IIRC Harry Potter was redesigned and is going back before the city for zoning approval.
Yeah, there are several highrise proposals going on here. This is a combined rendering showing all the current plans, except the "Harry Potter" lightning bolt design is being re-done after Related bought the site.

The tower currently under site prep (I believe) is the black tower in the foreground. Or possibly the red brick and glass tower on the left, which looks oddly similar to the new Wicker Park Collection tower...

correct that's the one, the black foreground tower I misjudged it while driving past.

Yes, it's the black building in the foreground. Remember, odd numbered addresses are on the south side of E-W streets (and east side of N-S streets). The other buildings are on the north side, so they'd be even numbered addresses - and thus not this one as the address of the building being torn down is 1125 W Van Buren.

633 W North is looking great. I wish I still lived along the Brown Line so I could watch it rise every morning. There's something deeply satisfying watching a strip mall bite the dust and be replaced by a big, urban development like this this, especially one that doesn't have a huge podium.

717 S Clark - load testing.

March 25 26 and 27

Setting up and executing the load test - eventually 160 piles up to 110' deep, down to hardpan.

Often times the construction is way cooler than the final product, it seems

It is. And its got a ways to go. When people in the neighborhood complained about the height and scale they were universally lampooned as NIMBYs on these and other boards but in this case I think they were correct. Once the near north high school land gets redeveloped I cant wait to see what the park / open space behind this building is turned into. I heard practice fields for Lincoln Park High but not sure if thats still on the table.

Static load testing
[this is to the best of my knowledge, corrections clarifications, and suggestions appreciated.]
[If you have questions about UNIX I can answer those authoritatively ]

There are 2 columns of 4 piles each - with a pair of big red beams across the top, this is the "static" part.

The pile in the middle, the test subject, has a 1000 ton hydraulic jack on the top which pushes against the big read beam, pushing (loading) the test pile and driving it further into the ground.

Measure how far it is pushed with the specified load.

Static load testing. IIRC it tests the axial compression on the piles by pushing down on the pile (driven to design specs) the jack is placed on top of. I would imagine they also look at the uplift on the other 8 piles but I think mainly the compression/capacity of the center pile is the main interest.

To confirm the design specs to see if they need to make any changes

Sorry for the delay. I'm in the middle of the process process of making a clean version of my model so that it runs better so currently half of the buildings are missing. But here's shots of the BKL proposal. Surprisingly it doesn't stand out too much from a lot of angles.
