 24,000 phpd with the current configuration if they expanded the fleet and increased frequency to a minute and a half, though it might be cheaper to expand the trains and platforms. We also don't want to give people the best frequency possible and then take it away.

When it does happen, it could be tough to adapt Belfast unless they build new sheds on the Pepsi Site. Luckily, they have plenty of space to expand Moodie Yards.

I wonder if they might build a third yard for Confederation at some point in time?

Good Day.

Yep.
Moodie is supposed to have space in the plans for at approximately doubling storage capacity in Phase 3.
And although furthur expropriation for Belfast is indeed theoretically possible, as I mentioned elsewhere,
PepsiCo is a formidable opponent who seems to wish to retain their plant unless the terms are VERY beneficial.
And an expanded configuration would be rather awkward, but possible.
Overall, I think that the final Moodie would provide sufficient storage capacity, unless future considerations change extensively. IMO.

EnJoy.

I'd love to see longer trains and higher frequencies instead of twinned trains. Higher frequencies vastly improve the user experience. Would also make 1:1 service more feasible on branch lines.

Preparatory work for the cut and cover tunnel is beginning this week.

http://kitchissippiward.ca/content/lrt-s...rt-next-week-between-cleary-and-dominion

The first phase (from now until June) involves site clearing (trees and such).

According to the construction phasing plan, construction between Cleary and New Orchard (where it goes under the Byron Park) should also start this year. Construction west of New Orchard doesn't start until 2020 and construction between Dominion and Tunney's not until 2021. (I imagine to delay the closure of the Westboro and Dominion stations to as late as possible).

That and it needs less work than the sections that need tunneling, so there is no need to start any sooner.

If they're going to rebuild the Moodie overpass, I really hope they put in a fully segregated bike path on the eastern side of the bridge. It is not a pleasant experience biking on that bridge.

It's going to look very different when driving down the 417 or Corkstown over the Moodie Hill. It's going from trees and greenspace to a trainyard!

While busing to Kanata today, I was wondering what they would do about the road crossing after Bayshore on the way to Moodie. Will they build an at grade crossing or make the road pass under the tracks ?

Also after Dominion how are they going to make trains pass on the way to Cleary ? Will they take a portion of the Sir John A. MacDonald Parkway or complitely rebuild Dominion Station ?

The O-Train will pass over Moodie to the south of the existing at-grade intersection. That intersection will still be needed for bus access to Bayshore station.

Based on geoOttawa, the eastbound lane of SJAM will be realigned.

Good Day.

Yep. It's part of the trade-off negotiated with NCC.... SJAM parkway between Dominion and Cleary gets re-aligned (and straightened) with the LRT being buried underneath the eastbound lanes. NCC gets more riverside parkland expansion in their re-naturalization project on the north side of the westbound lanes. Both sets of lanes are moved more to the south side of the linear Ottawa River Park. MUPS, pathways, and access paths are re-aligned and expanded.

Sightlines for parkway drivers and Skead St. NIMBYs are preserved with the nasty rails and catenary and trains out of sight, for a hefty pricetag of full burial, instead of the partial burial and bermed RoW with 'windows' looking out of the half-tunnel out over the river, with the MUP on top of the half-tunnel.

All this after the NIMBYs on Richmond Rd and MCKellar Park screamed about loosing the eastern part of the Byron dogwalk park and the -unsightly- buried crossing of Rochester Field to get to Richmond/Byron for a better routing in the first place - but that ship has left port.

<sigh>

You mean Holly Acres, not Moodie.

I liked the City's second attempt at the route with the shallow tunnel and "windows" to the river. I never understood why that was not satisfactory for the NCC. How is the new routing any better?

I wonder if they should rethink this plan in light of flooding on the Ottawa River!

Yet another reason why the City's version was better; the line was farther from the river and the tunnel shallower.

That only works if the water level stays below the bottom of the windows. If the water level rose above them, the tunnel would almost instantly flood, with no hope of pumping the water out until the water receded below them.

With a "sealed" tunnel, even if the water level rises above the top of the tunnel, you can still keep it relatively dry (dry enough to keep trains running normally) as long as you can pump the water out faster than the leaks let the water in (no tunnel is completely free from leaks).

I liked the look of the windows, but this could have been a problem with them.
