Good point. HRM could easily afford to service debt financing of that magnitude if they simply made some reasonable cuts in other areas. Things like the boondoggle integrated mobility plan, the hugely bloated and dysfunctional city bureaucracy, the gold-plated pension plan - the opportunities are endless. I think the problem some have is what we have seen during this year's budget process, in that Council has not only shown no appetite whatsoever for restraint, but in fact has an insatiable thirst to spend even more on all sorts of unnecessary things, which will lead to a significant property tax increase not only this year but will also light the fuse on a taxation bomb that will go off in a few years time when growth slows and with it, HRM's existing gravy train of increasing revenues.

Most responsible organizations would simply make a decision yes or no and then figure out how to pay for it. In the case of HRM Council they typically do not have the "no" option on their agenda.

Does that mean an additional $130 million from reserves & taxes, or taxes ?
Do you expect council to approve such an expenditure in 2020 ?

Did anyone make it to any of the games on Wanderers Grounds when there were games? I am excited about going to a game this summer, it is one of the perfect spots imo for a stadium.

Ownership group has committed approximately $60M. They say they will come out with an update around the end of March.

Alex J Walling is out of touch and always was. I wouldn't exactly put him near the top of the list when it comes to reportage. He must be long since retired.

Colin how about sharing some of this prized journalism.

I don't think elly lives in Halifax (nor do I). Perhaps you could provide a brief synopsis.

Alex makes the case that the quality of the imports is not what it was. He mentions Joe Namath and other well known NFL players who first played in the CFL. He claims American players have other options. Long article, well assembled argument. I bought my copy yesterday.
Read an article recently that pointed out Brady only makes $400,000 a year at bteh Patriots and does so to help the team acquire other talented players to keep the Patriots winning the Super Bowl and help him break records.
This is not the article but has the same view : https://www.businessinsider.com/tom-brady-contract-discounts-patriots-bargain-2018-7

Thanks

Tom Brady only takes $400k/year? Wow. Of course, he's already made his money, and makes more in endorsements, but still, this speaks to his character as a team player if true.........

No stadium for Halifax because those CFL players can never be as good as what Alex J. Walling experienced in the glory days 40-50 years ago!

Several statements above are very wrong. Joe Namath never set foot in the CFL. Tom Brady, while he has a contract that is team-friendly, still makes about $15 mil annually in salary from the Patriots.

They probably meant Joe Theismann and that was only nearly 50 years ago. Yup, league hasn't changed much since then, no new stadiums, athletes aren't as big or fast, no TV money compared to them good ol' days.

Colin, you might want to stick to your "I don't want a football stadium and I'll obfuscate the issue" schtick instead of venturing into this realm.

Point of interest, I knew a guy who tried out for the Als and he played with the infamous King Corcoran "The poor man's Joe Namath"

While I'm at it, the same guy tried out for the Ottawa Rough Riders at OL and met fellow OL Bob McKeown of Fifth Estate/NBC/CBS fame. He said both Corcoran and McKeown were good guys.

Tom Brady only taking 400k isn't exactly something to celebrate, either. It undermines the NFLPA by devaluing player salaries, and it's a practice that contributes to the lack of parity in the NFL and NBA.

According to Google, as of 2016 there were 774 colleges and universities in the U.S. that had football programs to feed 32 NFL teams and 9 CFL teams (which also have USports and Major Junior football providing talent). Compare that to all of the options for soccer players trying to go pro which MLS has to compete with. Compare that to the talent pool available for the 32 NHL teams. NHL teams also lose some talent to European pro leagues.
Just because CFL players are not paid millions doesn't mean that the league doesn't feature talented athletes. Watch one of the plays of the month episodes on TSN or Sportsnet during the CFL season and see CFL players making great plays.

And yet we still seek to find an answer on WTF this has to do with building a stadium in Halifax.

Wow... so much reading but no *actual* information about the stadium.

At least there is lots of "enthusiasm" for it...

Why be negative, exactly what does that accomplish?. Tough to be proud of a town that has a "can't do" image, especially when a sleepy town two and a half hours away figured out how to build a new stadium and arena without the irrational town going bankrupt narrative. Cue irrelevant data from usual suspect.

My negativity is aimed at all the useless bickering without actually saying anything.

I hope to accomplish the encouragement of positive conversation and the presentation of actual facts and information... though the tone of your comment makes me believe this may not be possible...
