The +15 system works in Calgary because they set aside the 2nd floor for retail from the get-go. Regina's has nothing there. If they want to put a concerted effort into adding some vibrancy and life onto that level across the downtown, then perhaps. Otherwise, you'd be better off focusing on the street level businesses and doing something like putting the entirety of the FW Hill section of Scarth under glass from the Cornwall doors to Vic Park.

Skywalks are terrible. We need to focus on vibrant, compact, well designed streetscapes. Cold weather cities can be active and vibrant year round with proper design and focus. I wonder how many Regina officials attended the Winter Cities Shakeup Conference in January? This is where you learn this stuff, or just talk to urban planners/engineers who understand how accounting for wind and leveraging sunshine can make all the difference between being comfortable walking outside in a downtown vs the atrocious wind tunnels we currently have.

Dedicated bike lanes would be fantastic. 4 years ago I had decided I was going to start biking to work, lol... I made it about 1/4 of the way to work on the first day, before I packed it in. You gotta have nerves of steel to handle riding a bicycle on Regina streets in busy traffic.

Do we see the beginnings of the Railyard project in the next couple months? The project secured over $33 million in funding in November with the intention of minor work 2019. Assuming they will just do basic servicing and work on Dewdney this year with the bridge and further development in 2020?

The pedestrian bridge from downtown? I assume that part won't happen for at least 10 years. Actually I assume that this whole project will move at a snail's pace because of the economic situation.

My spouse rode her bike to work (only 2 km away) and was hit by a car a few weeks in and hasn't rode since as she is too scared. It was at a 3-way stop and a car ignored her/ wasn't paying attention and turned right into her (she had the right of way).

Drivers in this city hate cyclists and act dangerously around them. I had a bike pull up to me at Broad/College and the vehicle behind them, instead of waiting, drove around them through the intersection in the turning lane, endangering everyone simply because they were too impatient to wait the 15 seconds it would take the cyclist to accelerate through the intersection. At the same time, people get mad if cyclists use the sidewalks in busy areas. It's no wonder people don't ride bikes.

I feel that pedestrian bridge is one of the first things they need to do.

I assume they'll need to actually build some stuff in the old railyards first and see how it goes before they think of building the bridge.

The optimism around here by some is nice but it doesn't really seem rooted in reality. I really think the project will be moving very slowly.

Cautiously optimistic it will happen soon, but not optimistic about its timeline within the project. I can't seem to find any specifics on the development of the railyards atm, but when it was first being discussed I remember the bridge being one of the first improvements. I'm not sure if that has changed but it doesn't make any logical sense to do any development before there is a pedestrian connection to the neighbourhood.

I biked to work in Regina year round the last couple of years I was there. I found that the trails worked the best but would use side streets when required.
Maybe I’m more adaptable but I’ve never had a problem figuring out a safe route to bike to work in any city I’ve lived in.

Depends on how you want to look at it.

If you want to be pessimistic and assume no serious development will be done on the site for 10-20 years, then obviously it doesn't make sense.

But if you follow the news, see the recent funding, and quotes from the Mayor and other individuals surrounding the project, you would be lead to believe some sort of development will happen within 5 years at most. I certainly don't think it is unreasonable to construct a bridge at that point.

I suppose the bridge isn't the most urgent matter, but it would be foolish to wait until the entire area is developed to put in a pedestrian connection. Good luck getting any interest in anything commercial/residential in the railyards without a connection.

If there were units for sale and I could cross from the railyards over to Sask, I'd consider moving there. But with the only connections being at Broad or Albert currently it isn't very accessible.

My problem is that there is not a relatively safe way to get from the east end to downtown. I may be overly cautious compared to other cyclists, but I do NOT trust the drivers in this city one bit. So I end up using our marvelous paths to zip around on the weekends!

I am doing some research into the Alvin Hamilton Building in Regina, and am wondering if anyone could direct to me to photos of the interior space when it used to be the Galleria Shops. I remember it being all glass and mirrors when I frequented the space as a kid, but I can't remember if that is accurate or not haha. If anyone has any photos, please post them or let me know where I can find them!

I was just in the Alvin Hamilton building the other day and it's funny how apparent that the escalator system is missing. There's a staircase, the glass elevator, and then nothing but railings around the western side of the floors. I'm actually surprised that there isn't still at least one food vendor operating on the main floor of the building anymore, given the amount of workers in that building and the pre-existing food court tables/seating.

It'd be pretty seasonal, I imagine. That building gets lots of foot traffic in the winter due to people doing indoor laps, basically; but in the summer is a lot quieter.
