I want to be optimistic. But reading those posts in Reddit was disappointing.
Air traffic systems also work through bugs, because they have them as well... The difference being that the public doesn't have access to such activities like we do with an urban rail system. BTW, every single system has their problems to solve, and these problems are identifiable when the trains are rolled out. Why are you losing your shit?

I'm pretty optimistic about the project's progress. If there were so many major switching issues, would they be moving to all doubles? Wouldn't they fix the switching problems first?

Without more details on the nature of the issues, doesn't really seem out of the ordinary from an engineering point of view.
But they've had some trains running on the tracks in the east end for two years now, and the entire guideway was finished a year ago, so there shouldn't be switching issues now.

Maybe the doubles cause the switching problems? I can't think of how that would happen, but I'm not a railway engineer.

They managed to have 20 trains running at once (all singles though) and they're only now having problems with significantly fewer trains? Either the doubles caused something, or a new problem popped up while they were working on it.

In reading some comments about CNS/ATM systems (and even airborne systems for that matter) and the assumed quality thereof, I think the general public would be shocked to learn how bug-free they aren't.

I'm not saying it's right and I actually make a living trying to make these things better, but it's obvious people have higher expectations of these systems (rightly so) than what is actually accepted for operational use.

Having spent the better part of my professional career in Telecom and Aerospace... I'm absolutely astounded that telephones work and planes fly

Telephones work

They use to with the old fashioned, tried and true telephone lines, but with the new "Voip" or whatever it's called, it doesn't work so well. A few times a year, we lose phones at work or have major issues. We got one at home and we have to dial twice anytime we try to call someone and it doesn't ring when people try to call us.

Yeah, Friday at lunch is terrible timing. Any idea what they plan to do? Remove the fencing around Rideau station?

I'm actually glad to see what appears to be full blown system tests going on with what appears to be a day-to-day start of the 12 day test.

At this time I'm keeping my optimistic hat on... hopefully the next few days/weeks are the final turning point.
There's a meme we use in the software world.

I'd be much more worried if there were no glitches in these final operational tests.

I certainly have to admit I know things aren't working when i don't see a steady stream of exceptions in the logs I monitor

At least from the outside looking in, it looked like things were running smoothly today whenever I went by

Yeah.

In general it's just nice to see the whole mix of transportation modes in the city. From my building I can see cars on the highway, cyclists, all kinds of buses, and both LRT lines coming and going. It's starting to look like a real city!

Thank you. This is my point.

Not saying they are bug free. But to the point of impairing a handover weeks before? Not likely.

I will concede that I am basing my concerns off the rumours from that reddit poster. And maybe that operator doesn't have the full picture.

So, while we wait for any significant news, can you all share why you're so into this?

I've long tried to articulate why I love transit so much: from bus to LRT to metros and planes, I love it all. Train stations and airports are among my favourite places in the world, and I can spend a fair amount on a concourse just watching the world go by. Transit maps make me excited. I read Alain de Botton's A Week at the Airport in one go.

In the end, I think it's because places of travel are stimulating. At an airport or train station, you're either going somewhere new (exciting!) or coming home (also exciting!). You see people of all kinds, different fashions, human interactions -- it's easy to find something to look at or listen to. It's humanity in a small space, and I just love everything about it. If I can't travel far, I can always get similar feelings by being in a metro station.

Now, Ottawa is a small city, and I know it won't feel the same as exploring the Tube. But seeing these stations go up still elicits the same type of excitement I get from being in other places of travel.

What's your reason?

Still no Confederation Line updates on the site this week, bu they did email the update, as they did last week.

Week of April 29, 2019

The Rideau Transit Group’s primary focus remains on testing and commissioning activities and operational running of the vehicles along the alignment. Please feel free to reach out via email at [email protected] if you have questions about the project.

Activities Across the Alignment – Construction Update

Occupancy permits have been issued for all stations except for Rideau Station. Rideau Station is undergoing final touch-ups such as painting, signage installation, and installation of tactile warning strip indicators for the visually impaired. Final elevator commissioning is underway. Final clean-up is also underway.

Train Testing

Thales has issued the final safety certificates for all 34 trains, and testing activities are continuing.
  • OC Transpo’s Electric Rail Operator training is progressing well.
  • Operational running of the trains continues.
  • Crews continue to simulate service conditions, including running trains on a schedule.
  • Testing of coupled trains on the alignment is ongoing.
  • Commissioning of the communications systems at the Transit Operation Control Centre (TOCC) is ongoing.
  • OC Transpo is now practicing launching trains into service, similar to the operations that will occur in revenue service.
  • System integration tests (SIT) for the Traction Power Substations (TPSS) are underway.
  • Crews are calibrating and tuning the Guideway Intrusion Detection System (GIDs) scanners.

Upcoming Construction Activities

In the coming weeks, the following activities are scheduled to occur:
  • Ongoing vehicle testing and operational running
  • Safety Auditor sign-off – review of submitted Engineering Safety Assurance documents
  • Installation of public art at Tremblay Station

Nothing's more frustrating than standing in the rain waiting for a bus as another LRT train flies by empty.
