For so long it seemed the hope on these forums was simply more downtown residents. That proposed project certainly accomplishes that task (yes, west of downtown, but very close). I think it's great. Obviously not a show stopper, but highly functional it seems.

Absolutely amazing what they are doing with these buildings. Pollard company is kicking 🞵🞵🞵 financially so perhaps we can look forward to more.

^ I'd really like to see the lot next door as well as the building next to that (Winnipeg Hotel I believe) redeveloped next. That and then the other side of main. Imagine the whole block Earls is on redeveloped into some nice infill projects with good street level interaction! Fortune block is a terrific start but there has to be continued momentum

....curious. From todays WFP

"Small section of Portage Avenue East to close Sunday 05/9/2019 9:37 AM

The westbound lanes of Portage Avenue East between Main Street and Westbrook Street will be closed for crane work between 7 a.m. and noon this coming Sunday, May 12.

Pedestrians will still be able to access the area just east of Portage and Main, but drivers should seek alternate routes, according to a press release from the city."

Could this be a crane for the Hyatt construction project or for some HVAC work on an existing building? Strange they mention WB lanes, There is nothing there but the Tetra Tech Building.

I agree. I'd love to see a strip of small live music clubs along that strip, to go along with the Blues themed Times Changed club. I'd personally like to see a small Jazz club, or Folk club, or maybe a place for people to learn music? Just tossing ideas out here, folks.

Could it have something to do with the Richardson plaza works? If it's in the Wb lanes.

I’d imagine the closure is for losing new supports and pavers into the Richardson plaza.

I can’t find the photo again on IG, but they built a huge deck on the roof of the Fortune Block. I also believe the Times Changed is expanding backward into the old Sign Source building (as opposed to wider), so I’m curious if the rooftop patio is for Times Changed, to be accessed by the new stairwell and elevator built in the lane.

The report on food deserts when first released was incomplete and now it is out of date. When it first came out, it didn't include the Sobey's in Ft. Richmond ( fair enough, hadn't been built), but also didn't include the Marketplace in St. Norbert. It seemed like the only stores they really considered were national level chains.

Well this is interesting, Manitoba sees the largest percentage increase (20%) in YoY spending on construction.

Maybe we're finally reaching critical mass?

re: Good Street development - the minutes have now been published and the three applications (subdivision, rezoning and variance) were all approved by City Centre Community Committee. It moves on to the Standing Policy Committee next.

March looks good but I think it's been pretty sluggish the last few months.

I watched the entire hairpulling discussion for Good Street on video the next day, and a good chunk of the previous presentations with the endless moaning from retired neighbours who think multifamily homes will bring the apocalypse.

Some of those councillors are a bit . It really looked like the project might get adjourned yet again until the last minute.

On the other hand human nature dictates that most people who come to make a presentation at civic forums probably have an axe to grind about something and are looking for a public platform on which to say it.

I'm sure it might get incredibly tiresome to have to sit and listen to the type of presentation you have described quietly and respectfully when I'm sure some councillors would just like to tell some of their presenters to stop their petty whining and get a life.

However, I'm afraid after a while I might start to wonder is down was up and backwards was actually forwards if I heard enough of that from one presenter after another!

It was entirely about parking. Developer states it's impossible to build fully underground and wanted a variance for 5 feet above grade, councillors and urban planning division insisted it must be.

Despite best efforts it got approved with a 5+ main floor height above grade, with a blank wall concealing parking for the 400 ft. length of the building (1/3 the length of the block) against the public sidewalk. I say 5+ ft. because their elevation shows 5 ft. but also shows 10 steps, which generally equates to 6.8 ft. Either way, that's the height of pedestrians against a blank wall for 1/3 of the block. Did think the development as a whole could be good but recommended conditions limiting main floor height. Supported a huge density variance and big parking variance provided they supply 1:1 bike parking. But they did not excavate deeper in order to lower the main floor close to grade as was requested.

The Committee was at first split but in the end did not take the recommendation of max 3.3 ft. above grade. We need stronger design guidelines in this city!

Viking all the reports (planning department analysis and recommendations), hearing proceedings and decisions are on the City's Decision Making Information System. http://clkapps.winnipeg.ca/dmis/
