As for the Osborne Loblaws, not sure where that one went.
I don’t remember the Loblaws myself but I vaguely remember the old Food Barn on McPhillips.

Incidentally Northgate has undergone major changes now 3 or 4 times and the Royal Bank is the only business to remain in the same place for what 40 years now?

What's the problem with them being unionized?

If a majority of employees in a workplace decide that they want to become unionized, why shouldn't they?

The Food Barn on McPhillips became a Safeway and is now under renovation for FreshCo. The Lobalws which became Supervalu is the square building behind Domo in what people think is all Northgate but it is really two separate properties. Best guess it remained an active grocery store until the mid-late 80s then moved to the current Superstore site. The move occurred after Red River Co-Op exited the grocery and hardware business.

Edit: Moved the union discussion to Western Espresso

And most people who are pro-union would say that. Very ease "conversation over" fallacy.

Except I have negative experiences dealing with unions, and know several hard working people who felt restricted by their own union.

There is a reason that employers trend away from unions, and it's not due to evil alone.

If you're doing Joe or Jane Desktop work, with no real certification required (other than your uncle works there!), you are making WAAAY more than you would outside the union environment.
Some of my friends at Hydro argue they're overpaid. Their contribution relative to what's expected at the private sector, combined with better benefits, pensions and everything in between, makes it very appealling to stay at hydro.

They all feel slightly bored and underutilized, but know that they're taking a dip in pay to go private. It may only be temporary, but does not come with the many security blankets Hydro provides.

What's the point of unionizing?

Employers don't respond well to a show of force, because they have much more to lose than a job when the ship goes under. When Iran buys weapons, people notice...

Obviously there are reasonable examples for unionization but it's not what it used to be.

Not really a surprise. When Outlet Collection first became public I speculated that the different retail areas further south on Kennaston would take a significant hit as companies looked to exit leases. Adidas would be one of those.

I wonder if the Smart Centre area will be redeveloped once it empties out (which seems to be happening quickly)?

The north part of Smart Centre will definitely need redevelopment of some sort. best guess would be to demo a sizable chunk of it and get a grocery store (Save On Foods, Coop, Amazon, Seafood City, etc) to move in.

Can that area handle another? There are already 3 + Costco right on that corner...

Amazon (Whole Foods) and Seafood City are both more niche/specialized grocery stores than the general purpose Safeway/Sobeys and the limited scope Costco (try buying fresh herbs there for example).

They have horses on either side of the entrance. Seems odd. It's a Chinese place? Or a western BBQ? Or are the horses served on the plate?

No, there's a couple in the Greater Montreal area.

My one experience was in Florida and it was reasonably good, though yes, I did think prices tended to the high side. It's not Chinese cuisine, it's a fusion menu that is inspired by multiple Asian cuisines.

Yea I've been to it in Seattle, I would say it was like Manchu Wok, a typical food court fare, served on fancier plates in dim lighting.

I just looked on google, there was a Toronto location but it has shut down, didn't work there I guess.

Never been to PF Changs but Pei Wei is fairly reasonable. I would compare it a little to Mongo's Grill/Patal Express. Difference is you pick what is in your stir fry off the wall. From memory you pick a combo of veggies and pre-selected sauces, then separately pick your protein and your starch. They also have a selection of appetizers you can pick from. Pricing at Pei Wei is fairly reasonable especially if you are trying to find a something that is a not-meat based meal that is cooked for you.

PF Chang's is a full service restaurant and it's market placement is towards the higher end. Think of it as a Keg for Asian-inspired (from Indian to Malay to Chinese to Mongolian) fusion cuisine. I remember in Florida each of the meat containing main entrees was priced in the $15 to $20 range (USD of course) whereas at most Chinese or Vietnamese restaurants here, mains usually run at bit over $10 to slightly more.

Having been once, will I visit the one here? Maybe if I'm dining with a larger group of people, because with a group of say six or more there's inevitably one person who's a real fusspot and insists on the familiarity of a chain restaurant, as they can't eat this and can't eat that and can't eat hardly anything at all, and PF Changs menu is amenable for them. If it's just me and one other person or a small group, no. Too many other options.

^ Nice refresh. We could stand to see a lot more of that kind of thing on our many tired looking commercial blocks.
