PHX? WS has been flying YYC-PHX year-round for years.

Its due to the Max 8 grounding. The temporary suspension was announced a week or so ago.

Be careful posting while “buzzed.” Ha ha.

The SEA and PDX cuts were before the MAX grounding or WS jumping on PDX.

The downgauges in LAX and EWR and the PHX chop are related to MAX.

I wonder how the Onex sale will impact WS operations at YYC. They've really invested this past few years in new routes. I have a love-hate relationship - on the one hand, YYC is on the way to becoming a fortress hub for WestJet, on the other hand, they will bring routes to YYC not possible on other carriers due to using YYC as their largest hub. Will we see more capacity shift to YYZ?

Unlikely. This is about nothing more than who owns the shares.

Onex is an investment holding company. Their office location has nothing to do with where or how their companies operate. They want nothing more than a profitable airline. They didn’t buy it to transform it into a Toronto-based airline, or to get into the weeds of planning routes or hubs.

If Onex plans is to flip the company in five years they are going to be less likely to invest in things associated with long term value. I think it is still an open question if they will continue to support WestJet expanding in every direction.

Would have to look in greater detail, but two examples I know of, Cineplex they took a nearly bankrupt company and flipped it in 8-9 years. For Brightspring Health they grew a company for 14 years then sold it.

Pumping (building up debt in a subsidiary to fund payments to the parent company) and dumping (selling a company that has way too much debt to get it off your books) doesn't work nearly as well under modern accounting rules, especially when the owner is publicly traded, which ONEX is.

WestJet will actually adopt a much more long term outlook under Onex. As a public equity, WestJet is required to report quarterly, which promotes short term thinking in order to support the stock valuation. With WestJet being private, there will be a considerable decrease in transparency in their operations and finances. This will be a competitive challenge for Air Canada, as public records will no longer be available on their main competition.

Another interesting take on this WestJet deal has to do with the Delta codeshare. It has been pointed out that Delta has a history of taking equity stakes in its’ codeshare partners. Onex would be in a position to spin 49% (maximum foreign ownership allowed) of its WestJet investment to Delta in a couple of years time. There may be an understanding between Onex and Delta on this that is effectively reducing risk to Onex.

Interesting point you make.

When Onex tried to take over and merge Air Canada and Canadian back in 1999, it was backed by AA, so for Delta to be involved would make some sense.

Looks like WS is extending PDX to year round.

Also it appears like they’re adding 789 service to OGG 2x weekly.

HNL got swapped to a 7M8, 3x weekly.

Well, that explains partially where the 789 will be used in winter. I'm guessing they will shift a frame to YYZ for LGW? PDX year-round; wonder how long AC will keep that route now. Was 2x daily in summer, now 1x daily. Fortress hub YYC!

Yup, they also scheduled the 789 1x daily on YYZ-LGW in the same schedule update. Looks like YYC-LGW also got increased to 4x weekly.

Checked a few days in winter - this is exactly what's happened - 789s are running LGW from YYZ.
