I don't think Burnham would care that much. Have you actually looked at his sketches of the City? The private buildings are built out much more like Haussmann's Paris. His "make no small plans" wasn't really meant to apply to individual private buildings, but to how the buildings interacted together and created a city. Giant skyscrapers don't always add positively to the pedestrian experience. For all the good things about the Sears Tower, as it was implemented really didn't do positive things for the streetscape. And neither did the Standard Oil (Aon Building). Hancock was a bit better, but still not a great interaction with the surrounding blocks.

Here's Burnham's suggestion for Wolf Point, for example (from UofC's Burnham Plan sub-site):

Personally, I'd take Haussmann's "boringly repetitive" Paris over the extremely diverse Dubai streetscape any day of the week.

Anybody been by the 22 story tower that got its foundation permits in january at Ashland and Roosevelt yet?

The only project in this area is Guggenheim Partners' tower at Ashland/Taylor. It does not have any permits yet, a news article reports that they only applied for the permit in December.

Red crane for Old Town Square(I believe). I can also see the crane for that one north side strip mall redevelopment... can't recall name)

The plan was always for that lot to become a (public) elementary school, but Magellan isn't willing to pay for it and the city doesn't see a need to invest here versus other growing areas like West and South Loop.

Instead Magellan courted GEMS to open up in their development to provide a (very expensive) school option. It's obviously not a public school, but it does take a lot of the wind out of the sails for those arguing for a public school.

Magellan would happily accept a public school, I think, if the city paid them fair market value for the land and assumed all expenses for constructing the school. Otherwise, it's a little parcel too small for a highrise, the best they could do is a small boutique condo building.

I'll use this thread to propose this thinking that everyone checks the Highrise page:
I know we all have lives outside of this forum (hopefully) but we should plan a set time to grab beers and discuss the goings-on for all things Chicago Development, life, and etc.. I propose either something informal or we coordinate something through the mods or trusted members (i.e. harry or nick) where we use email/venmo for rsvp and reserve an open bar for a couple of hours.

Just my two cents.

Too small for a high rise? I'm definitely not a expert on this page...just a admirer of architecture. But that lot seems large enough based on the size of the other highrises next to it ...and the one on a very small lot, it seems. Fill me in on what size lot is needed to build a "highrise", and what size lot this is, if you know.

Site Prep underway at the harry potter tower site on van buren. saw excavators tearing down some old brick buildings and digging a little today.

They're currently tearing down the car wash at 1125 W. Van Buren for a different project. That might be what you saw?
IIRC Harry Potter was redesigned and is going back before the city for zoning approval.
